PopWatch Previewer: 'Shopaholic,' 'Soul Men,' and 'Nothing Like the Holidays'

Confessions of a Shopaholic
February 13

Plot: A spunky gal (Isla Fisher) with a weak spot for clothes pads her resume and ends up writing about financial advice at a magazine. Apparently she falls down a lot, too.

Looks like: 27,000 Dresses

Verdict: If Fisher is half as funny here as she was in Wedding Crashers, Shopaholic will definitely be a smart purchase.

More sneak peeks — Soul Men and Nothing Like the Holidays — after the jump!

Soul Men
November 7

Plot: An estranged soul singing duo (Mac and Jackson) take a road trip to NYC’s Apollo Theater for a reunion show.

Looks like: The Banger Brothers

Verdict: Even though the roadtrip buddycom genre has plenty of mileage, Soul Men might just go the distance with pros like Mac and Jackson at the wheel.

Nothing Like the Holidays
November 21

Plot: The members of a Puerto Rican family (including JohnLeguizamo, Alfred Molina, and Debra Messing) come together for aturbulent Christmas.

Looks like: La Familia Stone

Verdict: Everyone loves unwrapping a good family dramedy for the holidays, but Nothing looks like it might be regifting old material.

Your turn, PopWatchers. Do you buy Isla Fisher as a Shopaholic? Does Soul Men hit all the right notes? And does Nothing Like the Holidays look like a Christmas feast or just a turkey?

The big suprise for me in the Shopaholic trailer is that Fisher is American. Becky is supposed to be a Brit. I think it’s really going to change things. :(

    I’ll give Shopaholic a try.

I’m disappointed that they changed Becky to American as well. Alot of the humor in the books was British and I just don’t think it will be the same. I’m going to have to pass. I think Kate Beckinsale would have been a brilliant choice for Becky!

It looks like no one in that cast is Puerto Rican. Columbian, Spanish, Mexican, Debra Messing, but not Puerto Rican. It looks a mash-up of This Christmas and The Family Stone

  • Gretchen Weiners

Becky Bloomwood isn’t Becky Bloomwood without being English! That’s half her charm – her Englishness! Big disappointment there :o (

  • CAP

Not only is Becky not British in the movie but she is being played by Isla Fisher, who is British with a fake American accent! The quirky English characteristcs of the books are what makes them so funny. So disappointed!

I agree with everyone who is disappointed that Beckie Bloomwood is now American. I’ll probably go see Soul Men because it’s one of Bernie Mac’s last movies and I love him so much. Nothing like the Holidays looks like Christmas leftovers, but I’m relieved that Debra Messing isn’t playing a Puerto Rican woman. I’m also glad that the movie doesn’t seem to be about her fitting in with her husband’s family. Actually, I’m lot sure what it’s about, but with Freddie Rodriguez in the cast, I might go see it anyway.:)

    Isla Fisher is Australian :)

  • Tatra

Um..CAP…Isla Fisher is American. She doesn’t have an accent.

  • kathgal

    Um, nope, Fisher is Australian.

  • Raven_Moon

I’m not super impressed with any of these trailers. Just to clear things up, though, according to imdb.com Isla was born to Scottish parents in the Middle Eastern country of Oman, but she grew up in Australia.

Saw a raw cut of Nothing Like the Holidays, features Freddie Rodriguez in a serious role (recent vet returning from the war), and he also had a part behind getting it produced, I thought Gio was annoying but have more respect for him now. And Debra Messing is the outsider trying to fit in… just go see it!

From your list I am looking forward to “Nothing like the Holidays”. Not only because it’s always a pleasure to watch extremely talented Freddy Rodriguez perform but because I am latina myself. :)
Besides that, the movie serves a good purpose. The producers aim to break a niche in the industry to be the first of many good quality latino films in hollywood. I hope they reach their objective. I am so watching that film!
