Can Rick Rubin resurrect ZZ Top?

Zzrubin_lAccording to Billboard, ZZ Top thinks producer/mogul Rick Rubin (inset) can do for them what he did for Johnny Cash and(to a lesser extent) Neil Diamond. The boogie-rock trio reportedly wants to return to its raspy roots and make a record that resembles its ’70s hits like "La Grange" (embedded after the jump). I think this is a good idea, if only because I really liked those grimy older ZZ Top tunes and didn’t care much for the more streamlined pop sound that’s been their bread and butter for the last 25 years. Rubin tends to favor a stripped-down approach as well. I don’t know if he can restore the band to its former glory, or if anyoneat this late date still cares or still thinks of ZZ Top as more than anovelty act, but I’d love to be there in the studio just to watch Rubinand Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill trade beard grooming tips. What think you, PopWatchers?

I’ve been been a fan of the Top since 1969-70 at the People Street T-Heads in Corpus Christi Texas. They are still as great now as they were then!!!

Big mistake for ZZ to get into bed with Rick Rubin. All he does is take an artists money & run ~ ie, Beastie Boys, Misfits, etc… Memories run short. I’m a fan of ZZ Top & would hate to see them get taken advantage of…just hope they’ve done their research!!!!

I love ZZ Top. I saw them on American Idol with David Cook and it brought back memories. I love their style of music.

Given that ZZ Top have been around the block, are set in their ways, and aren’t gonna get pushed around, I’d love to see what Dr Dre can do with them! I’ll bet it’d be interesting as hell. Frankly, the thought of Rick Rubin sticking his mitts in there makes me yawny.

Told my wife when we were watching the Idol finale, if David Cook went on tour with ZZ Top, it would be huge. ZZ Top would bring their fans to the show. David Cook would bring everyone under 25, most of whom probably hadn’t heard of ZZ Top before the Idol finale… Would be HUGE, I tell you.

Once a great bues-boogie band. And then the 80′s happened. And I lost interest (I know I’m only one of a few). But “mexican Blackbird” and “Squonk” kick butt. I know, I’m old.

I saw ZZ Top in concert in August 07. They were better in person than on the radio. And when David Cook got to perform with them on Idol, it was absolutely the highlight of the finals.

Please! Rick Rubin is the guy who produce BloodSexSugarMagic for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Probably one of the best producer in the business for getting the most out of an act.

You’re right. Rick Rubin has been so bad for the careers of Johnny Cash, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Dixie Chicks, and Metallica who finally released their first Rick Rubin produced and generally critically acclaimed album since the Black album.
Why do people like you who don’t know a damned thing talk so much crap?
