It’s been a while since our last major storm — not counting the economic tempest that may ruin us all. Not to be a party-pooper, but we still have seven more weeks in this year’s hurricane season (which officially ends on Nov. 30). Stormpulse is a good place to track major storms forming in the Atlantic, using a mix of satellite imagery and forecast models and real-time data from a variety of sources, including the National Hurricane Center. Chances are we’ll see a few more named systems in 2008: they’ll take the names Nana, Omar, and Paloma. Still, I think we’re all hoping the season ended with Tropical Storm Marco, which made landfall near Vera Cruz, Mexico on October 6.

Umm no, it really hasn’t been that long since our last big storm. Hurricane Ike was less than a month ago and pretty much decimated parts of the Texas coast. It’s funny how little media attention it has gotten given that the body count is in the double digits and there are billions of dollars worth of damage.
Yes, Sarah, I was just thinking that. Hurricane Ike came right through where I live. Thankfully, I personally had no damage, but some of my family members had significant flooding. I don’t know why it didn’t get as much attention as Katrina, considering the fact that it affected so many people. I discovered the Stormpulse site while tracking Ike. I hope I don’t have as much anxiety over a storm for 25 years. That’s how long it’s been since a major storm hit the Houston/Galveston area, although with much less impact than Ike.
Nana and Omar are named storms already.
Omar! That storm’s an Ay-rab! It’s not a good old American storm! We got to get Omar and Nana and all them other hooligans out of our airspace!
