'Worst Week': Yep, I enjoyed the timeslot buddy of 'Two and a Half Men'

Worstweek_lI recognize CBS’ Worst Week isn’t being touted as ‘hip comedy’ (being as it is on CBS, after all). And yet last night’s series premiere made me laugh throughout, even though the bulk of its funniest punch lines and set-ups were featured in that highlight-reel promo that I blogged about last week.

Certainly, the show wouldn’t work without the adorably manic energy of star Kyle Bornheimer (left); I loved his reaction shot after finding there wasn’t a single towel in his passed-out coworker’s bathroom. And a lesser comic actor never would’ve made me howl as I did last night during what was essentially a rehash of the "miscommunication over International phone line" scenario. ("He’s dead. Your dad is dead. He died. HE’S DEAD!")

But I’ve also got to give a little credit to Bornheimer’s on-screenlove interest Erinn Hayes (right), who as Melanie delivers the necessary amount of long-suffering exasperation toward her perpetually do-wrong boyfriend while never leaving you wondering "Why doesn’t she just dump the guy?" And while the writing tends toward broad physical set-ups, last night’s pilot contained plenty of subtly goofy one-liners (like Sam’s angry coworker hissing "I know Tai Chi," or that bit where Sam gets caught threatening to (comically) punch Melanie in the face) to keep me tuned in next Monday. What did you think of Worst Week? And will you be watching subsequent episodes? Let’s get your take in the comments section below!

It was good. I’ll be tuning in next time. Too bad my “Old Christine” can’t be moved back to Monday so I could watch them both on the same day!

I laughed at all the jokes…when they were in “Meet the Parents”. The star does what he can and I will admit a chuckle during the (“He’s dead. Your dad is dead. He died. HE’S DEAD!”) part. Most of it just seemed like just seemed like rehash.

We laughed through the entire show! True comedy has returned to television. Can’t wait til next week!

It feels like we’ve seen this in numerous sitcoms a million times before. I didn’t laugh once. Doubt this will last long.

The first episode was extremely funny, but I worry that this type of behavior will get very old very fast after a few weeks. It would work for a British TV show which have very short “series”, but may not work in a 20+ episode season.

  • Babs

It was amusing enough. I’ll give it a chance for now. However, the overseas phone call bit was too nearly identical to the one in “Roseanne” for me to enjoy it. All I could think of was Laurie Metcalf.

I thought it was very funny. I believe we have seen most of this before in one way or another but it was refreshing to see a new comedy with actors that are likeable. I will definitely give it a few more weeks.

I agree with Babs, Laurie Metcalf’s turn with the…”he’s passed away…HE’S DEAD!” was the best. It was a little painful for me, but Bornheimer seems pretty capable. I don’t know how sustainable this is for weeks and weeks.

A very pleasant surprise. But like other posters, you gotta wonder how they are going to sustain those types of setups.

SLEZAK, That phone call about Dad being dead is an homage to my favorite Roseanne moment. When Jackie has to tell Auntie Barabra that “Dad id dead”. Here’s the youtube clip:

It’s in the last minute or so.
It’s either a homage or straight stolen. What do you think?

I agree — very funny!! But can they keep it for the whole “week”? And can’t remember – how low was the pot that the goose was marrinating in ???

Need I remind you, How I Met Your Mother is on CBS and I feel like there isn’t a more youthful, contemporary comedy on the air than that one.

  • Cheril

Loved the episode. It reminds me a lot of Meet the Parents.

  • Luis PJ

I’m shock that there no How I Met Your Mother recap either on the TV section or even on Popwatch section and shame on Slezak for reforcing the stereotype of CBS instead of breaking it(:rolleyes)
As for the show, I enjoy it and while alot of people are asking if these can continue, as along as there are viewers who feel like this happen to them on some bases, then it can work out.

  • Betha85

Yeah i thought it was hilarious too! And i’m not worried about it getting old, i thought Kyle Bornheimer was great and can keep the comedy feeling fresh…the peeing on the goose thing def had me laughing out loud…
