Henson's 'Happytime' reminds us of Angel's 'Smile Time'

Anyone else get a flashback to the season 5 Angel episode "Smile Time" (clip below) when you read about Happytime Murders, "the film noir puppet comedy aimed at adults" that the Jim Henson Co. is developing?

According to Variety, "The pic will be populated by a mix of human characters and puppets in the Henson style of irreverence and parody. Story centers on a puppet detective forced to solve a string of murders around the Happytime Gang, the cast of a popular children’s show."

I miss Puppet Angel. Luckily, "Smile Time" repeats on TNT Oct. 24, at 7 a.m. ET. (You’re welcome.)

All I think of is Fred finding out Angel was a puppet, and going, “Oh, and the little hands!” in the most adorable voice.
And THAT is why Angel Season 5 rocked. Not the only reason, but a freakin’ good one (along with Spike, the repeat cookie speech and Cordelia’s finale).

“You’re a wee little puppet man!”
I love Puppet Angel; I bought season 5 on DVD mostly for him.

Sounds like “Puppets Who Kill” on the Comedy Channel in Canada. Demented, depraved, delightful.

Smile Time is one of the best episodes of tv, ever. You have Spike and Angel duking it out over “you’re a wee little puppet man”. You have Angel declaring that he doesn’t have puppet cancer. You have Puppet Angel morphing into Puppet Vampire Angel. You have puppets using perverse language. You have the trademark walk down the hall with Puppet Angel.
(Spoilers for those who haven’t seen season 5)
You have Wesley and Fred FINALLY getting their act together. You have Gunn setting up the Fred dying and becoming Illyria thing. Joss, why must you do that to me? (Joss, I still love you even though you can’t stand happiness.)

So I totally love Angel but this episode freaked me out. I think it might be cuz I’m afraid of puppets … though I’ve never thought about it before. Argh, all I know is puppet Angel makes me twitchy.

Smile Time is quite possibly my favorite episode of any TV show ever. Pure genius. Man, do I miss that show.

Haha, I love this conversation between the evil puppets:
Groofus: Yeah! So tomorrow’s gonna be a pretty big show, huh?
    Polo: The biggest.
Groofus: Cool. ‘Cause I’ve been workin’ on this great new song about the difference between analogy and metaphor?
(Polo throws his coffee mug at Groofus, hitting him in the head)
    Man!
Polo: Are you out of your mind?!
Groofus: Well, we want it to be good, don’t we?
    Polo: We eat babies’ lives!
Groofus: And uphold a certain standard of quality edu-tainment.

    man…that show was awesome

Thanks for the giggle! I love Puppet Angel-”I do no have puppet cancer!” Pure genuis, once again, from Joss Whedon:)
And, yes, this “Happytime” thing sounds more than a little homage-y (that’s nicer than blatant rip-off).

First thing I thought of in reference to Happytime Murders, was it all sounded a little “Avenue Q:SVU”.
If it’s even as half as entertaining as Smile Time (ooh, how I love the off-screen elevator fight..and that Spike comes off second-best!), it could well worth a few hours of my time.

“Wee little puppet man” tops my list of things that make me laugh hysterically while inappropriately perusing PopWatch at work. Damn you Mandi Bierly and your engaging PopWatch Blogs.
Sidebar: Am I the only one who thinks that the law office set on Eli Stone looks an awful lot like the law office set on Angel? Or do all TV law offices look the same?

  • Jeff

I noticed the sims between Eli Stone and Angle law offices as well.

  • Michelle

*sigh* I miss Angel. Such a great show. I actually have a Puppet Angel and a Puppet Spike. Now I can reenact the elevator fight on equal terms! ;-) And “I do not have puppet cancer!” is one of the funniest lines EVER!

In checking out the show “Sid the Science Kid” also made by Jim Henson Co., I noticed that a lot of the people who work on the digital puppetry did do Smile Time. So there may in fact be cross over there.

  • Nick

    Smile Time was perfection.
Did you ever finish the series Mandy??
