'Dexter' to make a killing (get it?) for at least two more seasons

Dexter_lSharpen your knives and rev up your powersaws, PopWatchers: Showtime announced yesterday that it has renewed its murderous thriller Dexter for a fourth and fifth season! The news comes as little surprise given its success: Since debuting in 2006, Dexter has been one of Showtime’s highest-rated series ever; this year, the show earned an Emmy nod for Outstanding Drama Series and star Michael C. Hall nabbed a nom for Best Actor; it won a prestigious Peabody Award earlier this year; and EW just gave the current season a whopping B+.

I recently avowed to my co-workers that it’s one of the best shows on TV, and I wholeheartedly stand by that statement. Given my penchant for shows that tend to skew on the girly side (see: The Hills and Privileged as examples), it might seem surprising that I’m so passionate about a show that follows a serial killer, but the seamless writing and captivating actors make it easy to see past the blood and gore and fall under the show’s emotional and psychological spell.

And…let’s be honest, Hall is not so hard to look at (see, there’s that girly side I was telling you about).

Are you guys as happy as I am to hear that Dexter won’t be deleted off your TiVo season passes anytime soon? And are there any females out there like me who also love this show but don’t think they should? Speak up below!

GREAT news.. Dexter is an amazing show with one of the most captivating leads on television in Hall and an outstanding supporting cast..
very rare in the field of literary adaptions in that I’d fully argue its superior to the books it was based on (season 1 matches pretty well to season 1, but season 2 is way different and by the third book, the author has made things too supernatural. the show has expanded on background characters like rita and laguerta who are very minor in th books..
tell your friends! Dexter is here for the long haul

I am a female and I absolutely love this show!! Started watching it on DVD a month ago and got caught up just in time for the new season, so I am thrilled it will be here for at least 2 more. Great writing, great acting from Michael C. Hall, great supporting cast. And since they film a lot of scenes down the street from my house in Long Beach, I look forward to maybe semi-stalking around to see what will happen in the upcoming seasons!

Everyone who knows me is shocked that I hail it as one of my faves. I’m a 27 year old female, and look forward to it all week long! I am so thrilled that I won’t have to mourn its loss for at LEAST two more years. (Still pi$$sed about you axing “Huff”, Showtime.) My other favorite shows include “Gilmore Girls”, so… you can see why my love for “Dexter” sounds so weird. But it’s intoxicating and addictive.

My sister and I and some of my female co-workers have been watching Dexter since it debuted. Don’t see why women wouldn’t like this show. Granted, Hall looks great, but the stories and twists are what make Dexter amazing!

I don’t understand why women wouldn’t like this show either. I’m a woman and I love it. Though I have to catch up on the seasons when they come out on DVD since I don’t get Showtime. In fact it’s another woman who got me hooked on the show–she insisted that I had to watch it, so I did since she’s not one to ever recommend something so very highly. Actually, the only people I know who do watch Dexter religiously are women. No men whatsoever.

Thanks to CBS for airing season 1 (despite some dumb editing) and cruising through season 2 on DVD, I’ve been able to follow the show in time for season 3.
Sadly, as much as I enjoyed the first season and adored the second one, I can’t help but feel somewhat unimpressed with the recent episodes. Maybe it’s because last season really up’d the ante on tension, this season seems tranquil. Maybe it’s because I really enjoyed watching Dexter re-evaluate his life as a killer, on top of spiraling out of control with the crazy scenarios thrown at him, as opposed to dealing with Rita’s pregnancy. I’m far from giving up on Dexter and find him more intriguing than any serial killer on the overrated Criminal Minds, though season two really spoiled me.

HEY I am a Woman and i love i mean LOVE DEXTER!!!! what a great show!! After my brother kept braging about the show i rented season 1 in time to get hooked and catch season two!!!! i love this show it IS the best thing on tv. and please when you write a review on great show never EVER metion the joke of a show called “the hills” wat a waste of film and time and people wonder why the world is the way it is!!! MOre shows like dexter and please leave those dumb whores of the hills out of the tube.

My husband and I love Dexter. This season hasn’t been as great, but it’s still better than most of what’s on TV, so we’re sticking with it. I’m glad it’s being renewed, even if that means I can’t dump the expensive cable after all. My only complaint is this — I love the foul language as much as anyone, but I hate the “C” word and would like to see that one left out. I seriously don’t know anyone who uses it, and it was said twice in one episode a couple weeks ago. Kinda ugly.

I dont see what being female has to do with enjoying a show…I enjoy studying serial killers, so this show is a real pleasure for me. As far as blood and gore goes, there really isnt much. Its not really hard to stomach. But I am glad to hear it was renewed. I loveeeeee Michael C Hall.

  • juju

I love Dexter too. Michael C. Hall is the reason. I loved this guy & his acting ability from the moment I saw him on Six Feet Under. BTW, I am far outside the demographic for women with crushes on gorgeous actors. I am a grandma!!!!

I am female, and I love this show – but I have no feelings that I shouldn’t. Other than feeling squeemish about murder as entertainment. However, this is the BEST murder as entertainment show EVER. People look at me weird when I say that Dexter is all about morality and ethics, but it IS. And incredibly, they have managed to push it even further this season. Also I commend them for NOT subtitling the spanish. People get so riled up about making English the only lanquage in America – they are pissy when store signs, etc., are subtitled. Well, here’s a dose of your own medicine! Want to know what Maria and Angel are talking about? Then learn Spanish, lazy!

  • Rita

Why no TV Watch for Dexter EW????

  • DayC

I LOVE DEXTER!! Great stories and great characters. And I agree with Rita, EW should have TV Watch for Dexter.

  • Nick

One of the best shows on Television. HANDS DOWN. Showtime is really pulling through with some quality entertainment.
