Women’s advice site The Frisky and men’s advice site Asylum have companion lists naming the best mood-setting songs (and I think you know what mood we’re talking about). Biggie Smalls and the Rolling Stones (pictured) each make one list, but surprisingly, there’s no overlap on either site. Also, no Marvin Gaye and no Barry White. I don’t know how anyone can take seriously a list of music for gettin’ it on that doesn’t contain "Let’s Get It On."
We can do better, can’t we, P-Dubs? Please name your favorite mood-music tune below (include a link to its video, if you know the URL) and explain your choice. If we get enough good suggestions, we’ll make a video playlist.

I might be the only person, but Closer by Nine Inch Nails is the rawest, sexiest song I’ve ever had the pleasure to listen to (pun intended? Maybe not?) Bringing someone “Closer to God”? against the hard beats of the song? Brilliant, not to mention, HOT.
“When Doves Cry” by Prince. Those first few words… “dig if you will the picture, of you and I engaged in a kiss” – they get my motor runnin’.
I’m strange. This is known. But the entire disc of Peter Gabriel’s Passion. AKA the soundtrack for The Passion of the Christ. Hot, sticky world beats that change the tempo at JUST the right moment. It’s been a go-to disc for over a decade.
“Everybody here wants you” – Jeff Buckley
Hands down, Closer by Nine Inch Nails
Honorable mentions for Need You Tonight by INXS and Insatiable by Darren Hayes
How does it feel by D’Angelo.
But, I’ve got to second Closer by NIN. Raw is the best word to describe it!
Feeling Love – Paula Cole
Love Song – 311
Eastern Glow – The Album Leaf
Fade Into You – Mazzy Star
The Distance – Cake
I know “Let’s Get It On” is the go-to Marvin Gaye song when a topic like this comes up (for good and obvious reasons), but I actually prefer “Sexual Healing.”
Erm, Paranoid Android and Planet Telex by Radiohead totally does it for me. Weird, perhaps.
“A Question of Lust” by Depeche Mode or “Love Gun” by KISS…depending on what type of action I’m hoping to get.
Secret by Maroon 5
“Principles of Lust” by Enigma.
Jackyl’s Down on Me. STP’s, Sex Type Thing. I have issues.
I don’t know why, and this song is probably older than me, but there is something about “Son of a Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield that gets my motor running.
Led Zeppelin II
“This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell. HOT!! And of course, I have to agree with NIN’s “Closer” as well as Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On”. They are all great songs to get you in the mood. And I can’t believe I’m going to admit this, but “Breathe On Me” by Britney Spears could work too.
“Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak. (Or maybe it’s just Chris Isaak that gets me in the mood.)
Anything by Maxwell, but especially Fortunate, or Lifetime. That man is hotttt.
Secret Garden by Quincy Jones….classic baby makin’ music. Fellas, no woman can resist a seduction.
For morning nooky – Sunday Morning by Maroon 5.
Try Amos Lee’s Won’t Let Me Go – for an angsty spin on gettin’ down.
And if he/she still doesn’t get it – Do Me Baby by Prince (Melissa Morgan also does a great version) should clear things up.
Crazy on You–Heart (“it’s my love/the pleasure’s mine” gets me every time)
Imaginary Love–Rufus Wainwright
Swimming Pool–Freezepop (ethereal beats plus the ending repeat of “everything is perfect now” equals one of the most sensual songs I’ve ever heard)
Black Velvet-Alanna Myles
Nights in White satin- Moody Blues
Magic Man- Heart
‘These arms of mine’-Otis Redding
But NOTHING beats ‘One on One’ by my heroes Hall and Oates
I have to emphatically SECOND Peter Gabriel’s Passion CD and urge all of you to get it for your next session.
Bryan Ferry is always good as is Massive Attack.
For Closer fans, I recommend hunting down the “Up Close and Sexual” mash-up by Mixomatosis. It’s NIN and Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye. Awesomeness.
Louis Armstrong does a fantastic version of “Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love)” that really gets me going. Also, almost anything done by Robbie Williams, but I think that has more to do with the singer than with the songs themselves.
Kelly, I agree with “Breathe On Me”, also like NIN’s “Closer”, though I didn’t think I would at first…I like Toni Braxton’s “You’re Making Me High,” and Exile’s “Kiss You All Over.” They state it plainly….
The Sensual Woman by the Herbalizer. Talk about hot!
I think Something by the Beatles is the sexiest song ever. (But can you ever really beat Make It With You by Bread?)
Overlap by Ani DiFranco
If You Want Me – Swell Season
Breathe Me – Sia
and call me conceited, but The Way You Look Tonight done by Old Blue Eyes himself.
Anything and I mean anything by Barry White. The man has it going one with that deep, sexy, velvety voice. Swoon. A close second is Riveria Paradise by Stevie Ray Vaughn. An incredible instrumental guitar performance.
as mentioned: Closer by Nine Inch Nails
and also
Inertia Creeps by Massive Attack
(some lyrics: “Recollect me darling raise me to your lips/2 undernourished egos 4 rotating hips”)
I’m adding to the chorus of “Closer” fans. Pretty much any NIN song does it for me. Trent Rezner’s voice is the sexiest thing I’ve ever heard. He could sing the alphabet and it would still make me want to jump the first person I see.
