Help Amy Sedaris create her sitcom

Categories: Deals, Television

Amysedaris_lAmy Sedaris fans, rejoice: she’s getting a new sitcom. We don’t yet know what it’s called or what it’s about or where on the TV dial it will end up, but she’ll create, write, and star in the show, with assists from Paul Dinello (her writing/directing partner on Strangers With Candy and Exit 57) and David Letterman (who’ll produce, as he did the Candy movie). The Hollywood Reporter article announcing the deal doesn’t elicit much info from the funny lady as to what the premise of her show will be — only that it’s an idea she came up with six years ago that she now feels it’s the right time to do, that she’ll be ad libbing occasionally, and that she’s shopping the show to networks but hopes it will end up on cable. Does that mean that the idea is something suddenly topical, or that there’ll be Curb Your Enthusiasm-style improv, or that the content is probably too risque for broadcast TV? Well, we can only hope — and speculate. Sedaris also hints that the idea isn’t fully fleshed out yet, so maybe she’s open to your suggestions. Tell us below what you’d like to see happen in a Sedaris sitcom.

Cameo by her old friend Stephen Colbert? I love Colbert, but for some reason seeing him Monday through Thursday isn’t enough. Plus, he’s a great comedic actor outside of his Bill-O’Rielly-on-ecstasy Colbert Report persona. Although I love it!

I saw her on the Letterman show last night she is so over the top. I love her humor. Another she needs another show like strangers with candy to work to her strengths.

  • Katie

I’d like for her rabbit, Dusty, to have a walk-on role in the pilot.

Honestly, I don’t really care about the concept because no matter what it is with Amy Sedaris it will be hilarious! I LOVE when she’s on Letterman – their chemisty and appreciation of each other’s humor is so fun to watch.

I couldn’t come up with the idea of Strangers With Candy if I had a million years. She doesn’t need my help. Glad to hear she’s working on a sitcom. I used to love sitcoms–these days, not so much. She’s incredible, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

I’d like to see her do a Roseanne Barr kind of dsitcom, with real people’s problems and trials, but sharp, snappy humor and sarcasm.

    excellent- i can’t wait!

    YES!

Miss Amy should play a small town politician who is thrust into the national spotlight and at the same time, her husband just announced he wants a sex change. This would be
    HIL-larious!

  • Jerri Blank

Best news EVER! Don’t care what it’s about, just as long as it’s just as funny as Strangers, if not funnier.

  • Lyndy

I’d watch her just have a weekly conversation with Letterman.

    DEAR AMY:
    1) Please include a recipe in every show. No sitcom has done that! And ever since I made Barbara Eden’s chocolate-chip cookies from TV Guide, I have wanted them to!
    2) Please make sure your character injures or disfigures herself every ratings sweeps period. Because that would be funny.
    3) Must be set in either New York City, or a podunk town in upstate New York (a la Newhart)
    4) You must play more than 1 character.
    5) Either set in the early 70s, or you just dress that way (the photos in “I Like You” = sexy trend-setting sitcom)
    5) Martha Stewart as your boss or landlady.
    6) Animated Opening Credits with a song that explains the show.

A quirky doctor/lawyer/journalist/generic career who just can figure out men/her parents/husband/crazy friends. I’ve seen what this woman can do to the after school special, lets see what she can do with mundane tv aimed at women.

  • Tammi L

Play multiple roles, and have cameos by some of your other characters. we would love to see Jerri of course, but I know Piglet could find a good home on cable.

  • Annie

Amy is best when she is being herself. Film her in her neighborhood and in her apartment. Have themed shows and recipes. Have road trips to visit David in France and eat Char-Grill burgers in Raleigh. Explain the Greek Orthodox Church, WTF, with the eye over the alter business. Personally, I don’t think the rabbits are that interesting.

  • Tonic

I think she should be a quirky serial killer who kills serial killers that kill serial killers.

  • Bob

She could play a wild schizophrenic locked up in a mental institution. She can be friends with some other crazy people, give the nurses trouble and be a pain in the ass to the doctors. And instead of hanging out with her friends in a coffee shop, they meet in the common room to talk about their lives (both real and imaginary)

  • Tess

How about a sitcom take on the Real Housewives of (?). It could be so over the top with obnoxious superficial women flagrantly spending money on themselves. There could be a good wife; a bad wife; a sociopath wife; a stupid wife; and a single exwife having an affair with the stupid wife’s husband also add a lesbian wife and a gay manwife (neither of these two could ever be the stupid wife).

