Well, PopWatchers, the D-List train has finally reached the depot, and boy, it’s been a crazy ride this season, no? From Down Under hijinks with Lance Bass to the Kathy Griffin Leadership Academy to Segway polo with billionaire Apple geniuses, it seems Kath and Team Griffin have seen and done almost everything. All the more reason for Ms. Griffin to give a little something back, which she did in this funny and poignant season finale.
Kathy and Co. headed to Washington, D.C. to visit the recuperating soldiers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Kathy was noticeably moved as she met with the patients, and for good reason. No matter what you think about the war, it’s hard to ignore the sacrifices these young (and I mean young, some were only 18) kids have made for our country. Many of them were missing one or more limbs. When Kathy finally choked up at the end, I did too. But in normal Kathy fashion, the feisty lady added her own brand of levity to the occasion.
One of her first stops was Fisher House, where rehabilitating soldiers and their families live. Kath was treated to a MTV Cribs-style tour of one of the rooms courtesy of soldier wife Susan. Noticing that Susan leaves cute little notes for her hubby on the bathroom mirror, Kathy penned her own heartfelt missive for the vet: "You can just suck it." (Which became even funnier when she actually met him in the rehab center a little bit later.)
My favorite part of the episode though was her interaction with "F— me I’m Irish" Nick (pictured). That kid was a complete hoot. When he decided to go to Kathy’s comedy show just so Kath would hit on him because "I need a little lovin’,” my heart melted just a bit.
Speaking of the comedy show, poor Kathy was anxious all day aboutit, because as she pointed out, straight men are not really herdemographic. So she scoured the campus for women and gays (with thetongue-in-cheek promise of not asking or telling) to invite to theshow. Ms. Griffin was right to be a wee nervous. Not only were there fourchaplains in the audience but a few ankle biters as well. No suck itJesus jokes tonight! And if that weren’t bad enough, her usualrepertoire of Britney jokes were bombing, miserably. It looked asthough Kathy was about to go AWOL when out of nowhere her white knightcame rolling in on his silver steed of a wheelchair. Kathy refocusedher act on Nick and all of the dark and twisty insider rehab jokes(Coors from a prosthetic leg? Hilarious!). In the end, Kathy was, ofcourse, a huge hit. And so was her Emmy, which she brought along forphoto ops.
As Kathy and Team Griffin got ready to depart the Center, CasanovaNick adoringly bid farewell: "I’m going to miss those breasts." Andreally, won’t we all?
So Popwatchers, what was your favorite moment this season? Are youalready itching for season 5? What would you like to see Kathy and TeamGriffin do next season? Sky dive with Chance and Pom Pom? Take Maggieto a burlesque show? Please spill.

Went to see Kathy at Massey Hall last Fri in T.O – she was ON!
She should come to Toronto for our Pride next year that would be a hoot.
This is one of the few shows where I’m actually sad when it ends. So Bravo, more Mrs. Kathy specials while we wait for next season, okay?
I am so freakin proud of this show.. I love it that Kathy has been the only one to show some sense of just being normal cool and emotional.. Not like the other serious crap that just makes you hate the war and emotionaly breaks you down because of the the life these young men and women will now have to live.
Thank You Kathy you really made my day.
This episode was so touching. The scenes with Nick were great. Hopefully Kathy can keep in touch with him. I have to say I loved it this season when she was in Mexico seeing her relationship with young Cristian.
Can we please, like, have Kathy on TV ALL the time? 52 weeks a year? Please? Please?
Owen, I agree….her demographic covers everyone whether she knows it or not – last night’s show was great and it made me cry – we need more reminders of just what these kids give up when the go into a war.
She is just terrific and heck I wouldn’t mind a FMII tatoo on my chest!
ok so every year in Chicago memorial day weekend there a group that comes to Chicago called International Mr Leather. She should go to that sometime
I know this is a mini review in Popwatch, but the others had direct links fron the TV reviews section and this one required lots of hunting. What gives? PS: she deserves another Emmy just on this episode alone!
