Oh no! From the mixed-up files of Mr. Michael X. Ausiello: Andrea Bowen will return to Desperate Housewives as Julie, Susan’s one-note, usually inconsequential daughter who started off the series in an awkward phase and then we realized the awkward phase was going to last her entire life. Julie will tow home a much older boyfriend in the form of Steven Weber — for just one episode. (Hooray!)
This got me thinking: Why do I hate Julie? No apparent reason! Nothing about her is villainous; she’s just…there, and I don’t like it. It’s the same way I felt about Crystal from Roseanne. It’s not like Natalie West couldn’t act. I probably just hated that the character was so pathetic. I remember watching Roseanne and mentally deleting Crystal from the Conners’ kitchen all the time. It wasn’t easy. Thank god we have Photoshop for that kind of thing today.
Quick, name the TV characters you irrationally hate!

For some reason, I really don’t like Sawyer on Lost. I thought for a while it was because I’m a Jater (Jack-Kate fan), but then I realized that I hated Sawyer from the moment he first appeared on screen, before there was even a hint of the Kate-Sawyer romance. So, I don’t really know why I have it in for Sawyer, I just find myself wishing he’d get killed off the show.
Hiro, from Heroes. He is like the male japanese version of Amelie Poulain: so eager to do good that you end up thinking he is a moron with no personality.
Mohinder Suresh. Not sure if it’s the character, the actor, the over-enunciated accent . . . but every time he appears on screen I just think “Shut up, Mohinder.”
Jack Malone from “Without a Trace”. Don’t get me wrong, Anthony LaPaglia is a good actor. But I just can’t watch the show anymore cause Jack annoys the ever lovin… Well, you get the point. I am usually a fan of keeping the original cast intact for a run of a show, but in this case, transfer Malone to the missing persons bureau in Alaska and let Steven Weber, or ANYONE else, stay.
That’s funny, because the only character on Lost I’ve ever really disliked is Jack. I’m coming around, but I still hate him with Kate.
But my answer to the question is Randy on the current season of Survivor. He’s just so mean and condescending and his accent is really starting to wear on me. I know the question asked about characters, but reality TV’s about all I’ve got.
Emily Prentiss & David Rossi from Criminal Minds. No specific reason, except maybe that they take screentime from Reid & Garcia. And the fact the actors joined the show & got top billing over Shemar Moore, Matthew Gray Gubler, Thomas Gibson, etc.
Ryan Wolfe and Natalia Boa Vista on CSI Miami! So annoying! Horatio is at least entertaining with his sideways stance and constant on/off with his sunglasses!
Chuck, from Pushing Daisies. Although the hate is not irrational – I can’t stand her cloying, trying too hard to be cutesy demeanor. I also hated Juliet Darling in Dirty Sexy Money, but now she’s gone, so maybe…just maybe…
Meredith from Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve never watched the show, never seen more of the character than what they show in commercials, and yet? I hate her.
I somehow never liked Izzie from Grey’s Anatomy, but this might have something to do my attitude towards the actress playing her.
Sookie from Gilmore Girls was one of the most annoying and underacted characters on TV ever.
And I always wondered if they couldn’t make Lucas Scott from One Tree Hill a little more entertaining or interesting.
Kathleen – I agree with you whole-heartedly. Usually I’m IM-ing with friends while Heroes is on and as soon as we see Mohinder it’s a chorus of “SHUT UP, Mohinder!” For an allegedly intelligent scientist, he is definitely too stupid to live.
Also on my list: Maya from Heroes (although I don’t think many Heroes fans would call that irrational), Kate from Lost, and Carrie Bradshaw (nails on a chalkboard that one).
Annie you are the best! I also hate Julie. And Charlotte and Miranda on Sex And The City got on my nerves.
Jenny Shepard on NCIS. Not really sure why – I have nothing against Lauren Holly. But I hated Jenny. When they killed her I was happy to a degree that is really kind of ridiculous considering none of it is real.
Paolo and Nikki on Lost; Maya and her dumb brother on Heroes — these characters were so forced, like they were using a crow bar on the show to fit them in!
