We have a new puppy-sized gallery of our favorite kid-friendly movies starring dogs. So far, there’s just a few films on the list, including such canine classics as My Dog Skip and Beethoven. (We’ve also thrown a bone to grown-ups by including Best in Show.) Still, this list ought to be St. Bernard-sized, which is why we need your recommendations of the very best dog movies. We know some of you will want to show your love for Lassie (in Lassie Come Home, pictured), Balto, Benji, and even poor Old Yeller. Bark out your choices — and your reasons why — in the comments section below.

Aside from all the obvious Disney choices -
In one of his non-eponymous roles, there’s Benji in “Oh Heavenly Dog”.
—
A little known breed features in a little known Steve Guttenberg film “Zeus and Roxanne” about a friendship between a dog and a dolphin.
—
Kenny Ortega’s Yorkie, Manly, is the perfect pocket pooch in the “High School Musical” movies, as Sharpay carries the dog as her favorite accessory.
—
And the Chihuahua often steals the scenes in “Legally Blonde” and “Legally Blonde 2″.
—
Just a few that come to mind.
Iron Will. Absolutely, this is the best dog movie ever made. Beautiful, beautiful huskies everywhere. And an Astin brother! And Kevin Spacey!
I love Shadow and Chance from Homeward Bound
Hands down it would be One Hundred and One Dalmations (1961). This is as good and comfortable as a Charlie Brown special. As entertaining and warm as Home Alone. A great storyline, cute animals, and one of the greatest villians ever (animated or not) in Cruella De Vil.
Benji!!! I loved the one where he goes to Greece. God I feel like I am 10 years old again when I think of that movie.
I know “Babe” is really more of a pig movie than dog movie, but it has dogs in it, and Babe thinks he is a sheep dog! What is funnier and more endearing than a bunch of talking animals!
So glad My Dog Skip is on that list- took my sons to see that when they were young- I’m sitting at the end of the movies just sobbing in my seat. TBS had it on their on every other minute list for a while and my kids would yell change it fast because I would burst into tears.-
While it isn’t a movie the Futurama episode “Jurrasic Bark” is abosolutely the most heart-breaking piece about a dog I have ever seen. I’ve seen it only once and won’t allow it to be played at our house. I dare anyone who has ever loved a dog to watch and not be a quivering blob by the end. (Yes I cried at the end of Eight Below too.)
8 Below
All Dogs Go To Heaven
Milo and Otis
Air Bud
Underdog
Chips the War Dog
Turner and Hooch
The Truth about Cats and Dogs
Must Love Dogs
Down and Out in Beverly Hills
The Fox and the Hound
Greyfriars Bobby
How The Grinch Stole Christmas
The Mask
Lady and the Tramp
Annie
Snow Dogs
But what was the one where the dog came from outer space…it was a smallish dog, either a Beagle or a Border Terrier and it was totally dogs against cats with the cats wanting to use people to do their bidding?
Best in Show.
Hands down Cats and Dogs
Where the Red Fern Grows, but ya gotta read the book first.
CuJo. Hands down!
Balto! I use to love that movie. I nominate it. It was such a great story of perseverance & compassion. Also, “The Shaggy Dog,” because he’s just so darn cute.
Homeward Bound
Oliver & Company
HOORAY for “My Dog Skip!!” The story shows the incredible bond between a boy and his dog. Check out the 100+ favorable reviews on Amazon.

Definitely Benji, the epitome of 70’s childhood (if Benji continued beyond that I am not aware).
And I agree with Richard – if you consider children’s books (never saw the movie) then you’d have to go with Where the Red Fern Grows.
I am also going to add some non disney films
the plague dogs(1982) An animated adaptation of Richard Adams’ novel, about a pair of dogs (Snitter and Rowf) who escape from a research laboratory and try to survive in the wild with the help of a cunning fox (The Tod). The lab director tries to keep the escape quiet, but as an increasing number of sheep are found killed, word leaks out, together with rumours that the dogs might be plague carrier http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084509/
diva dog: pit bull on wheels (2005) The story of Coral, who was left permanently paralyzed by a hit-and-run driver. She touched and inspired people wherever she went, and now her legacy lives on as the official spokesdog for disabled animals everywhere. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0479017/
When I was younger, I loved K-9. Although I haven’t seen it in a while, I’m sure I would still like it.
I don’t know if animation counts, but I always enjoyed the Balto-version from 1995. This movie, just like The Incredible Journey from 1963, totally had me hoping that everything would turn out fine for the characters.

I also cry EVERY time I see Jurassic Bark! I won’t allow my boyfriend to watch that episode of Futurama. I also wouldn’t even SEE 8 Below because I knew I would be turned into a complete disastrous mess by the end.
“Benji the Hunted” is the best. That’s the one where he looks after the lost cougar cubs (holy cuteness!) and lures an evil wolf off a cliff with his brilliance (which, btw, is one of the most unintentionally funny clips of all time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66IIMKONcjA)
Also, I have to give some love to “Turner and Hooch” (the comedy holds up quite well) and “Where the Red Fern Grows” (tugs at the heart-strings like no other).
You can’t forget The Sandlot!
You can’t forget The Sandlot!
The dog from space movie was called Good Boy, I think.
I am legend.
Homeward Bound – it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it but I love Shadow!
None?

Lou the Beagle from Cats & Dogs!
all dogs go to heaven was always my favorite as a kid
I dare anyone not to get misty eyed at the end of Homeward Bound!!
hasn’t anyone seen Where The Red Fern Grows? Best dog movie ever!
