What did you think of MTV's Video Music Awards?

  • Pink_vmamtv_lWell, the show is over, and in our opinion there were definitely some ups (Pink, pictured, and Lil Wayne, holla!), downs (what was up with cutting several of the performances short??), and sidewayses (Russell Brand — oddball or charmer?). PopWatchers, what did you think? (Visit our live blog if you missed it.) Don’t keep it bottled up — sing out in the comments section below!

THAT BRIT MC, BRAND WAS VERY QUICK ON HIS FEET, KEPT THINGS MOVING,PINK, WAS GREAT, WHAT IS IT WITH L’LL WAYNE??

  • ilana P

Russell Brand is most certainly an oddball–but absolutely hilarious. I thought he did a great job tonight. He likes to push the envelope and wasn’t scared to poke fun of the Jonai–but he meant no harm. He carried the show and without him as the host I would regard the show as terrible.

This show made me remember what it’s like to have freedom of speech and freedom of opinions in this country. Russell Brand definately pushed the envelope to a nation who are becoming increasingly dependant on things being sanitized and sugarcoated for them. Not sure everyone’s ready for it but I found him refreshingly opinionated in a time when opinions are dangerous to have. I also found him funny, but that’s my sense of humor. The performances were mostly great: Paramore, Pink, T.I. &Rihanna, were higlights for me. Britney’s bit was cute but a performance might’ve been better. Jonas brothers were probably ok with jokes until Sparks made it into an “issue” and not everyone who has sex is a slut. Seemed a little extreme…but maybe it just pushed her buttons…anyway, she definately got even…on the same level. All in all I was entertained and I think that’s what it’s really about in the end…I mean it’s television!

I thought Russell Brand rocked! I loved how he railed against them teen virgins, manufactured pop-tarts. Really refreshing to have him! I think we can all say that a star was born! Hopefully his performance will further raise his profile.

  • Courtney

Russell Brand was awesome. Funny, charming, and didn’t gloss over things. However, interrupting Robert Pattinson’s introduction of Paramore annoyed me a little. Pink was by far my fav performance!!

  • jaylinbee

OMG, Russell Brand is my hero. And to all those Jonas fans getting all freaked out– it was a joke! I’m guessing what Jordin Sparks did was more embarrassing (although I must say, she has the right to speak her mind). She kind of turned a joke into this serious issue. And she called an awful lot of Americans sluts. Anywho, I loved seeing Britney lookin’ so good, and I’m glad she finally won some VMA’s, although I must admit it seemed a little deliberate by the end. Still, I love Britney and MTV does too. Pink was awesome, LOVED Christina’s Genie remake, and freakin’ McLovin! That guy was awesome. Zac and Vanessa need to break up already. TI is super hot. Kid Rock seemed a little out of place, but all in all, better than last year.

Does it even mean anything if I criticize the winners?? I mean — I understand why the producers wanted to suck up to Britney, although her scripted thank-yous don’t make me think she’s really much closer to being able to properly think for herself.
But c’mon — Slash got it right when he giggled at Linkin Park. Pussycat Dolls? Tokio Hotel?? And I don’t really consider myself outside the MTV generation when they’ve got old farts like Slash and Demi Moore presenting. How random.
I thought the show really lacked energy in such a small space — needed a bigger theatre with real fans. And I would have liked to see some kind of retrospective to celebrate the 25 years. Pink was good; Xtina was good; Rihanna was fine, but there was no real show-stopping performance.
I like Russell Brand but I think they left a LOT on his shoulders: other than his presence and the ongoing virginity issue, I didn’t think think the show had much of an overall theme.
    Oh, and Kanye was underwhelming.

Personally, I think this was the WORST vmas ever. The first mistake mtvmade was the hype about Britney, and she said what, like four lines? Russell Brand was, well, lets say that I’m not easily offended, so his opinions didn’t bother me, but I found him to be silly and an inadequate host what with all the mumbling about whats “real” and “not real”. The venue was also way too small, it looked like a high school auditorium, not a vma venue. The fact that almost none of the performances were inside is evidence of that. And as for the performances, well, they were really, REALLY lacking in style. Rihanna? Please, that looked like your every day concert performance not at all VMA worthy. Basically, I was just severely disappointed

Russell Brand is an self-impressed ass. I am no fan of the current regeme, but I am sick of people like him speaking about our politics as if he were a US citizen and his vote (or opinion) mattered. He certainly didn’t do any favors for Obama tonight. If he thinks it’s so bad here, he needs to stay in his own country and not take another dime from ours. His comments in general were crude and irresponsible. You could tell by the lack of applause and laughter, the live audience wasn’t so impressed with him either.

  • jade

    omw it was awsome

  • tj1968

Russell Brand I thought was funny. Not scripted cheesy funny like we’re used to, but a genuinely funny person. Britney took the night, and maybe she needs the boost of confidence. I love Hayley Williams, so i gotta give it up to her big red extensions. That girl can do no wrong.

  • Molly

Horrible and offensive trash. Disgraceful to treat the Jonas Bro. like that. Name-calling of the Pres. (no matter your opinions on politics) on national television is never O.K.

  • Kara Hassell

TERRIBLE! Russell was a horrible host and he was so rude to cut off the Twilight cast. I couldn’t even understand him half the time. And what was with the TINY theatre? I give the awards an F!