  • Stephanie T.

A Public Librarian in an Urban area. I assure you that role has sitcom written all over it, and Amy would be perfect.

  • melissa

It should be about entertaining, like the book. She could entertain a different person (not real, but a character) or a group of people each week, include recipes, etc.

  • Coyote

As long as the ghost of Ricky, her imaginary boyfriend, is on the show, I smell Emmy!

  • Kilmer

Maybe when “Kath & Kim” tanks, Amy could bring John Michael Higgins on her show to reprise his role as David Letterman (from the movie “The Late Show).

  • ElectAPromQueen? (maybe not)

Cool. I like Amy. She should based her sitcom on Temps and the temp industry. Recruiters at NYC based temp agencies are so slimy and cutthroat that it’s due time for a comedic insight and spoof of this shady industry. Amy can pull it off by playing a career temp who never gets a break or play a ruthless plastic commission freak temp recruiter at a staffing agency. Perhaps take a note from Mad Men, and create a premise based on an inside look at staffing agencies. With her writing skills, it can turn out to be hilarious.

How about a sitcom called Billable Hours.A comedy set in a law firm. Amy and Her Partner Christopher MacDonald will take ANY CASE. Their team of lawyers would all be slimy some hot some not. Cases from the headlines Fat from Fast Food Sue them! Flight attendant argues with a famouse Minsters wife on plane now she can’t work because of incurable hemorroids. Worker sues other worker for staring at her every day and she can’t work because of PANIC ATTACKS/ANXIETY SUE EM! You could have Chris Elliott, Sean Young as a gorgeous crazy lawyer. BILLABLE HOURS. YOU BRING US A CASE WILL SUE THEM AND GET A CASE OF $$$$$$

Anything Amy does is wonderful. Just include Jerri Blank on the show, maybe not as the main character, but as a supporting one. I miss her :(
Strangers with Candy is still my favorite show of all time!

I would hope she has a segment that would allow us faithful viewers to call in with questions a la “The Believer.”
She changed my life by responding to my plaintive question “….why isn’t anyone worried about me?”
    See complete answer:
    Dear Amy,
Why isn’t anyone worried about me?
    An Inquiring Mom
    Readfield, Maine
    P. S.: I asked this question of my daughter just minutes ago, and she suggested your column as a place to air my concerns about myself.
    Dear Mom,
This is a tough one. I wish I could say that nobody is worried about you because you are so well grounded and capable, but we both know deep in our hearts that that is a lie. It’s pretty clear that you are a train on the verge of derailment. …….. I suppose a better question to consider than “Why isn’t anyone worried about me?” might be “How can I exact a horrible revenge on my thoughtless offspring?” There’s a question I can sink my fangs into.
    Amy

    PS Dear Amy Sedaris,
Would I sound too needy if I begged to be a guest on the show? If I begged to be a regular? If I begged to have a seat in the back row in the audience?

She should do a sitcom based on her book “I Like You”, where she plays a well-known party planner/etiquette expert in Atlanta with a local TV show. Her public persona is a well-mannered lady in control of her life, but her home life is totally different. She’s got an Oscar Madison type husband who’s a stay at home dad to their young son. Amy wishes her son was more like her, but he’s a total boy, getting dirty and playing video games. Amy’s business partner is a man who people think is her husband (he should be played by that guy who was J Peterman on Seinfeld) but he’s really gay and a total narcissist; his boyfriend looks just like him, and one of the running jokes is that neither of them see the resemblance. Each episode will also feature Amy cooking one recipe and teaching the audience how to make it. And, like her book, it should be called “I Like You”.

  • Sharen

For quite some time, I’ve been thinking about doing a sit-com in a hotel that starts with and includes the characters who run the hotel. Episodes would include the many different guest (from anywhere) who come for private getaways, weddings, reunions and in some way become participants with the main characters that we come to love/loath (Amy along with weekly regulars). So far, all I have are a few (rough) short stories/plays that could serve as a jumping off point.
