Three reasons Robert Pattinson should host 'SNL'

Twilight_lHere at PopWatch, we’re staunch supporters of thoughful debate, citizen activism, rocking the vote, and all such democratic ideals. So when we heard that Twilight fans have organized a petition to nominate their patron vampire saint Edward Cullen (also known as actor Robert Pattinson) for a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, we felt it was our duty to bring this matter to the people. And since the best voter is a well-informed voter, we’ve put together the top three reasons why Pattinson should appear on the sketch show stage:

1. It would be good for the economy
: In these lean times, everyone’s looking to save a buck or two — even big networks like NBC — and in Rob you get not only a host, but a musical guest to boot. And after my exclusive preview of the Twilight soundtrack, which includes Pattinson’s song "Never Think," I can whole-heartedly endorse the vamp’s vocal prowess.

2. The inevitable Twilight parody: Pregnant Amy Poehler (as Bella Swan) + Rob = Breaking Dawn fabulousity. I wonder if Amy can vomit blood on cue?

3. He’s just plain fun to look at

So, PopWatchers, are you going to add your John Hancock to the Rob-on-SNL petition? If he does land the gig, got any sketch suggestions?

You have my vote, as many times as you need!

  • Erin

This could be the funniest thing ever. He’s one of the most awkward celebrities (just watch any of his interviews) and chose a hilariously awkward nickname for himself (meet Spunk Ransom everyone!). Plus, there’s a chance to mock Harry Potter and Twilight at the same time. I definitely vote for this to happen.

  • Gillian

He’d just be his usual high self and mess up off the prompter. Who wants to see that?

  • Joanne

Has anyone thought that he might NOT WANT to do it. I love the cheek of fans who harrass actors like this. He’s an actor not a dancing poodle.

  • carolyn

I’d rather Rob didnt do it because he’s not relaxed as himself. But I’d love him to take the p out of Breaking dawn on screen. Meyer would have a fit.

  • ali

I dont want Rob anywhere near SNL. He’ll screw up and it wont help his career. He’s a wonderful actor but as himself he’s very awkward. Americans love mouthy people who can talk for hours about nothing. Thats not Rob.

  • Bruno

Are you kidding? He is like a bag of cats. It’s really what makes him so endearing I think.

  • M

    I vote YES!

  • Joanna

Rob DONT DO IT. Dont bow to pressure. Its not your forte at all. I dont want a bad performance on this show to unpick all his wonderful acting. Rob’s a wonderful comic actor but if he has to just read unfunny liness off an autocue it will be a disaster. He freezes as himself.

  • sch

No way. Rob would need a lot of media training before he could go on a show like that and not be terified. He’s terified just meeting fans and can hardly string two words together.

  • Elizabeth

I just did a laughing spit take after I read the Breaking Dawn parody idea…

  • brenda

I’m a huge twilight fan but a campaign to get Rob on SNL? Are you guys serious?! One word: overexposure. Let the dude be man. He’s going to have a hard enough time as is escaping fangirls from now until never.

  • amused

I thought the fans were bad enough pestering for Rob to do this and now I see that EW are just as bad. Leave the poor guy alone.

  • T&T

I agree leave the poor guy alone. I;d rather he focus on getting new fabulous roles in films than SNL rubbish.

  • Deb

I would like to see RP on SNL but I, too, am a little cautious about the quality of the skits and how he and the Twilight series would be represented. SNL can be really cheesy and unfunny sometimes. Of course, I remember the days of Chevy Chase and John Belushi so recent SNL is often a disappointment anyway. Yes, I’m old. Probably the oldest Twilight fan out there.

  • helen

Rob needs to concentrate 100% on building a top film career. He isnt a lightweight entertainer. He’s a serious actor who just happens to be brilliant at comedy to (see the film How To Be to see Rob excel in comedy). Let SNL come knocking on his door when he’s the top hollywood superstar but not before.

  • TW

HE WOULD BE PERFECT !!! AND THE RATINGS WILL PROBABLY GO UP !!!

