Freddie Prinze, Jr., joins WWE: How does this make you feel?

Freddieprinzejr_lMy pal Mandi Bierly thinks it’s great that Freddie Prinze, Jr., has joined World Wrestling Entertainment’s creative team, where he’ll have "a behind-the-scenes role contributing to WWE’s weekly television and pay-per-view programs." And while I don’t begrudge the guy for bringing a regular paycheck to the Prinze-Gellar household — it’s a more respectable/responsible gig than headlining another Scooby Doo sequel, after all — my first reaction to the news was something like, "That ABC sitcom of his was a hot honeyed mess, but this seems like an unusually harsh career trajectory for a one-time viable movie actor."

Now it’s your turn to weigh in: If Freddie’s WWE deal had an accompanying reality show, it would/should be called:

A. Extreme Penance: Thespian Edition
B. I Don’t Know What You Did With Your Career This Summer
C. W.W.Egads

Oh, I can already hear Mandi complaining I didn’t leave an option to point out the awesomeness of this partnership. Fine.

Since I really don’t care about either, I’ll just leave a big ol’ pile of “meh.” for this one.

I’m happy he’s doing something productive, he was making movies at the height of my teenybopper fandom so I want him to be successful.

I Don’t Know What You Did With Your Career This Summer—-CLASSIC!

  • Ed Brown

Still waiting for Chico and the Man, the Second Generation.

  • BrandonK

Aw, that’s sad. I thought he was great in “Head Over Heels” with my favorite underrated actress, Monica Potter.

  • Ceballos

I never ever cared for any of the man’s movie or TV work at all. In fact, some of it was just downright awful (hello, Scooby Doo!)
However, I’ve seen him in interviews, and he seems like a nice guy and he’s decent in small doses. I remember laughing at his Enrique Iglesias impression on SNL in spite of myself and on “Boston Legal” (Donny Crane). Sure, it seems like an outta left field move and a HUGE step down, but I actually think it’s a little cool. The fact that he won’t be inflicting any more of his “acting” on me is also an added bonus.
    Finally, E) Down to YoU(nitards)

  • Jelana

Awww. Don’t be mean. I actually met him (he’s a friend of a friend) — he’s really nice. He’s also hot hot hot in real life. I hope he finds a way to get his career back on track. Maybe a nice indie?

  • Confused

I don’t understand the problem, the man is working in a creative team for a company that produces weekly performances and we say its sad? I say its pretty damn cool and it beats a regular 9to5.

  • taraniso

He looks like Gellar has sucked the life out of him. Tired, worn-down old man.

  • Raven_Moon

My favorite is C)W.W.Egads. Funny stuff. What happened, man? What an odd career move. I’m not a huge fan of his, but I admit that I rather enjoy “Down to You” for some reason.

  • The Burg

the guy is married to SMG
AND working for the WWE creative team?
He is living every geeks dream.
    I bow to his greatness

  • fido

I hope he could bring original storylines to the wwe. I think it’s a pretty cool announcement.

  • Rachel

I love both Freddie & Sarah. I think this is a good move for him and hope he has fun with it.

  • Loop

It certainly couldn’t hure the WWE. Freddie Prinze… not so much.

  • BobbyC

One of the nice things about being a celebrity and being rich is that you can do a lot of things that normal people cannot. From what I’ve read he’s a big fan of wrestling – and now he is (basically) helping develop storylines. Good for him – and having someone from outside of wrestling industry might actually help them develop more credible entertainment. And yes, I am a wrestling fan.

  • Donna

Guess he’s given up on that whole “trying to deny his career is over” phase. SMG must be mortified.

  • coco

Whatever puts food on your table.n Go for it!!!
I’m part of the 0.0000001% that enjoyed Freddie the series, but oh well, I’m Latina so I guess I am biased towards shows with Spanish characters!

  • botsman

your dad would roll over in his grave

  • GeeMoney

Obviously he can’t get any good movie roles anymore….. so, why not?

  • eric v

In the always fun debate, “what is the worst film of all-time,” most votes usually go to Ed Wood’s “Plan 9″, “Battlefield Earth”, “Gigli”, “Heaven’s Gate,” or “Howard the Duck”….
HOWEVER, for my money, the absolute worst movie I have ever ever ever seen– and by a very long mark– is the Freddie Prinze Jr movie “Boys and Girls.” Has anybody seen this piece of crap?
At least some of the movies usually thought of as “worst ever” have a fun, ’so bad it’s good quality.’ Not so this one.
Just an absolute charmless, clueless mind-torturing mess … which is pretty much how I’ve now thought of Prinze Jr himself. I don’t feel good about myself for it, but I’ve developed a pretty irrational disgust for the man as an actor and a human being (ya, I got issues) after seeing a few of his flicks. I probably need to work on that.
But, in any event, it’s good to know we won’t see him working in film for a little while anyway… good times.

  • cajunsblues

He is getting a chance to work with something he has always loved. and well behind the camera for him is better than in front of

  • Rob Grizzly

Sounds fun. I’d like to see Sarah Michelle wrestle some of those ladies

  • Otis

Why the not so subtle swipe at WWE? They produce several weekly TV shows…EVERY week. No re-runs, no summer vacations, no pre-emptions. Is it Masterpiece Theatre? Of course not, but as long as ew is showcasing “The Hills” or the latest “So you think you can knit” reality show, let’s just put down the stone and enjoy our pretty glass house.

  • Flyboy

People think that this is some step down in his career. He’s getting an opportunity to work behind the scenes and help in the creative process of something he’s a big fan of. He’s seen and written scripts before, so that experience, mixed with his love of wrestling, may help improve the product. This blog writer might think that this is some serious step down in his career, but if you ask Freddie, he’ll probably tell you that he’s very happy to be doing it and he chose it, not out of desperation, but because he really wants to be a part of this.
As much as people like to look down their noses at the WWE, it is one of the most successful entertainment companies out there. It produces 5 hours of scripted entertainment, 2 of those hours are live, not taped, and filmed twice a week in front of 10,000 people. The wrestlers are on the road 3-4 days a week, doing a physically demanding job, that takes alot of coordination, strength, endurance. No TV or movie actors go through this.

  • lulabelle

I’m sure he’s a great guy and wonderful husband, but my heart breaks for SMG. *I* would have a hard time holding my head up if my hubby wrote for the WWE, and no one even knows who I am!
However, He *is* a terrible actor and at least this keeps him behind the camera!

Flyboy and Otis hit the nail on the head. Wrestling is not masterpiece theatre, it is not shakespeare,is it legit atheletic competition, but it is a different type of art. The man is living my dream of working behind the scenes and is a die hard fan to boot so that is a plus. Besides he is working behind the scenes and as any wrestling fan on this board knows, at least he will never be WWE Champion.
People need to give wrestling it’s due. If we are gonna call wrestlers fake we might as well call Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt the same.

  • Josh

I just noticed i did not put a no after the atheletic competition part.

  • Chris

i am sorry, you would be embarrassed if your husband worked for the WWE!?!
yeah, i guess with the amount of money the publicly traded company makes in a year… sorry- what does your husband do now? unless its’ astronaut, you are not that cool a wife.

  • Russell

    Lulabelle,
SMG got her start on soap operas. You know soap operas, don’t you? They are heavily produced, scripted dramas featuring showdowns between good and evil. The only difference between her start and where her husband is now?? The time slot. Save your heartbreak and shame for the next celeb caught in a truly embarrassing situation and not one who has decided to work for a living.
