The 'Sex and the City' prop you WILL see in stores

LovelettersofgreatmenWell, it was only a matter of time. One New York minute after word spread that fans of the Sex and the City movie were logging onto Amazon.com in hopes of purchasing Love Letters of Great Men — the fake book highlighted in the film — publisher Pan MacMillan announced that on Aug. 15, they’re planning to release a book with the same title in the U.K., to include "all of the letters referenced in the film."

Now, I have no doubts that Love Letters will sell boatloads of books — He’s Just Not That Into You, for example, became a phenomenon thanks to rabid fans of the show — but considering only a few poems were referenced in the film, I’m not sure how Pan MacMillan plans on filling out the rest of the book (hopefully with pieces from poets more adept than Chris Noth’s Mr. Big). A forward by Evan Handler (hey, he needed something to do while the movie’s writers were busy giving him no lines)? A guide to bad bathroom-related puns by Sarah Jessica Parker? Or a letter to the producers from one angry, poor peacock whose feather was sacrificed in the name of tacky wedding fashion? Personally, I’m a bit SATCed out, and will likely save my money in protest of the fact that my favorite fake prop — buddy bands — still somehow doesn’t exist (not to mention all the brilliant fake products you all expressed your love for in the comment boards — hello The Man Inside Me!).

So, PopWatchers, what, or who, would you like to see in the book? Will you order a copy? Or do you, like me, plan on avoiding it like a tempting buff, naked neighbor in a steamy shower?

the buddy bands episode of saved by the bell was on this morning and i marveled over the brilliant promotional video. classic.

That depends, do I get a tempting buff, naked neighbor in a steamy shower if I order a copy?

i think they waited too long to do this. i was eager to get the book too…back in may! it’s about to be august. maybe they should wait till the dvd comes out and pair them together. however, i agree, if they throw in a few more incentives, i might be interested. maybe like a collection of every romance question carrie has posed in an episode and the answer or solution that each woman would give. like if she had asked, “Is it ok to date younger?” and then each woman states their stance on the subject.

    Urgh, no.
Would it be too much to ask to pad it out with actual love letters from actual great men? History is littered with them!

  • Silv

I agree with Kath – why is it so hard to track down actual love letters from famous men? I read “The Love Letters of Ronald Reagan to Nancy Reagan” a while ago, and it was a touching collection of letters from the days when letter writing was an art. Today they’d probably have to do an internet search for “E-Mails from Famous Men” and I doubt they’d be PG-13, much less “swoonworthy.”

It would be too depressing to read actual love letters, when these days women are expected to swoon when we receive an “I’ll pick up the chinese food tonight” e-mail.

  • Kath

To be fair, not all old-timey love letters were PG-13 either. Ever read James Joyce’s love letters? NC-17, minimum.

They should follow the Title (and the advice of posters below) and actually put the love letters of great men. Then I might get the book – speaking as someone who has never seen a single episode of Sex and the City.

There is a book called PRIVATE LETTERS OF THE WORLD’S GREAT LOVERS, published in 1943. It’s a small book, a fat pamphlet really, with letters by people like Napoleon and Heinrich von Kleist. You can find a copy on any popular used book-search website.
