True or False: 'Mamma Mia!' edition

Swooning over Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia! (read Owen Gleiberman’s C+ review here), my sister said, "When you look that good in linen, you don’t Read the full post.

FALSE!! I love Pierce Brosnan, but he is a terrible singer. Meryl Streep was simply ok and I put up with her, but Brosnan was just plain bad.

Ahh, Richard Gere set a nice precedent for this one, didn’t he. My vote: true to a point. If it’s a real belter’s role, then get a real singer. If it’s more about the character, then a hottie is always a good substitute.

Jelena, please tell me you are not lumping Richard Gere with Pierce Brosnan. Please! Richard Gere was not the strongest singer in Chicago, and he had a funny affected way of singing, but it was WAY WAY BETTER than Pierce Brosnan in Mama Mia. My God just awful. Awful, awful, awful.

Hello, folks, he’s not supposed to be a singer, he’s an ACTOR but for what he did with the role in Mamma Mia, I thought he was terrific(and for someone who’s not supposed to be a singer, I thought he did decent) I think attempting to sing on film when you’re not a singer(and wearing 70′s disco spandex) takes a whole lot of moxie. More Power, Pierce! Loved you.

Not just false, but FALSE! Disregarding the fact this is a movie with no plot and exists for the sole purpose of filling theaters with ABBA music, Pierce Brosnan was the worst thing about this film. In fact, none of the men were anything to write home about. Thanks goodness for Meryl Streep and Christine Baranski.

True. I thought the movie was a blast and Pierce’s warbling worked fine – he only has like 2 numbers.

  • To Crystal

Yeah, but in the stage play his character had MORE than 2 numbers. Hmmmm, why’d they cut them??? Because he brings a lot of pretty, but he brings a lot more pain.

It’s a musical. Please hire actors who can sing.
I’ve always loved, loved, loved Pierce Brosnan (the Thomas Crown Affair is one of my favorite guilty pleasures), and I wanted to like him so much in Mama Mia, but like my 20 year old daughter said, “the movie was on crack” – over the top casting to match its over the top acting style.

That’s almost verbatim what my mother said.
And frankly, I disagree. There are hundreds of attractive Broadway actors who not only would’ve done well, but would really appreciate the work.
They could’ve at least given Pierce Brosnan the male role that DIDN’T have the bulk of the singing!

Who went to Mamma Mia to hear Pierce sing? He is first and foremost eye candy – the singing part was for curiosity’s sake.

  • Annie

Very stange casting. I would not have picking Brosnan for the role. When I saw the movie…everyone in the theatre was laughing when he sung (tried to sing).

  • Coach’s Mistress

Singing BAD, but movie FUN! The bad singing actually made the movie more entertaining IMHO. The only thing the movie needed was even more Colin Firth… I love me some Colin Firth!

I just saw MM yesterday and was astounded by how awful this guy sang! He stopped the movie cold. People at the show – being polite – basically had to hold their laughter. He ruined the movie. SOS, indeed.

I haven’t seen the movie, but I’d have to say “false.” Did you see Everybody Says I Love You? Drew Barrymore had the decency to insist that her singing be over-dubbed, but Julia Roberts did not. A pretty face cannot overcome a nails-on-a-chalkboard voice.

  • Amber

    False! He was so awful!