I also vote for Mohinder on Heroes. It’s too bad, because I’ve seen the actor on a talk show and he was likable and funny, but his character is awful!
Dawson on Dawson’s creek. Couldn’t explain it but I just cringed when he was on screen.
I hate Kitty from Brothers and Sisters. She’s whiny, obnoxious, self-centered and pretentious. The things that are so important to her and just ridiculous when compared to the realities the other characters are facing, ya know, coming out of the closet, dating your pseudo-sister, being a divorced woman, being fired by your brother, facing off against your husband’s mistress.
I also hate McDreamy from Greys. He’s not so McDreamy as he is spineless and whispery. I understand that he’s supposed to be the ying to Meredith’s yang, but the character never really does anything besides flip flop between Meredith and nurses in the hospital, and whisper angstily about how she won’t love him. Give me Alex’s complex and deep-seated issues or George’s morality crisis any day! If anything, they’ll keep it interesting!
Kim Bauer from 24 – Why didn’t the cougar just eat her?
Angela from Bones – I don’t know why I dislike her but I do! I think it’s because she calls Bones sweetie all the time. I find that so irritating.
Dualla from Battlestar Galactica – This is going to be an unpopular pick but I can’t help it. She just bugs me. I think it’s the fact that she ditched Billy for Lee which just felt so wrong.
Don’t know why, but I HATE Foreman on House. I like Omar Epps well enough, I just always skip over any sort of Foreman-centric episodes.
I couldn’t stand Debra Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond. I’m sure Patricia Heaton is a nice lady and all, but her character was annoying to me.
I hate Meredith Grey.
Jack on Lost. I HATE him. I’ll try to see the silver lining and call it great work on Matthew Fox’s part for making a character so inherently dislikable. Oh, and Chuck on Pushing Daisies.
Cuddy on House. I really liked her in S1, but somewhere around S3 I started yelling at her to stop acting/dressing like a prostitute and letting House get away with everything.
I hate “King of the Hill”’s Peggy Hill. I don’t think it’s irrational … her overinflated ego and self-importance definitely make her the least likeable character on the show ( yes, she’s more hateable than Dale. ) The last straw was a couple of seasons back when she intentionally sabotaged Lucky’s attempt to earn a GED because she thought that Luann( her neice, Lucky’s girlfriend ) could do better. Occasionally Peggy gets a much deserved comeuppance but during her shenanigans I’m ususally gritting my teeth and muttering “I just hate…her…so much !”
Although I love Friday Night Lights, I HATE Julie with a passion. Last season when her mother slapped her I cheered- she’s whiny and self-absorbed. Yes, I know she’s a teen and thus “supposed to act like that” but with her great parents you’d think she wouldn’t be quite so annoying.
Veronica Mars! Ugh, every guy I know just loved her spunky attitude (or SOMETHING), and any time I saw her on the tv I just wanted to scratch her eyes out.
Izzie on Grey’s. She started off ok, then they made her crazy, with Denny , and George and the deer. Maybe she’ll normal again this season. Oh George is annoying too.
dan from gossip girl. i hate him! i wish he would move in with his mom, allison, and then i would never have to see his smug little face again.
I hated Audrey Raines on “24″ but I have a very rational reason: she’s not good enough for Jack. Ugh.. Well, I hated Kim Raver when she was on “Third Watch” so I guess it just carried over
I don’t like Andrea Bowen either. Something about her face and her cutesy smart daughter dialogue. Not entirely her fault. Also, every character on Brothers and Sisters. Grating and boring all at the same time. And poor Sally Field, it seems like all she does is put on and take off those damn reading glasses and grimace.
Parker and Piz – Veronica Mars – especially Parker. She drove me freakin’ nuts! Also, Mya on Heroes. What purpose does she serve? Jo Harvelle, can you say He’s Just Not That Into You?
Kennedy, BTVS, Season 7. Better yet, DAWN on Buffy. Nothing about that character was remotely likeable for me – I absolutely loathed her. In scenes meant for viewers to feel bad or connected with her, I wanted to shove her into a hell portal.
