“I wish you hadn’t done that, Hildy…divorce me. Makes a fellow lose all faith in himself…Almost gives him a feeling he wasn’t wanted." —Walter Burns (Cary Grant), His Girl Friday (Watch the entire opening scene after the jump, or just check out the quote in question at the 4:50 mark)

Thanks – a little Cary Grant goes a long way. (Swoon…)
People… SEE THIS MOVIE. It’s amazing. One of the best ever, and the fastest talking you’ll ever see. This is Cary Grant at his best, and Rosalind Russell matches him (and then some) word-for-word. Thanks for posting this… it’s reminding me to go dig out my copy and watch it again.
You used to be able to pitch better than that.
What’s this? Another classic black and white film acknowledged here??? I think one or two people on the EW staff may be in danger of developing a brain!
A little Cary Grant to start my day? What could be better? Another good quote: “Walter, you’re wonderful, in a loathsome sort of way.” also from that opening sequence. This is BY FAR one of my fav movies ever!
Can we have a “Philadelphia Story” quote next?!?!?!?!?!?
I actually have two copies of this movie, because one just isn’t enough!
How could anyone not love Cary Grant? He is my all-time favorite Movie Star. There will never be another like him. Hopefully new generations will discover his wonderful talent.
Favorite Cary Grant Movie: The Philadelphia Story with Jimmy Stewart and Katherine Hepburn. What’s yours?
I love His Girl Friday! Now I want to stay home from school and watch it.
KateDFW, I gotta go with BRINGING UP BABY all the way! Although one of my favorite lines from him actually comes from NORTH BY NORTHWEST:
“Look, I’ve got two ex-wives, a mother, a secretary and several bartenders who depend on me. And I don’t intend to disappoint them by getting myself slightly killed.”
” it would have worked out if you had been satisfied with being reporter and editor but you had to go and marry me, ruin everything.” lol. I love this movie. Fast talking, smart writing and strong female role. Very unusual for that time. It still holds resonance.
