What's your creepiest album cover?

Satanisreal_lEarlier this week, Nick DiFonzo, author of Seriously Bad Album Covers, compiled 28 Creepy Album Covers for the Houston Press. The Louvin Brothers’ Satan Is Real is my favorite of his choices, mostly because the guys seem to have no idea Satan shares the stage with them. (Or is real.) I honestly didn’t recognize most of his covers, so I’ve taken a complete inventory of my own iTunes library, and share some of my creepiest album covers after the jump. Feel free to add your own!

1. Bang Gang, Something Wrong — You think?!
2. ELO, Secret Messages — WHAT IS GOING ON?
3. King Crimson, In the Court of the Crimson King — Aggghhhhh. Nostrils.
4. The Moody Blues, In Search of the Lost Chord — Weirdest chill-out locale for vague Jesus figure ever?
5. The Presets, Apocalypso — Wait a minute. Now I just miss Six Feet Under.
6. The Cars, The Cars — Blasphemy, I know. But that mouth terrified me as a child.

I was always most creeped out by the cover of Black Sabbath’s debut album. That old hag gave me the willies.

    - U2’s War – that kid looks like something out of “Village of the Damned”! And how DID he hurt his bottom lip??
    – MICHAEL JACKSON’s Bad – plastic surgery gone wrong!
    – HALL & OATES self-titled album – Daryl Hall wearing make-up! Uugh!
    – Early IRON MAIDEN album covers – creepy, that is, until you get used to them.
    – CULTURE CLUB albums – do I really need to explain?
    – BLIND FAITH’s album – ugly naked girl!
    – GENESIS LIVE – look closely at Peter Gabriel on stage. What the hell is that costume??
    – KISS’s Dressed to Kill – there’s just something about the combination of the make-up and the suits that just doesn’t sit right.

For me, hands down Dan Fogleberg, The Innocent Age…my mom had this and I was terrified of it when I was little – the creepy doll on the gravestone? SHudDeR, lol

Sonia Dada’s A Day at the Beach CD. I feel sorry for the guy – it looks like he was alive when thrown overboard.

As a kid, I was terrified by Bowie’s Diamond Dogs. Still looks kinda creep, now that I’ve dug it up again.

Like Cracker, it’s a Black Sabbath album, but not the debut. Check-out 1983’s one-off with Ian Gillan on vocals, Born Again. A baby with devil horns and fangs is one thing, but the kid-like art was inexcusable.

Definitely Magical Mystery Tour by the Beatles. Especially the bunny. *shudder* I can’t really place my finger on why, though.

Since some of these seem to have come out during the 60’s, I have to think: Do my parents have any of these records and will they show up on Mad Men?

    1. John Entwistle – Smash your head against the wall (front and back sides)
    2. Cheech & Chong – Double Wedding (the bride with the bag on her head freaked me out)
There’s also a Frank Zappa with bandaged and blinded soldiers from WWI
Need I mentioned all these creepy album covers came out in the 70’s?
Apparently it was a great time for freaky album covers

There is an old Rainbow album, with Richie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio, called Right Between the Eyes, and it features an album cover of a guitar coming right out of a guy’s skull while his eyes bulge.

Oops, here’s the link for The Mezzanine. (WARNING: If you don’t like bugs, it’s a bad idea to follow this link) http://images.coveralia.com/audio/m/Massive_Attack-Mezzanine-Frontal.jpg
