Coke Zero ads: Genius or just plain freaky?

Generally speaking, the weirder the advertisement, the more I’m hooked: I want to be on the VW bug talk show, and Bruce Campbell makes me want to buy nothing but Old Spice. But Coke Zero might be pushing it with their latest ad campaign, in which anthropomorphic tongues and an eye with chicken feet argue over whether a large glass bottle contains Coke or Coke Zero. The series of ads (three are embedded below), though they look as if they were directed by Salvador Dali, are easy enough to understand: The eye sees a Coke Zero label, but the tongues taste regular Coke. And did I mention the accents? The eye is French, while the tongues sound like they’re doing bad impressions ofDick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. (And last night, I saw another version in which the tongues had developed a Spanish inflection, andthe eye had a more generic Euro-accent. Whaaa?)

Here’s my question for you: In the DVR era, where you can blissfully fast-forward through commercial breaks, is a weird and wild ad like Coke Zero’s enough to make you hit rewind? And do those fleshy tongues and that squishy eyeball make you want to take a swig of Coke Zero, or simply say "gulp"?

Definitely will not make me rewind my DVR.
BUT, have you tried Zero? It’s really good. Got my husband to switch to diet.

Saw it at the movies a couple weeks ago, and my sister and I (as well as most of everyone in the theater) were seriously freaked! And I love Coke! This is just too much…

I’m not a DVR’er, so I just mute commercials when they come on. Lately I have been un-muting for True North because everytime they say “extraordinary nut snack” it makes me giggle like a 10 yr old. But the most recent commercial I saw lacked the word “nut.” So sad.

I personally like the old spice commercials with NPH and the one with the two in one centaur.

  • Alyssa

Ok, I like these commercials. They’re weird enough to grab my attention…and, well, keep it.

I actually like the commercial; it’s wierd enough to be memorable. The voice-over guy at the end has got to go, though……

It’s a little creepy – hope it lasts as long as the Quizno’s spongemonkey commercials. Which wasn’t very long.

  • andrew

    those Quizno’s commercials were amazing!

  • Q

No, those Quizno’s commercials were disgusting. They looked like dead rats!
The new Coke Zero ads are better than the last campagin where two guys kept trying to convince lawyers they had a case against Coke. THOSE were just stupid.

I’m perplexed by why there are two tongues but only one eyeball. Wow, I’m really over thinking this commercial.

  • donner

i’ve never seen these ads before…very weird, but I cannot look away…the tongues look a bit like a piece of the male anatomy…I do like the brain in the first ad, he skools the other two…’I'm gonna make you eat dirt”…briliant…

these are the most disgusting/disturbing commercials ever! I couldn’t believe that they actually made 2 of them! EWWWWWWW

  • Raven_Moon

I hate those commericals! They make me want to not drink Coke Zero. (Not that I would anyway.)

  • TsuKata

I love that commercial. It cracks me up when the eye gets all offended that they’re doubting him.

  • gfunkgangsta

this is so weird! where i live, the eyeball has this weird mad scientist accent and the tounges have a southern thing going on.
could there be dozens of regionally specific coke/eyeball/tongue ads?

  • Andrea

I’ve seen several of these ads on TV before (there’s even one with a brain that’s freakier!) and I adore them…it’s a nice change from the boring soda commercials we normally see, and it definitely caught my attention when I saw it the first time. I can understand how it would creep people out but come on, it’s so creative! Way to go, Coke!

  • Rob Grizzly

I hate this commercial. This would make me never buy the product.
    gross

  • Tarjay

HILARIOUS! I like them very much. I was always wondering why Coke didn’t do a better advertising campaign for Coke Zero when it first came out. It tastes a heck of a lot more like Coke than Diet Coke does. These commercials finally capture that concept.

  • Saul

I like these ads, and generally I don’t like advertising. The agency deserves to be called “creative” for this one – and IMO they most often use that word unjustifiably. This one is just weird enough, and thus memorable. That said, I don’t like cola products in general, and I’m not a terribly good consumer. Ads that don’t give me meaningful information about the product or service don’t go far, here.

brilliant and funny–I AM NOT FAT__lol
