Last night’s twisty episode of Supernatural whetted X-Phile appetites with the first appearance of Mitch “AD Skinner” Pileggi. Too bad it looks like his last: As Sam and Dean’s demon-snatched grandpa, he exuded a feral viciousness I hadn’t seen since his turn as a serial killer in Wes Craven’s 1989 Shocker. After forcing Mary Winchester (and, by extension, Dean) into a hideous moral choice, he made an abrupt black-cloud exit. Not to worry, Skinner fans—Pileggi’s doing double duty as Kevin’s boss on Brothers & Sisters and as a white-supremacist gang leader on Sons of Anarchy. But what did you think of him and of last night’s episode, Supernatural faithful? Confess: Did you relegate the VP showdown to DVR? Or did you flip-flop between 1973 Kansas and 2008 St. Louis? What other X-Files stalwarts would you like to see on the show? (Cigarette Smoking Man, perhaps?) And about Pileggi, a final scary thought: Could he serve as Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson in Meltdown: The Movie?

The EWwy for Best Actor in a Drama Goes to Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles
Last week on ‘Supernatural’

I LOVED the episode. Jensen Ackles was great as always (and except for Misha, who is still fairly new, performing with actors that were all new to the show – so that had to be a challenge). And Mitch Pileggi .. great job! He definitely watched eps that had Fredric Lehne as the YED, because there were certainly times when he channeled that really well. And there was one moment, as YED talking to Dean, when his facial expression was (I swear) one that mirrored Jared Padalecki as Sam. And I also thought the young John and Mary were well cast.
I have to wait til tonight to see it on Space (the Canuk version of the Sci Fi network) as I don’t get the CW in my building. Sadness.
I thought that Mitch Pileggi was awesome, his scenes with Jensen were really great. As a quick side note, William B. Davis has actually already been on Supernatural, he guest-starred in the episode “Scarecrow” from season one.
Excellent episode all the way around. And Mitch Pileggi was great as a hunter/grandfather. I loved that Sam and Dean are named after Mary’s parents. Supernatural is my favorite show…
LOVED this episode- great twist. I hope they find a way to bring Mitch back. Had the Lone Gunman not been killed – I think they would have made great guests!
SPECTACULAR EPISODE: Pileggi and Ackles were excellent. Totally psyched for this season.
Also, want me some pie!!
I could honestly care less about the VP debates, especially when Supernatural is on. Jensen Ackles is the most underrated actors on television, and this episode proves it. It was amazing from start to finish and Ackles sold everything. Mitch was an amazing guest star, and I loved his take on the YED. It was more aggressive and feral than Frederic Lane’s, but somehow it still worked magnificently.
This was by far the best episode of Supernatural. I wish more people watched the show. But thank you so much, EW, for giving them as much exposure as you do! (It also makes up for your coverage of “The Hills.”)
An excellent cast for a difficult-to-cast episode. Mitch Pileggi in particular blew my mind–honestly I didn’t think anyone could top or even capture what Fredric Lehane brought to the role, but wow. I haven’t seen that kind of controlled savagery in an actor in quite some time.
this is one of the best shows on tv! the casting was great, in this episode! The actors playing young John and Mary, and the boy’s grandparents felt like the were truely faimly to the boys. JA did an awsome job!
CSM was already on the show. The scarecrow episode a few seasons back,I think. I love all the X-files references.
Haven’t seen this episode yet, had to DVR it while I catch up on the first couple of the season. Can’t wait to watch this one though!
I thought I was going to hate the newly found Winchester family, but I was surpised at how much I liked them. Mary I was expecting to be a total whiner, but she took a very surprising and well-done turn.
I also loved how we found out that Dean was named after Deanna. Nice touch.
I enjoy Supernatural but I can’t say I’m a huge fan, but last nights episode was simply awesome. It was intense, heartbreaking and had Mitch Pileggi! The twists and pay-offs were stunning. And the set-up for this season…I can’t wait wait.
I’m almost surprised how much I loved this episode.
I really liked this episode. It was nice seeing Skinner, again. Plus, Jensen Ackles was great.
