Alan Rickman already mentally prepared to play Hookah-Smoking Caterpillar

Alanrickman_lIs it just me, or did Alan Rickman’s promo pic for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves strongly foreshadow his upcoming role as the hookah-smoking caterpillar in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland? Probably just me. Rickman’s the latest star to sign on for what’s shaping up to be the weirdest movie ever. (If anything could be weirder than the 1985 network-TV Alice adaptation starring everyone in Hollywood, that is. Remember Carol Channing as the White Queen? Nightmares! Great ones!)

Johnny Depp will be The Mad Hatter, as we know. Also on board: In Treatment‘s Mia Wasikowska as Alice, Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen, Anne Hathaway as The White Queen, and Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts. Christopher Lee will be involved as something (The White Knight, maybe?), and Danny Elfman will do the music. The movie doesn’t come out until 2010, by the way. I just remember a lot of P-Dubs loving Alan Rickman back when Missy Schwartz enviably ate dinner with him during Sundance. So there you go! Puff puff.

This is one movie I am seriously looking forward to. Rickman, Burton, Depp, Hathaway, Carter…this movie is going to tip the surreal scale and it’s going to be phenominal.

I LOVED that tv adaptation! I recently bought it on DVD, and it’s just as wacky-amazing as I remember. Jam tomorrow, jam yesterday, but never ever jam today! Of course, I was four when it came out, and I didn’t want to watch it because it preempted “Scarecrow and Mrs. King.” Nothing gets between me and Bruce Boxleitner…

I cannot imagine a better catepillar! I collect Alan Rickman movies…and I am happy to hear he has signed on!

So is it true that this version takes place when Alice is 19 and is not the traditional Alice story we’re used to?

I always love new Rickman news! This movie sounds too surreal for words–I’m gonna love it.

I have LOVED him since Truly Madly Deeply….**sigh**

I cannot imagine any more perfect casting. Might actually be worth seeing now.

Alan Rickman as the caterpillar is the definition of perfect casting.

I’m most excited about Crispin’s involvement. Yes, I’ll admit it. I don’t know him from his groundbreaking and intellectually stimulating films. Creepy Thin Man. I can’t wait to see Creepy Thin Man be the Knave.

This made my day! Alan Rickman and Johnny Depp were great in Sweeney Todd so it’s exciting to see them together with Burton again. Too bad we have to wait a few years for this…

I also remember the tv adaptation back in the mid-80’s. I never could watch those scenes with the Jabberwocky cuz they terrified me! However, casting Rickman as the Caterpillar is a great choice! Though, Sammy Davis Jr. was really good….”You are old Father William, the young man said and your hair has become very white!” lol…

I recently bought the 80’s TV version on DVD, but I still have the original broadcast taped from the TV on an old VHS. It’s so old and barely works but I love watching it on there, mostly because those 80’s commericals were awesome! I always loved the young John Stamos. Boom Diddy Aw Dumb, Boom Diddy Aw Dumb!

Alan Rickman…sigh. I’ve seen him in many movies, but for whatever reason, true Rickman love didn’t kick in for me until I saw him as Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility. It’s hard to watch Harry Potter movies and hate Snape when you’re swooning over him. LOL
Anyway, I can’t wait for this movie. Except I’m going to have to.
