Sarah Silverman's favorite sweet, sad songs (and yours)

Costellosilverman_lSo you think Sarah Silverman’s a caustic comedian who gets her kicks desecrating taboos and offending people, eh? Well, you are right in that case. But she is also a connoisseur of heartbreak folk music, as evidenced by the short but great playlist she’s just put together for venerable SoCal radio station KCRW. Her picks:

She & Him, "Sentimental Heart"
Patty Griffin, "Long Ride Home" (below)
Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins, "Born Secular"
The Mountain Goats, "No Children"
Elvis Costello (pictured), "Good Year for the Roses"

Aww. Those weepers are some keepers. (You can stream all of them, plus Silverman’s narration from the radio broadcast, over at KCRW’s site.) Your turn: What do you think of Silverman’s playlist? And what sincerely sad-eyed tunes would you add to the pile?

I don’t really have another song to add, I just want to say how much I love Sentimental Heart, and anything else that She & Him does.

I love Warm Whispers by Missy Higgins.

Long Ride Home is a beautiful song. Here are 4 that always make me sad:
    Brick – Ben Folds Five
    Goodnight Elisabeth – Counting Crows
Famous Blue Raincoat – Leonard Cohen
I Don’t Like Mondays – Tori Amos cover

    “Phoenix” by Aimee Mann

  • ElectAPromQueen? (maybe not)

What’s a Girl to Do (remake) – Bat for Lashes
When did you stop loving me… – Marvin Gaye
Anyone Who Had a Heart – Dusty Springfield or Dionne Warwick’s version
Dance with my Father – Luther Vandross
I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You) – John Mayer
    Love Story – Andy Williams
Everybody’s Talkin’ – you know that eerie and sad song played throughout Midnight Cowboy. When I hear it, it reminds me of a naive Buck (Jon Voight) walking on Time Square streets, shivering in his denim jacket and alone with no one to rescue him.

I would add River by Joni Mitchell and Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton to that list.

Sad songs are my specialty. I recorded this sad lament recently, thought some of you might enjoy listening. A shameless plug ? Yes but it is relevant to your post in as much as it is also a sad song.
