'SNL Weekend Update Thursday': Well!?!

Oh my God are you serious!?! You missed Weekend Update Thursday on NBC? REALLY?! No worries. Watch the funniest Seth & Amy part (below), or the full episode (on Hulu). And don’t miss McCain’s adorable new pet name for Obama on EW.com’s daily Sound Bites!

I like this. Take away the "Will this week’s celebrity host be a total disaster?" fear and it turns out SNL fits right in as a 22-minute sitcom. All the next two Thursday installments need is some Tina Fey guest spot action, to tide us over until we can finally belt out, "Please welcome…Liz LEH-MONNNNNN," Oprah-style, when 30 Rock premieres October 30.

Armisen only vaguely looks and sounds like Obama, but he had his speech pattern down.
However, my friends, Hammond was pretty perfect as McCain. Loved watching him wander in front of the camera.

I thought it was wonderful! Plus, I’m glad to find that I can watch SNL without fighting sleep!

After a random sampling of people I know who watched this (plus this EW post), I think I must be the only person who didn’t love the Thursday night version of SNL Weekend Update.
I can’t articulate exactly except to say that the show felt “flat” to me and actually seems to work better within the 90-minute format on Saturday nights.

Some of the things were funny, and some were complete duds, like the financial analyst. Talking in a funny (as in not usual) way does not in itself make for a funny (as in ha ha) sketch.

  • Babs

I don’t usually watch SNL, so I agree it works better at 22 minutes than 90. But I pretty much enjoyed only the debate spoof.

  • Vicky

Throughout that whole debate sketch I was like “When is McCain going to walk in front of the camera…when is it gonna happen!!” I burst out laughing at that moment.
PS – I agree with you about the financial analyst. Not very funny or clever. I also sometimes think they need to give Kenan Thompson the boot. He’s only funny like 1/3 of the time.

I was looking forward to it…even switched channels at the right time to find it! Fred Armisten’s Obama is a pretty good impression but just not very funny (and I do love Fred). Hammond’s McCain works a bit better but then McCain’s pretty funny right now. Best part was seeing Bill Murray show up as the Cubs fan. Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers have turned into a good WU team. I did laugh at the “Really? Seriously?” segment.
Looking forward to the next couple weeks.

i thought it was fine i just wish seth and amy had done more political jokes. wouldn’t it have been hysterical if one had referred to the other as “that one”.

  • Nancy

OMG! Are you serious?! Love, love, loved it. That’s been our mantra in the office all day. Really!

  • megan

i will be so sad when amy poehler leaves to do the office spinoff. she and seth make almost as good a pair as she and tina did. “oh my god, are you serious?” was the funniest thing i’ve seen in a while.

  • donna

This is a has-been show not worth the time it takes to hit the remote button to another channel

  • Cat

I laughed out loud many times during this show, and left wanting more. Can’t remember the name of who was playing Tom Brokaw last night, and I know they booted him a couple of years ago, but he’s always been great, why not just bring him back and boot the two newbies who aren’t very good!

  • thetruth

I couldn’t believe how many commercials they took just to give the Weekend Update duo a “break.” I don’t think it was 22 minutes- probably 17. Opener was funny but they didn’t capture McSame getting creepily close to the audience member asking the questions. More skits would help vs. just the anchor desk. Amy’s great. They should’ve done credits for the cast- maybe a shortened version of what they do for the Sat. shows

  • Carolina

I liked the debate bit, but was disappointed almost the whole rest of the show was the Weekend Update, much of which fell flat for me. I thought the whole point of the Thursday shows this month was more political skits and jokes. Let’s sharpen up the political satire and make some things happen!

  • Sean

I think they needed a starting and ending skit otherwise the news segment was funny except for the Keenan part.

  • Normalman

Debate wasn’t bad. The fake news wasn’t nearly as good as John Stewart’s. Let’s face it, except for Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin, SNL just isn’t that good.

  • Dennis N.

It was an appropriately concise supplement to the regular series. While Colbert and Stewart definitely refined the mock-news niche, Seth and Amy’s rapport (especially Amy’s random thug-speak when discussing Armadillos) is endearing. My question is this: what’s gonna be this week’s opening sketch on good ol’ regularly-scheduled SNL? I hope they don’t stretch the poli-schtick too thin.

It was funny, had some good moments, but will definitely benefit by an appearance by Tina Fey. I loved Hammond’s McCain wandering the stage, and Parnell’s Brokaw is great – hopefully Parnell shows up on 30 Rock again this season – Dr. Spaceman, Dr. Spaceman!
I think they need to find a better Obama impersonator – I do like Fred, but I think they could do better looks-wise. And hopefully they’ll be needing someone for the next 4 years.

  • Raven_Moon

I enjoyed Seth & Amy’s “Really?!?” bit, but overall I thought this SNL installment was a little lame.

  • ElectAPromQueen? (maybe not)

Am I the only one that likes Fred as Obama? He pulls it off. I don’t know, SNL Updates on Thursdays is it a bit overkill, but NBC needs the ratings boost for their Thursday block.

  • Shirley

Yes, Kenan needs the boot. Where’s Maya Rudolph? Anyhow, for an African American presence, Lorne needs to replace Kenan with a hilarious comedian and impersonator on the rise named Affion Crockett. He has a you tube channel/subscription, if you guys want to check out his comedy reel and impersonations. He can probably do Obama as well.

  • BrandonK

I liked it…I don’t think they need to FIX IT! FIX! IT! FIXIT!

  • aa

i liked it. i hope that seth and amy do the couple that should be divorced before she leaves. have to agree that kenan has gotten terrible. actually he’s been awful for a while but how much i used to enjoy kenan & kel has blinded me all this time. plus andy sanberg’s input was kept to a minimum… i could learn to love the abridged snl.

  • Stephanie T.

It was funny, it had it’s moments. However, Hall and Oates?! What the…?! Well at least it was a better impersonation than the lost SNL year with Anthony Michael Hall and Robert Downey Jr. during Pee Wee Hermans Christmas Special skit. That one was soooo bad!

  • emily

    i <3 seth meyers!!!
(and amy poehler and tina fey) =]

  • shrug

That Obama is woeful. Since when does he have a New York accent? And if the clip above was the funniest part of the show, I’m glad I missed it. EW hit it on the head in this week’s issue — take Tina Fey out of the equation and the show is lousy. The only cast member with talent outside of the departing Amy Poehler is Kristin Wiig.

  • Noah

1)”You keep saying fix it, but how?” “Fix it!” “Fix what?” “It!! It needs to be fixed! Now!!!”……I must be overwhelmingly in the minority, but I thought the Keenen’s spot, as Oscar Rogers, was very funny! I found myself rewinding that segment over and over again….But, I will admit that I would not be disappointed if they let Kenan go and bring on a much more versatile, and funnier African-American comedian, especially to play President Obama.
    2) Out of all of the impersonators I thought that the best of the 3 was the Brokaw impression!! He had the voice, the head movement, the pauses. That impression was awesome.
    3) I wouldn’t mind seeing SNL expand and have the best of both worlds. Keep the 90 minute show on Saturday, and keep a 30 minute show on any weekday during prime-time hours. I think everyone will benefit. There is so much happening in politics to just confine it down to a 5-8 minute openning spot. More money, more viewers, more options!!

  • jesuscita

no he was great! I thought he played that very very well. I will remember him for that forever!
