Déjà vu: Last night's 'Gossip Girl' and 'The O.C.'

The_oc_gossip_girlLast night’s season premiere of Gossip Girl (read Tim Stack’s recap here) scored its best-ever total viewers (3.4 million, per the CW) since the 2007 series premiere. But here’s what’s really important: If you’re not tuning in but you ever enjoyed The O.C., just start watching Gossip Girl already because it’s turning into the same show. Not that I’m complaining! I loved how Blair and Serena’s bitchy summer’s-end chit chat (pictured, bottom) was so blatantly a carbon copy of The O.C.’s season 2 and season 3 (pictured, top) openers. Plus, that deceptively "boring," "Lord" guy Blair’s dragging around the Hamptons is totally Summer’s post-summer fling Zach from The O.C.’s season 2. They’re just using them to make Chuck/Seth jealous!

WHATEVER. I wish Julie Cooper would come back already. Then this show would really rule.

Another similarity~ Seth/Dan all of the sudden got hot!

I don’t watch the show that often but caught the premiere last night. The similarities to OC are striking. Using same subplots but renaming the characters and making slight changes. The fact they married off Serena’s mother to Chuck’s father. I wish sometimes he would use new subplots in Gossip Girl. And not redo OC with better clothes on the East Coast.

I totally missed it (after realizing that my new cable doesn’t carry CW). Does anyone know if it’s available online?

Such an excellent episode. I’ve posted a ton of “Gossip Girl” MP3s (including several from this episode) here.

Annie, you do know that Stephanie Savage, Gossip Girl’s showrunner, also ran The O.C. with Josh Schwartz, right? :)

  • Chris G

I’m totally with you. This show totally needs JuJu!

  • jacey

Haha, very true. But hey, Josh Shwartz is the producer of Gossip Girl, and he did create the OC.. and c’mon there are so many more similarities between these two shows then just this scene. But hey, lets just hope gossip girls first season wasn’t it’s only best like with The OC… that crap tanked right after season one.
And also… Leighton, and Ms. Rachel Bilson…. totally the same chic!!!! I guess Josh is just gonna stick with what he knows best.

In the book Nothing Can Keep Us Together, Lord Marcus is supposed to come into blairs life so i don’t think it was copying the O.C. Plus they have the same producer so its to be kinda likely to be the same.

Wow!! I kept thinking the same thing all night! Way better clothes but same scenes! I’d like to see Summer, Blair and Jenny and Seth, Chuck and Ryan. The rest of the kids on both shows can meet in 90210 for all I care. As for the parents, I’ll take all of The OC bunch and move em East!

  • kiss of death

Haven’t you heard? Melinda Clark for Misty Bass! Sure, she may be dead, but flashbacks! Only MC/JC could raise CHUCK BASS.
And I’m so happy we finally got over 3 million.

  • Ryan

Schwartz needs to bring the beloved b*tch dive JuJu- Julie Cooper over ASAP!!! Melinda Clarke rules!!

  • Kristin

Well I must say that Dan Humphrey is no Ryan Atwood, but I appreciate the attempt. I would be more than happy for Gossip Girl to turn into the OC… I miss that show!!

  • RayT

This makes me nostalgic for the old days of Annie’s “O.C.” recaps. I’ll never forget Lindsbree, Yard Guy and Yellow Bear. (In Edith Bunker voice): Thooooose were the daaaaaaaays!!

  • Hamburger Royal

RayT, I noticed the simialrities and I have been missing Annie’s recaps since forever. I just hope Gossip Girl will soon also feature its signature gizmo. I don’t think that Chuck’s clothes or That Scarf match up to the mighty bagle slicer. Going for OMFG, I wonder what a shared episode akin to all those CSI Miami-New York mashups would be…

  • Maria

Haha and both of the season 1 finales end with Serena/Marissa’s mom’s wedding and a sad dance with their boyfriend Dan/Ryan… Plus Blair=Summer, Dan+Seth, Ryan=Nate, and Chuck= Well… he’s just Chuck Bass. But he’s closest to Luke from season 1/2.

  • Nix

I’d love to see Julie Cooper move to Manhattan.
Actually, now that it’s on topic, I want to say something I thought during the pilot way back when: Dan+Serena = SANDY/KIRSTEN. eh? eh?

  • amira from indonesia

from season 1 theres many similarities between gossip girl and the oc, like in the finale, the julie/lily wedding, and last dance of marissa/serena with their bf’s. and now the opening, with summer/seth the same with chuck/blair AND serena has a lifeguard, marissa with yard guy . lol
i simply miss THE OC so bad!!

  • jaime

The OC will forever be my favorite TEEN drama show. . .seriously I LOVE IT!
I missed the whole 1st season of GG however i decided to give the show a chance so i set my dvr to rec it. . .and well its alright…ill be watching it now and giving it a chance! I still miss Summer and Seth and Ryan and Taylor. . .awww. I get mad every time i see a OTH promo cus i think how the hell did that show survive and not The OC….UGH UGH UGH!

  • Aaron

    Julie Cooper for life!

  • drake

i agree with jaime why did OTH SURVIVED??
the oc has much better ratings than OTH,
i realized that josh schwartz what to go out with a bang (high ratings). THE OC FOREVERRRR

  • jaunted jones

It may have been the setting to one of her nightmares about Serena replacing her in Mom’s affections, but a trip to Henri Bendel to pick up a few things is always a dream–particularly when a private concierge is at your beck and call and a tray of treats from Alison Nelson’s Chocolate Bar (on the third floor) awaits your visit. (But she may have to stop shopping there now that “Gossip Girl” has caused a sales spike!)

  • monica

your right. Duchess Beaton could never beat out Julie Cooper. They need someone as ruthless as her.
