'So You Think You Can Dance': Jessica's out, Comfort's in

After an injury, So You Think You Can Dance finalist Jessica King leaves and Comfort Fedoke, eliminated last Thursday, takes Jessica’s place in the Top 10.

After watching Jessica plié for her life these past few weeks on So You Think You Can Dance, one thing became apparent: No matter how much technique, soul, or heartfelt contemporary routines this girl put out there, the judges were going to bash her on something. All their critiques centered around the idea that she was dead weight in her partnership with their beloved Debbie Allen protégé Will Wingfield. Last week Nigel went so far as to say the judges wished they could have sent home two girls to save one of the bottom three boys.

Touted as the best female hip hopper, Comfort Fedoke is getting a second chance, and can be seen performing with the Top 10 dancers this Wednesday night. In a statement released by Fox, top judge and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said, "I would like to say how sorry I am that Jessica cannot continue dancing in the competition at the advice of her doctor. Her full recovery is paramount and will only come with rest. We are fortunate that Comfort has agreed to rejoin the competition and know that under the circumstances she has Jessica’s full support." No mention was made about the specifics surrounding Jessica’s injury.

Not only will Comfort be replacing Jessica in the Top 10, but she’ll take the contemporary dancer’s place on the So You Think You Can Dance tour that will hit 50 cities across the country this fall. For fans, we knew that Jess’s days were numbered, but to think the redhead was going to go out like this? And for many, Comfort’s exit last week was not only appropriate but arguably well overdue — do you think she even has it in her to return to the stage? Or will she just be a placeholder until Thursday night’s elimination? And why didn’t Nigel and the gang just bring back Thayne and really shake things up? How will Jessica’s exit and Comfort’s reappearance change things for the other contestants? Tell us what you think!

UPDATE: On the July 16 edition of SYTYCD, after both Jessica and Comfort were noticeably absent from the opening role call, Cat pulled Jessica out on stage to give us the news on her next steps. The dancer said that her doctors discovered the growing pain in her side was actually one fractured and two broken ribs, and that she’d be taking the next four weeks off to rest in order to appear on tour in the fall. Sources involved with the show and tour said that this decision will be conditional on Jessica’s health at the time of the tour; they also reported that Comfort will be on the tour acting as an alternate if Jessica is able to perform, but that nothing is confirmed at this time.

Waaaahhh…! What they should have done is bring Thayne back instead of Comfort.

Wow–I wonder if the extra stress of the “jidges” always beating on her made her a little more susceptible to injury. And it’s not right that she won’t be going on the tour. She earned that spot. They should offer her a spot anyway. I’m sure that the tour offers a lot of opportunites to the dancers.
I have a feeling that Comfort might enjoy an extra week of “comeback girl” status before she’s eliminated again. Especially now that it’s solely in the hands of the public.

  • G

I’m disappointed Comfort gets another shot, but I doubt she’ll advance any further in the competition. The public doesn’t seem to like her so much, as evidenced on the PopWatch message boards. And saying that Comfort is the best female break dancer was way wrong on Nigel’s part – Sarah from last season was overall the better dancer and the better breaker, as evidenced by her ability to connect with her partner, the audience and kick ass in any genre thrown her way.
And, FYI, Jess will probably get to go on the tour, as an “alternate.”

  • Angry Quinn

This is BS! Comfort overstayed her welcome by 3 weeks! She has been in the bottom three consistently, and there is no reason she should be on the tour and not Jessica. Why in the hell do the ‘judges’ think she can dance? She can not! BRING BACK THAYNE! The only reason he was in the bottom three was because no one liked his partner Comfort!

  • nunya

They should have brought back Chelsea Traille instead. She was cut way too soon and is a better and more versatile dancer than Comfort.

  • CJ

I thought I was the ONLY one sick of hearing ‘jidges’ every bloody week. I would have preferred Thayne come back and let both girls go. It is just prolonging the hammer by one week.

