Critic David Edelstein made me laugh with this line from his review.
“…and Pierce Brosnan, whose voice in song is the closest a human has come to a water buffalo.”
False. I enjoyed his acting, but he has quite a few numbers and his voice was painful to listen to.
False! People who can’t sing shouldn’t. EVER.
the only thing worse than PB singing is Colin Firth dancing.
TRUE
In normal occasions I would agree, but this is a musical for pete’s sake! Hire singers! (that and his acting wasn’t that good either.
False, but luckily it didn’t ruin the entire movie for me. So alls well that ends well.
I have no doubt your sister said that.
So, so true! Despite the lackluster vocals he completely charmed me.
don’t sign on for an effing musical if you can’t sing. I don’t care if you’re the big G; just DON’T.
Shame on that casting director!
Most definitely true.
The whole movie was really oddly cast, the ages didn’t really match up. But I love all of the actors so I enjoyed it.
I shall reserve official judgment until I actually see the movie – but until then, I offer option C: True, but only if he keeps his shirt on, because I really do not need to ever again see that much chest hair.
This movie was bad. I enjoyed it very much but it was still bad. PB was one of the biggest contributing to the badness, for 2 reasons: 1) He did not seem to realize it was bad, as the other actors did and 2) the aforementioned singing. People were definitely laughing at him rather than with him. All the other older actors were winking at us.
yes he looked hot but when he started singing i felt like running towards the fire exit
I really want to see the movie, because I love the soundtrack; I’ve been listening to and singing the songs for years now. Two of my sisters have seen it on stage and loved it. However, I was disappointed with the casting when they announced it, because the older characters seemed…well, too old. If the movie being cast is a musical, then it should be determined that the actors can actually carry a tune before they’re hired. I’m going for the songs, not the actors, so I don’t care so much who’s playing a role as I do how well they can sing. I’m still going, but I’m hoping that my fondness for the music doesn’t suffer.
False, false, FALSE!!!!!!!!!!
TRUE!!!!! he did a respectible job of singing anyway…plus, the spandex at the end totally made up for any bad singing.
I laughed every time he sang, but he was still good
Makes Gerard Butler in “Phantom of the Opera” sound like Pavarotti.

PB was definitely HOT HOT HOT but his singing was sadly inadequate. There were signs Brosnan’s singing had real potential but there were huge problems with the movie’s production values. Personally, I blame the director and editors. The movie was so poorly dubbed and choreographed, PB might not have been so laughable if the film had been directed by a more seasoned MOVIE (not stage) director. I also agree the casting of older actors was a big problem too. Hard to believe Brosnan and Streep as a couple. But hurray to Hollywood for producing a movie that women (especially older women) want to see.
I saw a clip from the movie this weekend, and not only will I NOT go see this movie, I have a wish that there was any possibility to un-hear terrible signing. My god, who did the casting? Call the firing squad….
True. Yes, it was painful, but it made PB all the more endearing.
I do agree that the ages didn’t match up, but I was so won over by Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried et al that I just suspended my disbelief. Because really, it’s an ABBA musical, not Citizen Kane.
FALSE.
I don’t blame director Phyllida Lloyd — heck, if I were directing my first movie I would hire Chris Evans to sing and dance, even if he bellowed like a walrus (which is what Pierce Brosnan does). So I don;t blame her for hiring some age-appropriate eye candy, but that doesn’t make it pleasant for the audience. Who is 50 and hot and can sing? Anyone have ideas?
Wow Ann! You encapsulated everything I’ve been thinking. LOVE Streep, et al, but they were all just a bit too old. PB’s singing put me and my friends in hysterics every time. I’ve never heard S.O.S. belted so passionately and yet it was so wrong. The production values were horrendous, to the point of it being distracting. Meryl chews up and spits out every line and action until about the last third of the movie (during the touching mother/daughter scene) when she settles in a little bit. But it’s nearly too late. Still, I can’t help but love the movie because of the music. It’s so infectious. I certainly hope, however, that Mr. Brosnan makes this his first and last musical.
False. I’m with el and Liz on this one. If you’re in a musical, you should be able to sing…otherwise, it’s karaoke night at your local pub with better looking people.
FALSE!
Brosnan’s horrific singing mars an otherwise wonderful film.
Irrevant, the show on stage was horrible and the movie is worse. Better singers wouldn’t have made the film have a story or songs that have lyrics that make any sense in the scenes they are haphazardly shoved in.
False.
I saw a screening a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it. Got in my car
afterwords and blasted my Best of ABBA through the night. Ya got to be a
ABBA fan going in for sure. And I adored Pierce Brosnan for going for it
and not minding looking silly.
I liked this movie way more than the stage production.
You all are hurting my feelings.
I did my best, and I tried to perfect my craft….ah forget it, I got quite the paycheck. Suckers!
True. Heck, he doesn’t have to speak, let alone talk (especially given his general failure at American accents in addition to singing). Just stand there and look pretty, Pierce, you’re damn good at that.