  • Tania

Amy I’d rather you give us more information on Rob’s track than write an article on this silly suggestion. Rob’s fans ae so stupid at times. Now is not the time for Rob to do a stunt show like this. His agent should be focusing on helping him get some killer roles. The roles will show the world what a formidable comedy and dramatic actor he is. SNL isnt very good any more. Terrible skit writers.

This clip shows how wonderful he is

but I would much rather he showed the world how good he is at comedy and sensitive drama through films and not being a celebrity on a poor quality comedy show.

  • Andrea

Rob’s way to good to appear on this desperate show. Watching him deliver unfunny lines would be toe curling. At least when he picks film roles he picks well. He’d have no choice with SNL but to deliver their awful and unfunny lines. It would be the kiss of death for him. I agree dont do it Rob.

  • Di

This is not a match made in heaven. Rob delivers wonderful characters in films e.g Art in How to Be and Salvador Dali in Little Ashes but thats compeltley different from standing there and delivering naff lines on an autocue. I never find SNL funny. They’ve got away with murder because of Tina Fey looking like Sarah Palin and I can see why that got high ratings but its usual weekly lineup and sketches are rubbish. Most viewers wont have a clue who Rob is. When he’s the top movie star (which he will be one day) then fine but its too soon.

  • willow

    ROB ON SNL?
    YES, PLEASE!

  • sandy

Any REAL Rob fan would understand the risk of this and want to shield him from the suggestion. Its good to see that the people commenting on here are real fans and want to nip this stupid suggestion as soon as possible. Its very rude of so called fans to do a petitionwhen Rob has never given the slightest indication that he would want to do it. Talk abotu pushy fans. This really shows that Rob’s life is going to be hell from now on. Hell even the media are a nose round his neck.

  • Kelly

Here’s another reason: Rob is simply funny. Anyone who has taken the time to watch his other work knows how funny he is, both in his delivery and physical presence. And he has a good enough sense of humor to be able to laugh at himself so he could do a sketch playing himself as 12 year olds freak out about his chest hair, try to cop a feel of his bronze locks, and get him to “dazzle” them.

  • Katie

All of the people who saying SNL would ruin his career are stupid. You think your putting smart comments and if your so supportive of him his career wouldn’t be over idiots. I don’t know about hosting the entire show, but maybe a musical guest and one or two skits. Actors go on that show to promote their next movies so I don’t see how it would hurt, only help. Odds are it won’t happen with the election so close, thats what SNL is focusing on anyway.

  • Shelly

This is why I dont like Rob’s fansites and question their judgement because they virtually all supported this petition and advertised it. Are they insane. Rob is such a shy, nervous awkward person in real life. He’s uncomfortable talking as himself as any fans should know by now. He cant even go on stage to sing in a small venue without being drunk so if fans want him to be a laughing stock then pestering him via this petition is the way to go.
Fans should know the sort of guy he is by now and want to protect him not set him up for a fall.

  • vbnm

I agree with all of the reasons you pointed out, I think the ‘Breaking Dawn’ one would be hilarious. But seriously, why are people coercing this guy to do a show to which he most likely is reluctant to participate in. If he decides to do it one day, he will. I understand right now is probably the best time to put him on the show since so many people are so eager to find any piece of news about him, and undoubtedly will push the ratings, but can’t we just leave things be? I am horrified by the idea of him doing this because (as Joanna said) he bows to pressure.

  • Ker

Rob’s a brilliant comedy actor but I completely agree this garbage show is not for him. His fans are completely misguided. Unless he;s acting 100% in it he’d die as his real persona is very shy. I agree it seems he has to be drunk to sing as the video footage at gigs show and would be a complete wreck singing on SNL.
If fans want to help Rob and support his career go see his films and do pr on Little Ashes and How To Be.

  • Ruth

If Rob fans want to do something useful they should focus on getting pr for his two new films Little Ashes and How To Be and not a stupid second rate sketch show.
EW should be writing about Rob’s role as Salvador Dali and getting an interview with him about that.Thats what true fans are really interested in. What a waste of an EW article on Rob. Here we are crying out for real info on Rob and Little Ashes and we get this nonsense.
