Name That Movie Mondays! (Vol. 5)

You remember how it works: We embed a song. You name the film that song was used in. Everyone who answers correctly feels good about themselves. (Or, maybe not…)

This week’s track is Mandy Moore’s "I Wanna Be With You." The answer after the jump.

2000’s Center Stage. Because you don’t actually want to watch that love scene again, we give you the final dance. Funny how that number managed to erase the memory of the 100 poorly-acted minutes that preceded it.

Agreed on all counts. The final dance was great. Everything before that was ghastly. And now I am filled with shame that I remembered that movie.

  • Jill

Center Stage! I love that song, and the entire soundtrack.

  • meg

omgs, this movie was my life when it came out, I think I saw it three times in the theater, and I own the soundtrack. good times.

  • Lizzy

I’m the best god damn dancer in the American Ballet Academy who the hell are you…NOBODY!

  • Leo

Well, aren’t we all excited about Center Stage 2 opening soon??
    No?
    Ok, my mistake.

  • Verity

That would be “Center Stage,” the Oxygen channel’s favorite Saturday feel-good film that really makes one wonder just how desperate Peter Gallagher is for work.

Oh yes, the magical ballet that transcends the limits of time and costume changes. Does anybody else watch the ballet sex scene and be really creeped out that her parents are in the audience watching it?

  • Catherine

To Maria: 100% agree with you….but my shame is much profound as I have just bought it on DVD…At least I can skip everything and go directly to the last dance!

  • Christa

I tivo this everytime that it comes on, just for the last dance scene. Awesome.

  • Nicole

Sadly, this week on So you think you can dance, they used the final song and all i could think about was this.

  • Vicky

    Lizzy:
Thank you. That quote just made my day.

  • Andie

unfortunately I knew this b/c I have the song (from one of the NOW That’s What I Call Music discs) and b/c I’ve seen Center Stage about 5 times. I’m going to go hang my head in shame now.

  • Kristen

I knew this because it was the one Mandy Moore song from that era that I couldn’t stand. I remembered the video had ballet dancers, and I hadn’t seen the movie..somewhere from that came the title. And now I’m sad that I admitted liking Mandy Moore.

  • Meghan

Center Stage, of course! One of my favorite movies, atrocious acting and all.

  • lizzie

not only does the dance sex scene weird me out because her parents are watching, but also because she was supposed to do it with erik before he hurt himself

  • Martha

Lizzy, that quote is awesome. The movie, however, is not…apart from the dance sequences. Funnily enough, Nicole, I thought of “Center Stage” when they played “Canned Heat” on SYTYCD also!

  • Martha

And I always have to laugh when I see Ethan Stiefel playing the creep and Julie Kent playing the beeyotch, because in real life they’re apparently the nicest people ever.

  • Crystal

Freakin’ A – I’m never going to get one of these right. Brother…I didn’t know this one and I OWN Center Stage (like everyone else, for the last dance). I can’t hear Canned Heat and not picture this!

  • paula

you know.. I even tried to dance some of the moves that there were show in this movie, my excuse is that i was like 14

  • Dominique L.

Finally! A Name That Movie I know! Which mar or may not be slightly embarassing…

  • DK

I am not ashamed to admit that I knew this one, and that I love that movie. Center Stage may be (largely) poorly acted and cheesy, but the soundtrack is great (Red Hot Chili Peppers! Jamiroquoi! Old Michael Jackson!), the dancing is mesmerizing, and the cast is good-looking. What more do you need for a good girls-night guilty pleasure?

  • Cassie

This one was way too easy for anyone who was in high school when Center Stage came out. Although I realized that the movie was terrible, I was absolutely OBSESSED. And I totally burned a copy of the soundtrack from my friend.

  • Kate

The actors were hired for their dancing ability, not their acting ability. The dance scenes were great, especially the RHCP and Jamiroquai song at the end of the movie.

  • gila

Not only did I know this one, because I (totally, unashamedly) love this movie – but when I was playing “Higher Ground” on Guitar Hero, was I doing the dance from the Broadway Dance Center? Oh yes.

  • Applejax

Popwatch- I hate you for just making me watch that entire piece of cheese on YouTube.

  • Anna

Hahaha, I agree with Crystal… I own it too and still didn’t know the answer!

  • Kate

definitely got this as i’ve seen this movie (and know all the steps) way too many times

  • Anonymous

I don’t know. I liked the movie (well, minus the love scene) better than that final dance scene, mostly because it just retold the entire movie and was ridiculous. But I’ll agree with you about the poor acting, for the most part

  • Alex

Perhaps the most cheese-tastic ballet movie ever, the song is for Center Stage. Which I shamefully admit to owning.

  • Tiffany

I bought the soundtrack to Center Stage for the Mandy Moore songs. Oh yeah, I did it.
And, I’ve talked my boyfriend into watching Center Stage every time it airs on Oxygen (which was once a weekend for a little while). He says he likes that there’s implied sexuality in the dancing, but I know he secretly enjoys dance movies.
