Last night on The Mentalist (a show that to my surprise has earned "series recording" status on my DVR) two scenes totally freaked me out, but for very different reasons.
Scene 1: Simon Baker’s Patrick Jane plops down on the beach wearing a very jaunty, expensive-looking, three-piece suit. Okay, admittedly, I’m a fussy type who doesn’t even like getting sand between my toes, but come on, WHO WOULD DO THAT? (Dude goes on to roll up his pant legs and build a sandcastle!)
Scene 2: The crotchety construction site manager refuses to believe the police when they explain his employee’s nose is sticking out of a slab of concrete, so he reaches down, presses it, then recoils when the decomposing human flesh lets out a little squelch. (Brace yourselves: I’ve embedded a clip of said horror after the jump.)
Call me crazy, but I actually found the sullied couture to be approximately 11 percent more unsettling than the squeaking snout. Place your vote for the episode’s most squirm-inducing moment in the comments section below!

I see your squelchy nose/sandy suit moment and raise you the moment in Final Destination 3 (which my son was watching last weekend) where the 2 girls are trapped in the tanning beds. Couldn’t bear to look at screen and yelled for my son to turn tv off!
I totally agree with the nose part – I, too, would probably had to have touched it to believe it was real, but then I am sure I would have recoiled in disgust afterward. But my favorite part of the episode was when Flipper called Patrick Jane by the nickname ‘Trick during the chess scene – it’s a cool moniker for the character, especially considering his skills (and I may borrow it myself).
Loving Simon Baker. I too, panicked mildly when he lay in the sand in his suit. It was actually hard for me to watch.
Not only did he lie on the sand in his suit, he used his shoe as a shovel. *shudder*
As for Final Destination, my husband was watching it, too, and I had to go in the other room. I saw the tanning beds and knew that nothing good could come of them.
The scene that made me squirm: Dead girl’s dad, in the corridor, getting an update on the investigation. He sees Flipper being escorted from the interrogation room, and gets angry and threatening. This scene was so jarringly off-key and gratuitous (why was dad in the corridor instead of at somebody’s desk? and why did he think he had to behave like similar characters he’d seen on other television shows?) that it made me question whether this show is really worth my time.
There was decomposing flesh in that clip? All I noticed were some perfectly-tailored Simon Baker pants! I’m both loving it and am JEALOUS.
ew
Love the show and yep, squiremed a bit at him playing in the sand in his suit! And yeah, when I realized it was a nose…ew!!!!!
I have only been lucky enough to see the pilot of The Mentalist and I loved it. I only wish that it came on earlier as my bedtime if 9:00. Why can I not see the shows online as I have heard that you can do this…at least I would be able to see the shows I’ve missed. Any suggestions as to where I can access my missed shows?
Thanks,
S.Faria
You’re actually upset at his ruining his clothes? Good grief… If you’ve watched the show at all, you realize that the clothes are left over from his life BEFORE losing his family. Now, he’s just about enjoying life and it’s little moments. Clothes can be cleaned or bought new, you can’t get life’s moments back though.