  • Anonymous

i loved brand. he was ANYTHING but boring and traditional.

  • H

Didn’t care for the venue or much else, but Pink’s performance was good and it was nice to see Britney! I’m glad she skipped the performance this year.
It’s too bad Russell didn’t make nearly as many crude jokes towards someone like Kanye with a huge ego that would thrive on the drama as he did toward the Jonas brothers. One may think the promise rings are annoying or their pants are too tight, but they obviously seem like good kids for now who don’t cause trouble and are fine role models. It’s sad to see them the subject of dumb ridicule like that.

  • laura

Russell Brand was very nice. The place where it was held was horrible!!! What pisses me off the most is the lack of attention of the crowd .. I mean come on how hard is to fake a smile or a clap???? you won those damn sits and don’t clap? … booo!
oooh also the guests! …. alittle more ‘feeling’ place thanks.

  • BJ

Like i said to the People that was Trashing Russel, U must Be a Republican, Stop Trahing on his Hosting just cuz he made a remark at Bush and the REP. Freedom of Speech people!! Stop Crying about it

  • Di

I felt the VMAs was forgettable. With the exception of Christina, Lil Wayne and Rhiana, everything else I can’t really remember. I was worried this year’s VMAs was going to turn into the Britney Spears show and I was partly correct. After the second award, I knew they were going to give her Video of the Year even though “Piece of Me” was probably one of her weakest video.
Question: where are all the big stars? Tokio Hotel? Paramore? The stage was definitely too small but the outdoor venue was kind of cool. I don’t know what MTV can do; they can’t rely on Britney to get ratings every year. Britney supposedly “opening” the show was misleading. All she did was look pretty and say a few lines. I would not say Brit is back yet until she gives a killer performance.

  • Lisa

Brand was refreshing as hell, which is more than I can say about the music being honored at tonight’s festivities.

  • Alleykat

The beauty of our country is that we CAN make fun of our government without being beheaded or anything.
Politics aside…hello Slipnot and McLovin! So hysterical…the show was precious for that moment alone…and if you didn’t get the humor, go watch Superbad right now!…but not if Brand offended you with the sex stuff because its more of the same.
Also, I like that Jordin stands up for what she believes (this is a great American trait) but her lack of tolerance and dirty-name calling was shocking, considering her platform. She probably didn’t mean to alienate the millions of her fans not practicing absinence, but shows that her opinions are as one-sided as Brand’s

  • Mary

I didn’t really care for the political stance simply because it was the VMA’s and that’s not what you watch to hear about. And because those were the best jokes he had all night. It’s like the only material he had were the Jonas Brothers. He had so many easy targets! Good god Lindsay Lohan was there and he didn’t even try that one!
I agree the venue was crappy and the audience seemed to not care which only made Brand look worse. So not so sure if it was his fault or the lack of audience involvement in the whole show
Totally forgettable minus the mini Britney comeback

  • Tony

MTV was really on Britneys Sack this year, Maybee cuz they felt sorry of her collapse last year, but she didnt Deserve 3 awards!! Those nominations were so Set-up for her!

  • Danielle

The music performances were fantastic. I was glad to see Britney win because I think she needed it at this point. Why did they have Russell Brand as the host? Didn’t anyone check him out first? He was a total agenda driven bore. He made disgusting remarks about the Jonas Bros. that were totally uncalled for and then went on to insult our Prestdent. Perhaps he has had trouble losing his own virginity and therefor is now obsessed about it. Imagine the outrage if one of our “stars” acted this way in the UK. Russell Brand is a low rent talent that will soon be forgotten. The awards would have been so much better without him.

  • Mary

Oh and I forgot this too…
They shouldn’t have hyped it up about Britney because he just accepting awards was disappointing. Especially since she accepted three awards for what I would call one of her worst videos. I’m shocked she hasn’t won before because she has had some killer videos. So I’ll let it slide about her winning for a bad video. I’ll consider it a make up

  • Anonymous

so basically anyone who doesn’t wear a promise ring is a slut? good one, jordin sparks. so stupid that russell had to apologize for that.

  • Brittany

I am not a Jonas Brothers fan, but I did find all of Brand’s “jokes” to be offensive. The main audience consists of teenagers. The last thing they need to hear at a time when teenage pregnancy is at an all-time high is someone making fun of abstinence.
I also think he overstepped the Bush/Obama comments, but I will leave it at that.

  • Paloma

Russell Brand save the show. He was funny and saved the confuse guest .. I mean come on how hard can it be to read … hhhmmm never mind.

  • Eh

The show sucked. Russel wasnt funny. The Paramount lot wasnt used to its potential. Britney sucked. Jonas sucked. Pink sucked. The only memorable part was Kanye’s new single

  • Michelle

Tony – I agree with you… what’s up with giving Ms. Psycho Spears 3 awards!!! With some amazing artists out there – she snags three awards? First MTV stops showing videos, then the awards show turns into a sham – why watch anymore? Disgusting! To top it all off, they award bad behavior and something totally created in a studio – an award? Guess you don’t need talent anymore!

  • Anonymous

Danielle .. Russell Brand did not have trouble losing his V …. after all he is a sex addict recover ….
