Happy Birthday, Peter Scolari!

Sure, other celebrities were born today — Jason Statham, Paul Walker, Benjamin McKenzie — but did they star on Bosom Buddies? No, no they did not.

P.S. I’m too young to really remember Bosom Buddies. Do I need to own the complete series?

I saw the show on USA channel reruns back in the 80’s. It’s actually pretty funny, but would probably feel a little dated now.
However, it’s a heck of a lot more watchable than the crappy sitcom they stuck David Chappelle into called “buddies”. Wow was that show bad.

I fondly remember watching the show, and have always wondered why Peter Scolari didn’t hit it as big as Tom Hanks did.
An interesting piece of trivia that I never knew about the opening theme song is that it was sung by the cast, with Tom Hanks as lead singer. Once I listened to it with that knowledge, I can totally hear that it’s him.

I want some of whatever Melinda65 is on.

Just Hulu it – it should be on there, right? Someone at EW has to have that…

Well, Brian, I’m on my chair. :-)
Are you referring to my comment about Peter Scolari not hitting it bigger? OK, so maybe he isn’t as facile as Hanks, but I always liked him and thought he was funny. Plus, he juggles! Jugglers are always in demand, right?…OK, maybe not.

I was there in the beginning. It was hilarious!

I fondly remember the power-house ABC Tuesday night lineup:
    8:00 – “Happy Days”
    8:30 – “Laverne & Shirley”
    9:00 – “Mork & Mindy”
    9:30 – “Bosom Buddies”
Ok, did I just date myself?

  • Stephanie T,

Buddies was stupid. Bosom Buddies was funny in the beginning, but I think that Pete was funnier on Newhart.

Are you sure that Tom Hanks sang lead on the theme? It does not sound like him doing a cover of My Life. I think that you are refering to version in which when and Peter explained the plot of the show then it went into the theme song.

Well, now I don’t know what to believe. IMDb says it is the cast, Wikipedia says it’s not (and that it’s Joel himself, which I’m sure it wasn’t.) However, neither one is rock-solid in terms of use as a reference. It could be one of those rumors that has been repeated enough to make it “fact.”

is it just me or does peter scolari resemble robert sean leonard from house?

Its sorta silly now, but at the time “Bosom Buddies” writing was sorta cutting edge, at least new and different. It would appear very stale now, but I remember laughing when the buddies were living in a condemned building as one asks, “Is that a rat?” and the other asks, “Either that or a very ugly kitten.” Stupid now, but funnier and unlike a lot of sitcom jokes of the time.

OK, am I the only one who’s noticed that Peter Scolari’s date is Rita Wilson, who went on to become Tom Hanks’ wife???
By the way, I absolutley LOVED this show way back in the 80s!

What a funny show! Excellent stupid sitcom humor and they had really wonderful timing with each other. Taylor Holland (who is one of my most favoritist actresses ever) was excellent as their boss. Hulu it and then decide if owning is sensible. question- how friggin’ cute is Peter Scolari? answer SO friggin’ cute!

if you can Netflix the series, do that first…see if you bond with the show and need to buy it…I wouldn’t recommend purchasing it, it wasn’t all that, but it had a few laughs…
