I love trailers. Honestly, I do. When they’re good, they’re perfectly honed mini-masterworks. (My favorite of the last few years was the spot for Little Children, which plays like a tense gem of a short film.) If my keister isn’t planted in a movie-theater seat in time for the trailers, I am not a happy boy. But recently, some unfortunate tics have crept into trailer design and the new spot for Quantum of Solace bears my least favorite: the strobe-dissolve. It’s when the image all but throbs at you, giving mere snatches of a scene before quickly fading to black. In theory, it’s supposed to imply a sense of rhythmic urgency. Instead, it doesn’t give me anything to sink my teeth into, and thus leaves me a little disoriented. ("Wait, what am I looking at? Oh, there it goes…")
But then, Daniel Craig falls out of a window, through a skylight, and into a scaffolding, and all is right with the world.
When I heard Finding Neverland‘s Marc Forster was directing Quantum, I was a little concerned that I wouldn’t get the explodo I so rightfully expect from a Bond flick. Judging from this spot, though, I think I can put those fears to rest. But what about you—does this seem likely to make good on the promise of Casino Royale, or is it a lot of sound and stiff-upper-lipped fury signifying nothing?

Wow, that was amazing. I think I like it better than the first one!!
That high-pitched “Eeeee!” from the Boston area is me. I’m pretty darn psyched about this one.
Like all other James Bond films before this one, it looks like it will not disappoint. Although, I have to admit, I wish they’d bring back John Cleese as ‘Q’.
Sorry, Marc, but I don’t get your mini-gripe with the trailer at all. It doesn’t seem any more egregious than any other action/drama trailer out there, and I found it pretty easy to follow what was happening (then again, maybe it doesn’t seem to different to me because most trailers are doing this “strobe dissolve).
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is this movie looks fantastic.
I’m so glad the reinvention of the Bond movies play like films, not cartoons! My only complaint is the title “Quantum of Solace”. Really, what does that mean?
okay…all the screaming from Canada–that would be me. How cool is it when the James Bond theme starts in at the 1:50 mark…
Lisa Beach – because THESE Bond titles made a whole lot of sense???
- Never Say Never Again
- A View to a Kill
- The Living Daylights
- The World is not Enough
Casino Royale was sexy but a bit cartoony. This one feels less sexy but more realistic.
Wow! It looks amazing. And Daniel Craig shirtless? Swoon!
Trailer Looks FANTASTIC!!! It’s James Bond, so of course I wouldn’t expect anything less. Now I’m really excited about seeing Quantum. The next Bond Spy Thriller after this movie should be a REMAKE of “Live and Let Die” – detailed EXACTLY like Ian Fleming’s Classic Novel. Angelina Jolie as Solitare, PERFECT. That’s just wishful thinking on my part. I’m really surprised a Bond movie hasn’t already been remade, especially with today’s dazzling visual effects. On second thought, maybe it’s better that they DON’T. Is it November YET???
ARE YOU KIDDIN ME? It looks awesome! Daniel Craig is kickin ass, plus Jeffery Wright is da man. And i can’t wait for Alicia’s song…it will be a classic!
Actually the title makes a great deal of sense. Quantum is an amount. Solace is comfort. This movie seems to be about bond getting vengeance over vesper being killed to say find a small amount of comfort? Hm…knowing what words means usually helps in understanding a title. Use a dictionary…
Marc, I’m right there with ya. I will chase after previews of movies that I’m not rlly interested in, just to see those 30 seconds of potential awesomeness. I also agree that a whole lot of trailers these days don’t give much (if any) idea about the actual movie, which doesn’t make me very happy. But THIS… this looks like awesomeness.
Do I love the trailer? No, not really. There are others that they come up with that are better. Does it make me any less excited to see the film? Nope. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
Dude, what are you on?!?!? This looks freakin awesome! I hate to admit it but the new Bond series looks like it may outstrip all previous films in no time all. Sure, the old school films were tongue in cheek and classic Connery but this is a whole new ball game! Super stoked for QOS! (btw the World is not Enough is a reference to the Bond family motto, as mentioned in both the film and a number of the Ian Fleming Bond books).
