You know what’s so special about this, the first poster for Kevin Smith’s new flick, Zack and Miri Make a Porno (due out October 31st)? It’s not that the one-sheet drops just before the movie’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival (which it does), or that Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks look so surprised, or that the chocolate-mint color scheme is making me a little hungry for Friendly’s. No, it’s that you’ll only see this poster in Canada.
Even after winning an appeal to overturn Porno’s NC-17 rating, Smith says the MPAA won’t give their blessing to the image shown here—which is eyes-only for our neighbors to the north. "When you’ve got the word ‘porno’ in the title, naturally, the marketing materials are gonna be scrutinized more closely by the MPAA," says the director. "I understand they’ve got a job to do, but c’mon…this image isn’t that dirty; they’re both fully clad."
We can just add this to the long list of things we have Canada to thank for, like William Shatner, Michael J. Fox, and the fittingly monikered Peter North. "I’ve always loved Canada and Canadians for giving us hockey," says Smith. "Now, I love ‘em just a little bit more. For allowing tufts of hair."

I can’t say that I love the poster, but it’s not that bad. Honestly, I’m more offended by poster for “horror” (torture porn) films like Saw & Hostel.
Seriously? The MPAA is such a joke sometimes…
Wow. Because the word “Porno” is in the title it’s banned, but the MPAA doesn’t mind images of violence, murder, blood or horror. Ridiculous.
The poster is banned because you see the top of their heads at the others pelvic area. Think about it.
I never understood people’s lines with violence vs. sex. Saw can have broken teeth, and real blood on it but normal sexual activity is banned?
wasnt there a poster just like that for that jessica alba and dane cook movie ?
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm530289408/tt0452625
I find it amusing that Americans are so goofy about sex. Here in Canada we get the Tudors uncut at 9pm on the CBC.
I find Seth Rogen unbearable! I wish he completely disappeared. Thoroughly and utterly unbearable!
The WORLD needs MORE sex-and NO Dane
COOK.
Don’t you wish they made a retroactive
birth control pill?
Nick, it’s not like it’s even actually showing sexual activity…it’s just suggesting it. The MPAA is definitely screwed up.
We’re violent psychopaths down here in the good ol’ US of A, but at least we’re not fornicating perverts! Oh, wait . . .
I saw the trailer for this and it is the most unfunny thing I’ve seen all year. Kevin Smith has no talent.
So would the same poster be banned in the U.S. if the title of the movie was changed to “Zack and Miri get a piggy-back ride” ?
Nobody would have cared about this poster. By banning it, they’ve assured it gets a featured spot on movie websites everywhere, and an extra-long look by everyone who will now be curious to see why it’s banned in the USA (evidently the first amendment can s*ck the MPAA’s b*lls). You’d think these nutty right-wingers who want to ban everything that their prudish mini-brains can’t process would have learned a lesson from the record stickering fiasco in the 80s (remember they’d put that “profanity” label on the record that guaranteed the artist sells a million extra copies… so much so that artist started going out of their way to make sure they got stickered?). Oh well, just goes to prove what i’ve always said, conservatives are mentally retarted.
I wish I still had it (I’d kept it in my office cube for years), but several years ago, the Chicago Tribune put on the cover of its Sunday magazine a game picture of Dick Butkus with the head of a Packer player in a very similar position.
@ go MPAA!!!
I love it when people attack others’ intelligence, and then misspell “retarded”. It’s right up there with “Your an idiot!”, hahaha.
Hey Lucy, here in the U.S. we can schedule a medical procedure the exact day we need it. Keep the Tudors on the CBC, and I’ll take not having to wait 9 months to schedule a biopsy.
Uh, no, The Tudors is NOT uncensored on CBC at 9pm.
They’ve made cuts to help reach a more mainstream audience.
I believe the reruns on CBC-owned Bold (a digital channel) are uncut, though.
A great movie poster. After seeing the trailer, I know that this movie is going to be classic. Looks like a laugh a minute and its 3 short months away. Looking forward to it.
OMG whats the MPAA thinking? every one knows that Seth Rogen is to ulgy to be in a real porno, maybe thay are just trying to help out with ticket sales- Keven Smith should thank them!!!.
Am I the only one who thinks this poster is not very good? The idea is okay, but the execution sucks.
I hope the non-banned poster is more clever.
And that’s why Canada rules! It’s basically the US with minus the conservativism.
The MPAA needs to lighten up a little—or maybe they just need to get out a little more…
Forget the poster. I agree with Delon; I’ve had enough of Seth Rogen’s one trick characterization. When will the whole “how cool is the slacker dude” trend come to an end?
“The idea is okay, but the execution sucks.”
Now THAT’s funny.
That poster is mild in every way. Have you see n the beer commercial that is going around the net. That has truely 10,000 percent more porn in its attributes than this poster. Not to mention that the movie doesn’t look like anything I ever plan to see. There are so many good movies hitting the big screen in the next month or two. This one will be on DVD in 4 months.
I love rogen, but seeing him in any romance part, much less a porn, almost makes me throw up in my mouth, please god, from one of his biggest fans, no more romance! spare me!
I’m with Raven_Moon on this one. Horror movie posters are far more offensive. I had to stop going to public places with my kids while the advertising for One Missed Call was out. When my oldest boy saw it he immediately started crying and it gave him nightmares for several more nights. Is anyone at the MPAA currently parents of YOUNG children? The MPAA has its role – it just doesn’t play it very well – at all.
Rebekah, I wouldn’t be too proud of Canada. We’re one step removed from Bush cronyism with a conservative majority government just around the corner. And “to Lucy”, while our health care system is not perfect and under attack, it remains accessible to all citizens and not just the rich.
