On a scale of 1 to 10: 'SNL' season premiere

On a scale of 1 to 10, how awesome was the Tina Fey-as-Palin, Amy Poehler-as-Clinton opening of Saturday Night Live’s season premiere, embedded below? (10.)How awesome was the rest of the show? (You tell me. I found myself fast-forwarding. A lot.)How worried were you that Lil Wayne’s pants were going to fall down? (7. It was, however, a 10 at the MTV Video Music Awards.)

For more on Tina Fey, check out EW’s April ‘08 cover story, then vote for her — and 30 Rock — in our Emmy pool. (You can also vote for SNL’s Kristen Wiig in our first annual EWwy Awards, which honor the shows and performers snubbed in the Emmy nominating process.)For the latest 30 Rock casting scoop, crack open The Ausiello Files.

Absolutely hated the show, except for Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin (which she nailed). We ended up turning on Friends re-runs, and turning off the crap skits that Saturday Night Live was attempting to make funny.

Yeah, the opening was greatness, but the rest was downright awful. Love ya, Michael Phelps, but please don’t ever attempt to act again. It didn’t help that they recreated the Peyton Manning dancing sketch — that was a lot of fun the first time. Don’t try to recreate it with someone less entertaining.
But even if Phelps wasn’t on there, it was still an extremely weak season premiere. That restaurant sketch with the new guy constantly saying “pepper” was painfully bad. Come on, SNL, you can do much better.

  • Snsetblaze

I did not watch the show so I can’t comment on the rest but the opening was hilarious – and on the mark.

  • tina

Intro was hilarious. I kept cringing throughout the rest, and flipping over to watch other things. I’d come back to see if it still sucked, and yes, it still sucked. I did catch the end of the Quiz Bowl between the home-schooled FLDS and public school kids, and that seemed like it was funny (from what I saw). The rest…blew. And yes, Michael Phelps, you’re a nice guy and a great athlete, but please stick to swimming.

  • dave

Great opening. A few good moments like the T-mobile commercial. But the rest was pretty bad.

  • Sheri

The intro was very funny and the t-mobile was good, but the rest was just not funny at all. Could have been ALOT better

  • stacy

I give Tina’s Sarah a 12! She absolutely nailed it. Hysterical!
The rest absolutely sucked. What happened to the McCain/Obama sketch?
I was very disappointed that Obama backed out of the show too.

    Saturday Night Live?
    It’s still on?
    Why?

  • Amyelissa

Tina Fey nailed it as all 30 Rock fans knew she would!

  • Mary

Heah John McCain – I want to suggest you switch Palin for Fey – Tina Fey I think would be a much better choice! Think of it this way – if you want a co-runner with little Washington experience – Fey would be a better choice. Fey would be great as entertainment at state dinners – she has funnier friends – and she is down with babies – Just watch Baby’s Momma! Fey for Vice President !!

  • Shelew

Great intro. Tina was a sure clone. Fact is that I wasn’t sure if it was Tina or Sarah. I have watched SNL since day one. I thought perhaps I was getting, but this wshow was terrible.

  • John from NC

Palin has now been fully subsumed. A few years from now, we won’t even remember who she was without first thinking of Fey’s ripping satire. And Phelps will be, “Oh, right, the guy who won all the swimming medals. So whatever happened to Mark Spitz?”

  • abc

While the intro was very funny, the rest of the show is typical SNL-god-awful.
Also, it’s pretty lame that SNL is going to write Palin as another “stupid, religous, nut-job.” I mean they’ve only done that since Gerald Ford.
And I wholly anticipate all of the people who will say, “But she is a stupid religious nut-job!! Hee-Hee-Hee, I’m so clever.”

  • LaMonica

Tina fey ROCKED IT as that dimwit Palin. The rest was bland.

  • tony

you guys are idiots. the opening wasn’t about tina fey coming back as Palin or whatever else you might think it is. it was commentary about our election in satire. and it was important. “I invite the media to grow a pair, and if they won’t, then they can borrow mine” That’s SNL saying it right there

  • carol

Tina Fey was amazing–she is very talented and got all of Sarah’s inflections and gestures perfectly. Do you remember Tim Conway playing the shuffling old man? If SNL could get him to play “you know who” that would be the ticket!!

  • Trace

The opening bit with Tina Fey was priceless, if expected and a bit inevitable. The rest of the show? Not so much. Unjustly, SNL will continue to pump the first five minutes of their show with nice bits like this and rule the Sunday news roost; most forgetting to mention the near constant, excruciating suck of the remaining 80 or so minutes. Sad, hard to admit…but true.

  • joanna

The Palin/Clinton bit was great, but it is a shame that it was based on the “official media spin” given to the heavily and apparently purposively edited ABC interview. See the full version of the interview here:

    Beginning was a good laugh.
The rest of the show was HORRIBLE. Really horrible.

  • Ashley

I was completely saddened by the lack of interest that Lorne has shown in his creation. If he really cared about this show any more he would fire the writing staff and bring in some new guys and gals that know how to write humor for television. For crying out loud I watch the pre-millennium seasons and I laugh until it hurts but the second I watch a post-Fallon, Fey, Morgan, Ferrel episode I cry until it hurts.

  • SNL watcher

I give last night’s show a Meh. The opening skit was funny, but not a classic.

  • Alg

Tina Fey is fabulous as Governor Palin and Amy Poehler is good as Clinton. SNL has its political satire back and I look forward to the next six weeks of the campaign.

  • laylagalise

That was hilarious! Really, the funniest thing I’ve seen on SNL in a very long time.

  • Laura

The opening was hilarious. They completely nailed everything about both candidates, and I was SO glad they got Tina to come on. I totally agree with Mary… Choose Tina over Palin any day. 11!! here.
The show was pretty good for them. Some sketches were hilarious – the Jar Glove, T-Mobile, and the Phelps diet to name a few. Some felt a little bleh… I’d say 8 or 9.
And 10 on Lil’ Wayne. Get some new pants dude, ones that fit!

  • JJ

While the opening skit was funny, I thought the rest of the show was awful. The game show skit was completely boring, the swimming coach scene was totally unfunny, and Weekend Update was laugh-free (particularly Andy Samberg as Cathy and another dreaded bit of Fred Armisen as Nicholas Fehn). I love the show and can only hope it improves as the year moves along.

  • Frankel

Very funny skit – Tina Fey is right-on as Sarah Palin and Amy has done a good Hillary all along. I look forward to more satire in the next 6 weeks.

  • Alg

    Exellent

  • Tom

    dumb-ass so called comedy crap.

  • MsDaisy

Other than a few bits during Presidential election cycles, SNL has not been funny in the last 2 decades. It’s time to pull the plug.

  • DoctorJ

Opening skit: 8. It was good, but not one we’ll be replaying for years to come. Every other skit, including weekend update: 1. Awful. Average for whole show: 2. I’m not sure why I wasted the electricity to power the digital video recorder.
