Something is not right with these Must List picks

Categories: Must List

I can’t stop listening to Cold War Kids’ newish mini-blast "Something Is Not Right With Me" (see video above), especially ever since it appeared over the closing credits of a recent episode of Entourage. It’s one of many icy little gems on the band’s new Loyalty to Loyalty. How about you, PopWatchers? What are your current pop culture Musts? List up to three items on your Must List from current TV/movies/music/books/games/online. Don’t forget your e-mail address, in case we decide to use your submission in the magazine. Deadline is Thursday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m.

Music: Lady Antebellum. Just saw them in concert and they were incredible. Hard to believe that they’ve only been together for two years and are creating some of the best new country music out there. The industry seems to agree with the fans — they’re up for Best New Artist and Best Group at the CMAs next month. Plus the entire trio is easy on the eyes!

Dead Space–It’s Resident Evil x 10 in this game of supremely scary sci-fi survival horror

Live From Daryl’s House – Daryl Hall hosts young artists at his various houses, where they jam on the Hall & Oates songbook and the up-and-comer’s hits. The love flows both ways with Chromeo, KT Tunstall, and Eric Hutchinson – plus home renovation tips from Daryl! livefromdarylshouse.com

Music: Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ video. I’m 100% on Team Slezak with this one; B dances circles (literally) around her competition in this bare-bones video. Few others could flail about in a stark white room wearing nothing but stilettos, a Flashdance-esque leotard, and a terminator arm piece and totally pull it off. Girlfriend OWNS IT.
TV: Project Runway finale! Leanne created a stunning collection, Korto put up a heck of a fight, and the Spawn of Satan got sent back to her tugboat after being called out for plagiarism for the second time. Please let there be a sixth season!
Books: Eminem’s memoir, which I like to term the “Eminemoir.” Based on the excerpts I’ve read, his writing talent is clearly exclusive to rap lyrics and not full-length books. But finally understanding what was going on in that hot head of his during the 2002 VMAs is enough to merit a solid perusal.

Now, that it has opened a few days ago I cannot await to see Oliver Stone’s “W.” Given the promises of a great performance by Brolin, that Stone already made a fascinating movie about an US president (and many more movies about American politics and wars) and that “dubb-ya” is one of the most controversial political characters this country has ever seen, this movie must be something extraordinary. And, even if it is not, a biopic about a man who used the world as some kind of playground directed by a man who is the enfant terrible of American movie making, is definately worth a look.

“Of All The Things.” This documentary about singer-songwriter Dennis Lambert is a funny behind-the scenes concert film, a bittersweet look at what might have been, a chance to grab at the brass ring one last time, and a sweet, knowing love letter from a son to his father, who built his city on rock and roll.

I’m loving Fall Out Boy’s new single, “What a Catch, Donnie”. It’s so beautiful and showcases Patrick’s vocals very well.
Also I’m loving that Zac Efron is getting so much attention right now. I may hate the High School Musical franchise but I definately don’t mind all the attention he’s getting because he is just so much fun to look at!!

I’m loving the new Jonas Brother’s music video for Lovebug with a 1940’s look.

  • Daniel

    – Family Guy Vol. 6 on DVD
    – Yvonne Strahovski on “Chuck”
    – “Whatever You Want”, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic

  • Jess

John Green’s new YA book, Paper Towns – smart, funny and very effecting.
And how can Pushing Daisies not be at the top of the list?

  • D.

    1. Jenny Lewis’ new album “Acid Tounge.” I don’t just love it, I lurve it.
2.”Pushing Daisies.” Pie is the new cake in my world – and the introduction of Pigby is awesome.
    3. Shirley Manson on Terminator: Sarah Conner Chronicles. I get to see Shirley Manson on Network tv EVERY week. ‘Nuff said. Now all I need is for her solo album and another Garbage album to be released and I’ll be happy.

  • NineDaves

Privileged on The CW. Sure, those other kids at 90210 and Gossip Girl may be getting all the attention, but Privileged is the real star of The CW’s teen-centered schedule.

  • J Duncan

I can’t stop listening to Loyalty to Loyalty. I won’t admit to the number of times I’ve played it since it’s release because it’s embarrassing (and I lost count a long time ago). The urgency, intimacy and sincerity in the songs demand to fill some unnamed void in your life; a void you might not have known was there. It’s music that isn’t afraid to be boldly passionate made by musicians who seek that which is authentic. (Oh, Lord help me! I love this album!) My life is better for having listened to it dozens upon dozens of times. Best tracks: “Mexican Dogs”, “Golden Gate Jumper” and “Every Man I Fall For”.

Strange that VH1’s newest reality show has the most entertainment potential of any new show this season.
“Scream Queens” takes 10 wannabe actresses, sets them up in a house, and picks them off one-by-one, earning the winner a part in Saw 6. Now, that’s not much of a prize but with judges like John Homa, Shawnee Smith, and (best of all) James Gunn, it’s the most fun show to hit my tv all season. Sure, there is a surplus of rotten ‘talent’, but a few girls stood out in the premiere episode-I’m rooting for Tanedra (who claims to have no prior acting experience) and Sarah!
You can peep the first episode here: http://www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/scream_queens/series.jhtml

Big props to NBC for bringing back Life and giving us My Own Worst Enemy. Now all they need to do is bring back Journeyman.

  • Simon

Music: BBC radio 1, Friday starting at 2pm Eastern. 12 hours of dance music and great DJs. Best way to count down to the start of the weekend!

  • Raven_Moon

    1. “Family Guy”: “Road to Germany” was hilarious!
    2. “Life”: I love this show! People should start watching it.
    3. “Pushing Daisies”: (see above comment)

  • Cyberghandi

    1. Novastar – Mars Needs Woman

    2. Little Britain US
    3. Nitin Sawhney’s new record ‘London Undersound’ (feat. Paul McCartney, Imogen Heap, Tina Grace, Anoushka Shankar e.a…)

  • Liz Goldberg

Two “Russian” guys respond to Sarah Palin’s claim that she can see Russia from her house:

I can’t stop watching it, it’s so funny.
