Doing some fall closet cleanout over the weekend, I came across a stack of old cassingles — oh how the word ‘cassingle’ warms my heart — and decided it was time to make like Beyoncé and Jay-Z and upgrade ‘em. So I headed over to iTunes and downloaded such delights as Weezer’s "Undone (the Sweater Song)," Pebbles’ "Giving You the Benefit," and K7’s "Come Baby Come." (Let he who is without early ’90s musical sins cast the first stone!)
Unfortunately, I discovered that several songs I wanted weren’t available on iTunes, including the following:
Cathy Dennis (pictured, left), "You Lied to Me"
Shakespear’s Sister (pictured, right), "You’re History"
Kym Sims, "Too Blind to See It"
Nu Shooz, "Point of No Return" (not to be confused with Expose’s track of the same name)
KLF (featuring Tammy Wynette), "Justified and Ancient" (iTunes only has the non-Tammy version. WTF?)
Lisa Lisa, "Skip to My Lu"
Sabelle, "Where Did the Love Go (Say What, Say What, Say What?)"
Outrage alert! Tell me how iTunes can justify their failure to provide the public with these tragic essential tracks? And more importantly, where can I get ‘em? And while we’re on the subject, share with your fellow PopWatchers the list of songs you love that you haven’t been able to purchase digitally. As a reward for not mocking my musical taste too brutally your participation, I’ve embedded the video for "Where Did the Love Go (Say What, Say What, Say What?)" after the jump. Ch-ch-check that hot flute line. You know you love it!
More on old-school music:
Apparently, many twentysomethings don’t know KLF’s ‘3 A.M. Eternal’
More iPod inspections!
‘Why Wasn’t This a Huge Hit?’: Juliana Hatfield’s ‘Universal Heartbeat’
How did US radio miss out on S Club 7’s ‘Don’t Stop Movin’?

Last week I wanted to download an AC/DC song or three only to find they are nowhere on iTunes! Bummer.
Blaque’s 808 Remix. I check itunes every few months in hopes that apple has figured out that this song is a must have.
Try amazon.com. They have used CD’s for pennies, plus shipping. I got a George Michael CD for less than $5 – about $.45 a song (beat that, iTunes!). And I soooo cannot judge you. Last night I decided that I reallly needed to download Rapper’s Delight by The Sugarhill Gang. I haven’t been able to get on iTunes this week because my modem is going bonkers, but I’ll be interested to see if they have it.
Mells, I forgot about AC/DC. Very sad that I cannot add Thunderstruck to my running song list (without having to buy a CD). And no Kid Rock. That does not leave me heartbroken, though I would not mind having one or two of his songs on my ipod.
“Diamonds” by Janet Jackson and Herb Alpert. I really like that song!
I cannot find a copy of Buck Owens’ version of “My Bucket’s Got a Hole in It” anywhere. Legally or not. If anyone can get me a copy of that song, I will give you five dollars. For real.
I was desperate for some Bob Seger not too long ago and the only one iTunes has is on the Forrest Gump soundtrack, and you have to buy the whole CD which I refuse to do.
My ipod is chock full of rare one-hit wonders that can only be found by scrubbing the internet, friends, and various other sources. My personal (and the one that drove me crazy trying to find) Scarlett & Black’s “You Don’t Know”. The vid is on youtube, which is how I stumbled across the song. 2 months later, I finally found it. Some other rarities: “Glory of Love” by Peter Cetera (you can only find some bizarre karoke version), “Pop Muzik” by 3rd Party, and “In My Dreams” by The Party (back when the Mickey Mouse Club was making its initial return).
I just watched the movie “The Beach” this weekend and remembered how much I love the song that plays when Francoise comes out of the ocean before they reach the island and I scoured iTunes for not only the soundtrack but at least just that one song! Sadly iTunes has neither and by the way it’s “Woozy” by Faithless.
Major Tom by Peter Schilling. On itunes you can only get it in german or bad techno remix.
I, too, have a bunch of cassette singles stashed in a closet. I don’t want to look at iTunes. But I was a sucker for those New Kids labels mates, Perfect Gentlemen, Tommy Page, and I think there were others. I know that I have a single from Shakespeare’s Sister, but I think it was a different song. Don’t worry…we survived the early 90s and lived to tell about it.
Boy Meets Girl “Waiting For A Star To Fall”. I love that song!
I have several CD’s that are scratched upon repair. Most, are on iTunes, but 1 isn’t. ITunes doesn’t have the 3rd 112 album, Part III. That was the best!!! They have 1,2, 4, and I think 5, but not the 3rd. A travesty.
I simply cannot find Seawind’s “Window of a Child” anywhere. It only exists presumably in the tape racks of the local smooth jazz station.
Anything by the Beatles – thankfully I have their entire catalog on CD. I was looking for some Badfinger songs and could only find second-rate K-Tel-esque compilation covers. UGH. And the Pat McGee Band – why can’t I find them?
Two words: Flashdance Soundtrack
Tammy and KLF are here:

“Crash” by the Primitives. My BFF and I have both lost our copies (Her: hurricane, Me: stupidity). Frankly, we are getting a little desperate!
iTunes only got Radiohead’s Creep very recently.
Or you can try amazon.com’s digital download section. It is perfectly compatible with iTunes.
Anne – Good point about Kid Rock too! I looked high and low for his duet w/ Sheryl Crow, I think it’s called ‘Picture’ but to no avail.
On the plus side for iTunes: I did notice that they have the first half of season 4 episodes of Battlestar Galactica that I missed (with the exception of one episode 4) so I’ll be able to watch those before the last half airs in the spring. =-)
I wanted Big Audio Dynamite’s Rush, but it was not to be.
iTunes doesn’t have “Reality” by Electronic. Amazon.com has it though.
Not a song, BUT… iTunes Store has the first six Harry Potter AudioBooks, but not the last one. How come?
Venus by Bananarama – they only have a terrible techno version.
“Money (That’s what I want)” by the Flying Lizards
“Travelling Man/Beautiful Loser” by Bob Seger
I am disappointed that I can’t get Kid Rock songs off iTunes, there are time when you need a little “Bawitaba”.
You can’t get “Be My Baby” by the Ronettes — you have to buy the whole Dirty Dancing soundtrack! And you can’t get Dionne Faris “I Know What You’re Doing,” but you can get the video. Why, why?
iTunes has a pathetically small offering of Smiths songs. What’s up with that? The thing that is absolutely driving me crazy is my inability to find a place to download songs from the UK. Tried iTunes UK, but they won’t take my credit card. Found a ton of great songs on Tesco.com, of all places – but they’re not iPod compatible. Artists like Amy McDonald, Paolo Nutini, Jamie T. Can anyone help!?
Sesame’s Treet by the Smart E’s.
