I had a three-hour train ride yesterday to contemplate this: I actually enjoy Journey’s "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart") more than "Don’t Stop Believin’" — am I the only one?

I couldn’t agree more. I shameless admit to rocking out to Seperate Ways during my commute
You’re not alone. Separate Ways almost induces a fist pump. Can’t really say that about Don’t Stop Believin’.
I much prefer “any way you want it” myself
Yep. I’m with you – “Separate Ways” is just more fun than “Don’t Stop Believin” and really, I prefer SW.
Oh Separate Ways has ALWAYS been my favorite Journey song. When I think of Journey, thats the song I think of. Because it is awesome.
“Don’t Stop” gets the sorority girls going at the bar if you play it on the jukebox. “Separate Ways” is by far the better choice for traveling music.
C’mon. You mean you don’t get chills as the last verse of “Don’t Stop” kicks in? And “Anyway You Want It” is a close second.
Ah, good memories. I swear I was at that SW concert. Actually I’d have a hard time picking from either choice. I miss these guys!
I totally agree. ‘Seperate Ways’ is way, way better than ‘Don’t Stop’. Way, way, way better. And now that David Chase has forever attached ‘Don’t Stop’ to that god-awful rip-off of a creative abortion of a Sopranos finale… i actually hate that song.
Nope ur not the only one. I love Seperate Ways much more than the other.
I like “Separate Ways” better as well. Especially after that scene in “Monster”.
“Wheel in the Sky” anyone?
I could’nt agree more ! Separate Ways is better (for me anyways) and another one that is my Fav is Stone In Love ! I am a huge Journey fan and refuse to listen to their new album with their “new frontman” ugh! as if !! Steve Perry cannot be replaced .
I’d like to like Separate Ways more but I hated the video
So I’m Don’t Stop Believin’ girl.
Lovin’, touchin’, squeezin’?!? Does anyone know the total number of na-na’s they sing??
I also love the Party’s Over
Actually, as campy as “Two of a Kind” was, “Ask the Lonely” was a phenomenal song. To me, that’s the textbook Journey song.
Totally agree. Love both, but Separate Ways is waaaay better to me.
“Don’t Stop Believin’” is great, but getting overused. “Separate Ways” is underrated IMHO. That intro amkes me want to engage in some Wayne-and-Garth-style headbanging every time, no matter where I am. I also love the Simpsons episode in which it is featured (where Homer imagines being his own next-door neighbor). However, I do love Peter Griffin & Co.’s rendition of “DSB” on Family Guy.
DSB has a special place in my heart from when I first heard it. SW does too to a lesser degree. But I have to toss in a second vote for Wheel in the Sky and a single vote for Ask the Lonely. My ipod is chock full of Journey.
Oh, it’s all about the intro. Separate Ways kicks so much bootay it makes Don’t Stop Believing feel like a children’s song.
Nope
You are dead right – Separate Ways is the best Journey song. The bass line, that awesome drum fill in the center, great lyrics. Followed closely by Stone in Love. Leave the overwrought Don’t Stop Believing to the Sopranos.
JOURNEY has been one of my favorite bands since I was in high school in the ’80’s. I even enjoyed the post-Perry music that frontman Steve Augeri provided for a time. But to really know the band for everything they were, check out the ’70’s albums that featured Gregg Rollie as lead vocalist.
Eric, since you are the Journey expert, help me out with something. Is that Greg dueting with Steve on “Just the Same Way”? I don’t think I ever knew for sure…
And “Feelin’ that Way” for that matter?
Fletch, you bet! Two very, very underated Journey songs and also two of my favorites! If you listen to the very first three Journey albums (Journey, Next and Look Into the Future), they all feature Gregg Rollie exclusively on lead vocals. Even the band’s sound was different before Steve Perry; more like progressive metal. It’s awesome!
By the way, for those of you who are fans of early SANTANA hits like “Evil Ways”, “Black Magic Woman”, “Hope You’re Feeling Better” and “Everybody’s Everything”…that’s Gregg Rollie on lead vocals, NOT Carlos Santana.
But it IS Joe Walsh singing on Santana’s “I’m Winning”, right?
You’re absolutely right. And you didn’t even post the music video for Separate Ways, which makes it even that much sweeter than Don’t Stop Believing
I love “Don’t stop believin’”
But Seperate Ways has a special spot in my heart. a) the utter cheesefest that is the video. WHy are they on the dock? Why the air keyboards? The too-intense singing. All greatness
b)My highschool boyfriend featured SW on the mixtape he taped to my garage door after we broke up – to remind me that true love wouldn’t desert me.
That is 80s awesomeness right there.
I just love that Journey hasn’t been forgotten…they were my fave band in High School and my fave song is “Lights”…
No way. “Don’t Stop (pause) Believin’” is the best Journey song. Separate Ways is still awesome, but doesn’t quite do the same for me.
