Learning about seminal pop culture scenes in reverse

Because of all the election frou-frouing, I recently decided it was high time to see one of the greatest political dramas in American cinematic history: All the President’s Men. It was terrific, and I felt pretty embarrassed that as a former journalism student, I’d never seen it before. But what really got my attention was the scene where we meet Deep Throat in an underground parking lot (watch one of Bob Woodward (Robert Redford)’s encounters with DT below). All I could think was, "It’s Cigarette Smoking Man from The X Files!"

Have you ever watched a classic movie or TV show and realized that a scene or character had been repurposed, riffed on, or just plain ripped off by something more familiar to you? And maybe made you feel a little foolish for not knowing the original reference point? Spill the beans below!

I have always been aware of Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson but never read any of the stories or seen any of the tv specials. Earlier in the summer I started listening to the Sherlock Holmes radio shows on XM radio and got hooked. I started reading the books and rented the series starring Jeremy Brett and even listened to the old radio shows with Sir John Gielgud. Then when I was watching reruns of House a couple of weeks ago, I smacked my forhead, duh! House/Wilson, Holmes/Watson. Their relationships with each other are identical, even down to the apartment number, 221, and Holmes & House’s chemical dependancies. Talk about catching on late.

Clueless was based on Jane Austen’s Emma. Duh!

The Prisoner. So many later movies, tv shows stole/paid homage to TP.
    I’m looking at you JJ.

The first time I watched Aladdin as an adult, I realized just how much of Genie’s riffing (Ed Sullivan, Jack Nicholson) had previously gone over my head.

About 10 years ago, I had a chance to see Gone With the Wind in a theater. I thought it was the perfect place to finally see the classic. I was so bored! I’d seen the overall story as well as various scenes in so many other forms, that I couldn’t stand it.

Growing up with the Simpsons meant I saw spoofs and borrowed storylines long before I saw the source materials. The one that initially comes to mind is their take on “Cape Fear.” When I saw Scorsese’s, it was difficult to not think of Robert DeNiro as playing a version of Sideshow Bob.

“The Mentalist” is “Psych” retooled to be serious.

There’s a shot in “Goodfellas” which I have always thought was just brilliant. And then I saw “In the Heat of the Night” and realized Marty had straight lifted it.

I saw the Lion King before I read Hamlet in high school.

Hate to be The Correcting Person but it’s Deep Throat and his first season meetings with Mulder, not Cigarette Smoking Man…

Animaniacs/Pinky and the Brain – the episode where Brain is voicing commercial spots. It was funny as a stand alone, but HILARIOUS after I learned it was based on Orson Welles outtakes. Thanks to Mark and Brian radio show (Los Angeles area) for introducing the original to me and making me laugh twice over!