  • Nee Nee

After the hard time the judges gave her, I wouldn’t be surprised if she staged this just so that she could decide when she left before somebody else did. Poor girl. She wasn’t bad. Sure, Will out-danced her most of the time, but she wasn’t as bad as the judges made her out to be. Why in the world the judges were ever kind to Comfort, I have no idea. I swear she never bends her knees. At this point in the competition, she absolutely does not belong. She’s a burden to everyone she partners with.

  • Say Say

G listen to what the judges say he never said Comfort was the best breaker girl he sd best hip hop girl that he had seen. Why are people hating on comfort any true dancer can see that she is talented just when she wants to be primarily in group rutines not partners and yes her solos dont really make a statement but she has more heart and demonstrates more heart then quite a few of the contestatants especially jessica!!!

  • Suz

Oh jeez I just can’t take anymore Comfort!! She is so out of place in the top ten. I can’t picture her helping the chances of anyone she’s partnered with.

  • Jessica

I think they should get rid of Comfort(again), bring back Thayne, do away with Kherington and then we will have a show! The only reason Thayne was ever in danger was his partner(I refuse to even mention her name again) and her lack of ability to grasp a dance style different than her own… Can you tell I’m a little bummed that he’s gone? He deserved to make it soooo much farther. Luckily, I still have Chelsie and Mark(the best couple of the season) and Twitch!

  • Jenn

I don’t mind Jessica being gone but I wish it were under different circumstances. She wouldn’t have won and neither will Comfort. I give her two weeks, at the most. And while we’re at it, can we just get rid of Will and bring back Thayne? I never cared for Jessica but I honestly think that they were blaming her for Will’s shortcomings. His solos, amazing. But I never thought he was all that with his partner. He’s got great stage presence and a killer body but I never thought his dancing was too special. But that’s just me. Really, as long as Katee, Joshua, Mark, and Chelsie are the last four standing, I don’t care who wins. It’ll be one of those four.

  • JMO

Wouldn’t it be great if Comfort were partnered with Will? But the jidges will never let that happen. And they had to perform ballroom?

  • Your Mama Don’t Dance

Blah! I don’t want to watch Comfort dance again. Thursday show will be totally boring watching Comfort go home again. This stinks.
Totally sad for Jessica. She wasn’t terrible and doesn’t deserve to go home like that. I am sure she will be on the tour.

  • tex mex

    I agree with Your Mama!!
For the love of God, another week of mediocrity with Comfort. And I’m just really sad for the way things have gone for Jessica. What did she do to elicit such venom from the judges all along??

  • Dana

Jessica was not one of my favorites, but I don’t think she deserved as harsh ridicules as she received from the judges. As for Comfort, I agree that it only prolonged the agony for her, and she should be gone within a couple of weeks at most.

  • AK

Comfort’s elimination last week wasn’t overdue, it was unfair. Her amazing solo proved she was still in it to win it. I can’t wait to see her on Wednesday, and I hope she proves everybody wrong.

  • Shel

I am sad and disappointed about and for Jessica. I wish her a speedy recovery, though I have to say at least a small part of me is wondering if this is some face-saving strategy to mask the real reason for her exit. The girl has been unfairly abused all season, IMO, but specifically Mia was completely out-of-line with her comments last week. I wouldn’t blame the girl if she didn’t want to have a thing to do with any of them anymore. Now, on to Comfort. I feel for her, too, but I’m basically just disappointed: disappointed that she gets yet another shot at this, disappointed that she gets the prize of the tour, when I do think she had been long overdue to go home. She really doesn’t deserve this. Here’s hoping someone will spend the time trying to help her get up-to-speed with some additional training before the tour begins.

  • Mary

Do we think that Jessica really has an injury? Kinda weird no? And the fact that she will not be on the summer tour? Especially since Comfort has the bad shoulder. I wonder if this is just the story to explain her being kicked out. Last week it was totally obvious that some people were being “pimped” just like on Nigel’s other show AI.

