Are David Letterman and John McCain about to bury the hatchet?

Mccainletterman_lCould John McCain and David Letterman be just about ready to kiss and make up? That’s what the New York Post is reporting (albeit in a thinly sourced article that attributes the news of the purportedly imminent reconciliation only to "knowledgeable sources"). The scenario the Post spins out certainly sounds plausible: McCain would make his long-postponed visit to the Late Show around Oct. 15, when he’s in the neighborhood for the final presidential debate. If it’s true, it sounds like what I predicted here will come to pass. No doubt high-level secret negotiations are taking place even as we speak, with the one thorny diplomatic complication being how to come up with a face-saving way for McCain to apologize to Letterman for lying to him without looking like he’s knuckling under to the liberal media. (Any workable suggestions for how to accomplish this? Submit them below.) Once that wrinkle is ironed out, however, I’m sure the feud will end in a must-watch TV spectacle on the Late Show, after which Dave will go back to bashing everybody else in politics except McCain, at least until the election. So breathe easy, America, for at last, our long national nightmare may soon be over.

Really? McCain’s coming on after this? http://tinyurl.com/452kes

  • Dr. No

McCain is doing everything possible to save face in this campaign.

  • ladyp

present a self-mocking “top ten ways to make it up to letterman”

  • LT

Dave did the same to Oprah and Stevie Nicks for “snubbing” him. I am sure the media as usual blew this out of proportion.

  • Arod

These are the actions of an old, desperate man running out of time and looking for any outlet that will allow him to distract from the issues.

  • toodles

i’m a dem and used to like mccain’s personality. not any more. he is just sad to behold. too bad he’ll fade into obscurity after he loses the election. what a sad way to go out. oh well. let’s get this economy back on track.

  • Suzanne

I don’t want to watch McCain, whom I consider a monster, try to be funny on Dave’s show. Please don’t humanize McCain for the stupid masses, Dave.

  • orville

The self-mocking top ten is a very good idea. He should also come out with a bouquet of flowers (and maybe a box of chocolates) like a repentant date who stood up a girl.

  • gawaine

I like ladyp’s suggestion – a custom top ten list. Either ways to make it up, or the real reasons why he couldn’t be on Letterman. (e.g., Sarah needed help field dressing a moose, he was being stalked by a confused Top Gun fan, etc.)

  • mike

If McCain can suck up to Bush, he can certainly suck up to Dave!

  • eggman

Boo to Dave for giving McCain any air time before the election. If it was sincere regret, McCain would be willing to do it after the election.

If Sen. McCain finally appears on “The Late
Show With David Letterman,” he could always
use the excuse that it was his early phase
of Alzheimer’s that made him forget that he
was supposed to appear on the show instead of doing the Katie Couric interview. Then America will finally see that McCain is not fit to become president. Of course, if he does finally appear, I won’t be watching Letterman that night. Go Obama!

  • AA

So, I thought McCain had skipped his appearance on Dave’s show so he could personally save the economy. How’s that going Senator? All’s well now(!), so it’s time for a few chuckles. This dance will be awesome to watch.

  • Randy

Letterman should bring McCain out, introduce him, cut right to commercial and never interview him.

  • to Suzanne

A monster? Really? Don’t you think that’s taking it a little far? What is Barack Hussein Obama…..a saint?

  • T Gam

He should make McCain dress in drag and sing “Barbara Ann”

  • TAnZI TWO

Letterman is an idiot. He has gone so far off the [left] deep-end… that he no longer registers on the Nielsen ratings.
Voice dictation is awesome. I can say what I want… Then blame the computer.?!.,:;-– – press post comment.

Suzanne, I hope that upon finding out that my middle name is Ann you won’t autmatically assume that gives me some sort of crazy connection with Ann Coulter or some other lunatic out there with whom I share a name…

  • Nix

Maybe he’ll use this appearance to concede. Or, more appropriately, to “suspend indefinitely” his campaign. He’s been trying to get out of this election for the past month, but all his moves to do so backfire.

  • Anonymous

McCain should appear and apologize. The top ten Idea is great. Maybe a top 10 reasons to diss Dave. I know McCain isn’t much to brag about, but he is ever so slightly better than “that one” as McCain would say. Unfortunately Obama will prevail.

  • Anonymous

one more thing- McCain should bring Palin just in case people get bored or don’t bye the excuses.

  • azure

I like Dave, but he needs to get over himself.

  • Daannyy

Well he could do it as if he has already lost the Election and he is only trying to save face at this point. That would be cool.