Kathy, You are one of the best! Have tons of offspring and bring them all to Iowa to teacher us that life doesn’t have to be serious all the time!
Kathy should hook up with Jeff Lewis and have her house redone, I’d love to see the cat fights
This should definitely be the episode that she submits for Emmy consideration. It was truly terrific.
LOVE Kathy’s show!!! I’m a Kathleen also. If she wants great gays, she should come up to Sonoma County CA. They could show her a good time.
Kathy is one of the hardest working people out there and is deserving of everything she gets. I really admire her willingness to try just about anything and her honesty when it doesn’t always go the way she planned. She has a great staff who you can tell love their job. I loved Kathy’s last episode and I look forward to watching next season.
Sigh, its over already. Kathy is amazing and should have her show on for atleast 7 more episodes. Can’t wait to get this on DVD!
I had no clue it was the last episode when I was watching it, how sad it’s over all ready. I adore Kathy and her seasons need to be way longer, 15 episodes at least. Wake up Bravo!!!!!
P.S. She so deserves another Emmy for this one show alone.
Huh. Do you not get that this is “serious crap”. It’s great that the guys can laugh at their predicament, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t serious. An 18 year old boy missing 2 limbs is serious!!!!!!
So, I feel like I am the only one in my entire family that thinks this lady should be a bigger star. She’s hillarious! (and slightly appropriate, re: remember the kathy/anderson cooper episode? she toned it down! kind…of?)
I am sad she’s not dating Woz anymore. He was like a big ewok teddy bear man.
Anyways, I totally agree. This episode was poignant, funny, and really showed the guys fighting the war are people, too. And they can stick beer in their leg and pass it around. Best. Drinking. Game. Ever.
I died when I realized I missed this episode. But now I’m in heaven because Bravo will repeat it tomorrow afternoon! Yeah!!!
How about Kathy internet dating? Or taking her mom to wine country to get her to stop drinking box wine??
This was a very nice season finale, but why the season is so short? More Kathy please!
Great episode and season. I also got teary eyed in this one. Hope Kathy and the awesome team Griffin(along with Maggie) will be back next season. Will miss my weekly Kathy fix!
I love that Kathy makes no appologies for who she is. I love that behind that big facade of sarcasam and vanity lies a person that cares for others. She may crack a lot of jokes along the way, but she honestly loves everyone that comes in and out of her life. More Kathy next season!
It was important to see all those military folk doing their best to recover. Kathy is so talented, she should be able to adjust her set to her audience. Obviously the guys don’t want twisted sex humor and Britney jokes when their wives and kids and moms are there with them. I don’t understand how Kathy couldn’t clock that immidiately and just go for the everyday things they deal with as the joke and as a way to release their frustration. No one cared about her effing Emmy, they just wanted a pic with her. She’s going to wear the gold off that thing…
I loved this season finale episode. And, I hope this particular show gets more celebrities to visit the Walter Reed center, to cheer up the people there, as well as motivate regular folk to do something, too. Kathy Griffin shamed me, in a good way, to make me realize that there are many US families suffering on so many levels, after choosing to serve in our military. I hate the war but not the soldiers.
I love this show b/c she’s as real as a celebrity can get. She can hang at the Emmys (and possibly win another one) and then hang with the recovering soldiers at Walter Reed and she’s the same person treating everyone with respect. Well, unless you’re an A lister — then you are fodder for her act! I too would like to see Jeff Lewis remodel her home — that would be awesome and he wants to do it! Can’t wait for next season!!
I agree with everyone else: the season is way too short. Kathy is so refreshing, so genuine. I don’t buy the heartless act, either. Anyone who loves dogs can’t be uncaring.
As for my favorite episode, it would have to be the Bear Convention show, especially when she comforted the overheated bear-costume guy.
“Despite the glitz and glamour at events such as this, behind the scenes, there are heartbreaking casulties.”