  • red

i didnt really think that comfort should have gone home last week. i dont think that she brought thayne down or that he brought her down… i think they both just had the misfortune of not being one of the few most popular couples. jessica didnt seem like she could hold her own and i dont think she would have gotten that many votes is we were voting for individuals. comfort is really realy good at what she does and if you think about it, most of the routines she was in, including the group routines, she did really well. i hope she can bring it and prove that the show didnt make a mistake of bringing her back. as for jessica, i hope she recovers soon and can preform once again in the finale or on tour!

  • bonnie

I feelvery bad for Jessica, no dancer wants to go out due to an injury and Comfort’s departure was indeed long over due. I’m not discounting her talents as a dancer, but every week she consistently wasn’t putting herself out there, I saw no fire, no passion, no chemistry, I pretty much saw nothing. Hopefully her days are numbered and I wish Jessica a speedy recovery.

  • Em

So so sad to hear this. I wanted to see Jessica partner with someone else. Mia Michaels has been so weirdly obsessed with tearing her apart – I wanted to see what Jessica could do when she wasn’t partnered with Will, who is great, no doubt. I don’t envy any of his partners – the judges don’t want anyone blocking their view of him.
Nothing personal against Comfort, but ugh, at this point watching her is like watching an injured deer struggle to cross the rest of the highway after being hit by a car – just inevitable and sad. She should’ve been out weeks ago. She seems nice, but out of her league, and totally aware of it.
I’m so sorry to see Jessica go.

  • blondedancer8

I don’t think Comfort deserves a spot in this competition and hasn’t since week 1. She has done absolutely nothing to impress me. Her technique sucks, and her performances always bore me. How did she even make it past choreography when she tried out?? She is a disgrace to the show and those with actual talent.

  • Joy

I find it quite convenient that suddenly Jessica has an injury so severe that she is not only unable to remain in the competition, but she will not join the others on tour. Riiight. Please, Nigel, don’t be such a hypocrite! You ARE NOT sorry to see Jessica go, you and Mia have been kicking her out since day one. I like Comfort, but no way does she deserve to be in the Top Ten. Very unfair.

  • angie

    Maybe Jessica’s pregnant…

  • TO AK

AK, what were you watching? Comfort’s solos suck she does the exact same thing everytime. She should have been gone weeks ago, I don’t even think she deserved to be on the show in the first place.

  • Dana

I think Jessica decided to leave the show and I don’t blame her after the way she has been treated. Mia is just a B**ch most of the time. SYTYCD just wanted to save face so they made up the injury, otherwise why wouldn’t Jessica at least be going on the tour? Comfort is nothing special, I see tons of people who can dance better then her all the time. She should have been gone a long time ago, I wish they’d brought back someone with real talent like Kourtni. How sad will it be if they elliminate another girl who is there now with real talent and keep Comfort around even longer

  • Jana

In my opinion this decision is not about who they are bringing back but who is suddenly not continuing on…It was so apparent, (even to us middle aged non-dancers watching) that Jessica was a target for two of the judges. Will is an excellent dancer, but to constantly praise him and tear down his partner is CRUEL! Don’t the judges realize that the public is going to react to their prejudice?

  • Coach’s Mistress

Don’t fret…Comfort will be gone by weeks end. And should have brought back Thayne. Actually, why did they think they needed to bring back anybody? If somebody gets hurt on Survivor they don’t relight somebody’s torch. stupid.

  • Jenn

Comfort isn’t the greatest dancer but people need to quit being so effing hard on her. It’s not like SHE went in and gave Jessica an injury to get back into the competition herself. It’s not HER fault she’s back. It’s not like she’ll last anyways so people just need to chill out and vote for who they like and quit complaining about who they don’t like.

  • hbrie

Have you seen the new commercial for this week? It’s “Jessica’s Out” with a big red X, and “Comfort’s back”. Either the whole injury thing is made up (pretty likely), or SYTYCD is pretty heartless in using this as an advertising opportunity.
