Battle of the Bollywood Routines, Vol. 1 (of 1): Natalie Portman vs. 'SYTYCD' kids

Just because we can, let’s pit two Bollywood-inspired nuggets of American pop culture against each other and watch what happens, like on Bravo. First up, Natalie Portman hams her way through her shaggy boyfriend Devendra Banhart’s Bollywood-inspired music video, "Carmensita."

Check Plus Natalie Portman!
Check Vague attempt at mudras (hand gestures)
Check Minus You can see his "hair down there"

Now, "Heeeeeeeeeeere’s…Katee and Joshua!" (Hey, thanks, Cat!)

Check Plus Muchos mudras
Check Joshua’s khaki-colored open vest is not too flashy
Check Minus This contest is so unfair. Obviously, Katee and Joshua win. It’s not even an appropriate matchup. What, PopWatch, do all the Bollywood sendups, parody or not, look the same to you? IS THAT HOW IT IS HERE?! Real mature.

Right. So…vote!

I can’t watch the video from work, unless I want ew.com banned forever (and I don’t). That said, keep in mind that High School Musical 3 will also feature a Bollywood-type musical number. Let’s have the ultimate smackdown after that baby hits the theaters.

That’s Katee and Joshua (you got it right when referring to his vest, but you called him “Will” in two other spots. Katee didn’t get partnered with Will until last week.
Katee and Joshua’s Bollywood number was extraordinary!!

  • Babs

    Um. That’s Katee and Joshua.

    Thanks for catching the error.

I watched that video with Natalie Portman the other day. It is weird and her boyfreind is disgusting and you can see his pubic hair att he start of the music video, gross

what is up with the bollywood craze these days? Don’t get me wrong, I’m indian and grew up watching this stuff (and attempting to dance to it too!) so I think its awesome, but what has inspired this sudden surge of bollywood-ness?

  • Anjeliki

I’d say Katee and Joshua win for the dancing, but Natalie and Devendra win for the humor. If you can get past the grossness.

  • Tamara

Funny, yeah, I guess. But I still give it to Katee/Joshua for sheer entertainment value as well as dancing. Their routine puts a smile on my face and a bounce in my step every time I see it. I like almost everyone left on this season of SYTYCD (and most of the top 20) but these two are my favorites.

Oh my that video is so, um, intersting! The subtitles are hilarious (what was the part about a grandma and a salad?) Love how Natalie turns into an octopus at the end. Gotta ask, is it normal for Bollywood to show pubic hair??? So nasty. Anyway, to answer the question, Katee and Joshua naturally win for dancing, but for Bollywoodness, it’s Natalie’s creepy boyfriend’s vid.

  • Aaron

But neither beats the Bollywood video for Basement Jaxx’s “Romeo”. Can we throw that into the ring?

  • paige

he needs to take care of that… maybe natalie should buy him a weed wacker… unless she finds that sort of thing sexy– i dont see why we should be subjected to it…

  • LizetM

Joshua and Katee all the way! Aside from being my fav couple (so sad not seeing them dance together anymore!) they did one heck of a job with that routine. It was entertaining and I just have a blast watching it. Puts a smile on mah face. :) … and I just love that song. I can’t understand the lyrics, but that don’t matter!

  • christie

haahahaa….some of these comments are hilarious. I love Natalie, but she’s got to lose the hobo. As far as the Bollywood-ness goes, Devendra needs to focus on trimming that bush instead

It’s really disappointing to see this gross misrepresentation of Indian culture being portrayed as “Bollywood”. This is some hippie bum’s interpretation of the Ramayana, which can be taken as an insult to the Hindu religion. This video is akin to someone making a video mocking Jesus. I find it surprising that there hasn’t been an outrage over this video yet!

    It’s good! rolex watch?
    luxury watch?
