PlayStation 3: No price drop this holiday season

Categories: Tech, Videogames, Web/Tech

Playstation3_01Some bad news for all you gamers out there who were hoping that Sony would soon drop the price on its $399.99 PlayStation 3 game console: an official for the slumping electronics giant stated that there are no price cuts planned this year. "We have a business to run, and we have to make sure we’re doing the right thing for the shareholders as well," said the managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment’s UK division. Okay, I know Sony is still losing money on each PS3 they sell (such losses are always expected early in a console’s life cycle) — but I’d be worried about losing even more market share to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii. Especially as they have some pretty terrific titles PS3-exclusive titles like LittleBigPlanet and Metal Gear Solid 4 and the upcoming Resistance 2. What say you, dear readers: Was anybody out there planning on buying a PS3 this year? And how will this news affect your potential purchase?

I was time Black Friday to get this as a Xmas gift for my brother. I guess he’ll have to be satisfied with new kicks.

  • Winona

I would only consider a PS3 for the Blu-Ray capabilities so that I could have a player and still have my DVD home-theater-in-a-box system (oh yeah, and perhaps have the opportunity to play Guitar Hero).

  • paige

    long live nintendo!

  • Stef

My house is not allowed to purchase one until they are under $200. it was the same with the Xbox 360. We did, however, get the Wii at $250.

Anyone who doesn’t think $399 for a PS3 is nuts. This machine is a monster. It has one of the best blu ray players available (even beating out the stand alone Sonys), and oh guess what…..it also plays video games.
$399 is a STEAL, an absolute steal and you are honestly ripping off Sony for even buying it at this price. It costs well over 400 dollars for Sony to make one of these. Where else do you get that kind of deal? I’d love to buy a car that costs LESS than it does to make it.

  • Carli

We won’t be getting one until we decide it’s time for a Blu-Ray player. Until then, we’ll stick to the cheaper Wii.

  • Jorge

I was going to wait until Black Friday to buy a PS3, but I guess I can just buy one whenever know. So long to $400.

  • Lina

We own the PS3 and it’s by far the best Blue Ray player and game player. You’d be nuts to buy anything else.

Ian– I couldn’t agree more. The PS3 isn’t just a video game console. It’s a fantastic Blu-ray player, it’s a web browser, picture and video viewer, music player, etc., etc. A multimedia hub for $399? You’d be crazy not to buy it.

My husband and I were planning to buy a PS3 this year because of the new Prince of Persia game. LOVE that series. $400 is a little hefty though…it’s more than we spent on each other combined last year.

I like Nintendo Wii’s Blu-Ray player, it looks great on my HDTV. How can you beat a system for $250 that is a gaming console and Blu-Ray player?

  • todd

    wii doesn’t have a blu-ray player, braniac

  • Michael Martinello

Mine does. I was able to watch a Blu-Ray movie yesterday. The Wii picture quality is 10 times better than the PS3.

I also ask my stuffed animals advice and haven’t showered since they put the chip in my head.

  • j

    ps3 blows.

  • TMB

I want one, but will play our Wii and PS2 until they drop the price

  • Raven_Moon

I wan’t one, but I’m not paying that much for it.

Sure, they have an obligation to the shareholders. I can understand that. Business is business. What they’ll fail to realize is that the Wii and XBox 360 will still outsell them this holiday season. The reason? Cost. I jumped on any deal I could for an XBox 360 once they announced their drop in price last month. I suspect a lot of people did that. The Wii will continue to be sold out nearly everywhere. Microsoft and Nintendo understand that they’d rather sell units and make SOME money rather than come up with shortages, stores constantly unable to meet demands of customers, and prices that keep burning holes in the pockets of consumers, many of whom are scaling back their major-item purchases due to the slumping economy. It makes no sense from Sony, which used to be pretty consumer-savvy (the success of the PS2 is prime example). Also, I don’t think Blu-Ray demand is up as much as people think.

i’ve got all 3 consoles and i find myself playing the ps3 more than any of them, there’s really no reason to drop the prices ESP. because of their solid solo titles that have just come out (LBP and MGS4) every console that has a killer exclusive can do what they want, that’s what made the ps2 such a success, not it’s price, because don’t forget those were wicked expensive when they first came out….

  • Wayne

I had 350 put aside, but i’m not paying full price this far along, i wait till tech gets a bit cheaper

  • Jon Hughes

I already bought a PS3 in March for it’s Blu-Ray compatibility, and have no desire to get an X-Box 360. Maybe a Wii for Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart, but not a priority.
Spare us any doomsaying about the PS3, Sony is in this for the long haul and I predict that despite being the most expensive and latest to market of the consoles, the PS3 is gonna win this console war in the end. All the advantages are there: better games, Blu-Ray player, and consumer loyalty, among many others.
The PS2 was the biggest selling console of all-time as well.

  • Jon Hughes

Wii does NOT come with a Blu-Ray, for god’s sake – a Blu-Ray would not even fit in Wii!

  • Chuck

The games on the PS3 -vs- the Playstation 3…. Look, the PS3 will be AMAZING… in about 3 years.
There is no reason to buy a PS3. It is overpriced, with VERY few exclusive games (Heavenly Sword anyone?) and now it has NO backwards compability.
Get a 360, a Wii, or go read a good book. The PS3 is nothing but a paper weight, a very expensive one.

Actually I always had Nintendo, until the hokey novelty of the Wii. My PS3 is my first Sony (haha) and I love it. Blu-Ray was a major deciding factor. The fact that PSN is free as XBOXLive is not. The fact that I can get a 20GB version and upgrade the HDD to a 320GB myself. The fact that my 40GB version is on my network wirelessly and with my PSP I can play any PSone games loaded to my PS3 thru my PSP with remote play and that can be done at home directly off of PS3->PSP connection or over a wifi hotspot with the PSP dialing into the PS3. There is just sooo much more the PS3 does. The only thing I cant do with it is play Gears of War2 grrrrr…its ok. I can just play it at my bro’s house ;)

I HAVE A 360 AND IM GOING TO BUY A PS3 WHEN IS GOING TO GET A LITLE-BIT CHEAPER, DONT FORGET THIS “IS ABOUT TO PLAY GOOD TITLES”AND NOT TO BE FANATIC OF ANY SISTEM.

I’ve patiently been waiting for a price drop in regards to the PS3, but it doesn’t look like it’s coming. So after the long wait since it’s introduction to the marketplace, I’m finally crossing in over and purchasing an xbox 360. Sony has lost a lifelong PlayStation devotee. Good riddance Sony!

  • Daniel Sargent

I also have been waiting for PS3 to lower its price for the game console. So I am going to make the jump to Xbox 360 as well this year. It pains me but they are more affordable.

  • Ashley

I did buy a PS3 for my boyfriend for Christmas. He has wanted one so badly. I just made sure I got it for the $399.99 price, but it included a free game and a remote. I want to buy myself one after Christmas to watch blu-ray dvds. Hopefully the price drops soon.
