Slashtastic: 'Star Trek' is Full of 'Common People'

There is a thing, in case you didn’t know it, called slash fiction. It’s where fans take beloved characters of pop culture, usually sci-fi, and imagine romances between them. And these romances are usually homosexual in nature, more often than not involving Captain James T. Kirk and his trusty Vulcan bonhomme, Mr. Spock. Don’t bother Googling — it invariably sucks, with the rarest of exceptions.

And this is the second greatest exception ever:

I didn’t actually watch, as I am not a fan of that pairing/fandom, but I think you are a bit misplaced in your ideas of “slash”. In most fandoms I’ve been in, pairings are called “ships” (short for relationships), male/male pairings are slash, female/female are femmeslash, and male/female are het. Also, slash is nowhere near only in sci-fi fandoms; it is prevalent in (almost) every fandom. On LiveJournal (where a lot of decent fanfiction is found) there are a ton of slash pairings in nearly every show you can think of. (Nick/Greg is almost as popular a pairing as Grissom/Sara for CSI, Danny/Martin was as popular as either of the main het ships of Jack/Samantha and Martin/Samantha, Sports Night’s main pairing was Dan/Casey, despite the onscreen Dana/Casey, and more).
I don’t tend to slash characters, but as a lot of my friends are slashers, and it is so incredibly popular online, I just felt I had to comment.

    Meredith’s right — you’ve got it wrong.

  • yep

Slash originated with Kirk/Spock, but to imply that’s the extent of it is ludicrous. It’s everywhere- in the LOTR fandom, in HP fandom, in BtVS fandom- and those are just 3 I follow personally. I personally don’t read it, but it’s kind of hard to ignore its prevalence or think that it’s contained just to Star Trek, and just to one particular pairing.

“invariably sucks”. I’m gonna zap some popcorn and watch the sparks fly. (I’m tempted to agree, but boy, all the little girls on LiveJournal are so gonna be all up your a.)

There are two reasons to avoid googling slash (or het for that matter):
    1) NSFW
    2) It will probably destroy your childhood.
Never for get Rule 34 of the Internet. If it exists, there is porn of it.

    That was some funny stuff.
The album that’s on, Shatner’s “Has Been,” is actually surprisingly good.

Hey!!! I love to read slash. Although some of it is so incredibly horrible and apparantly written by 13 year old girls, some of it is better than some popular novels out there. Just pick your favorite tv show – there is probably someone slashed. : )

Does anyone do reality tv slash? I’d love to read about the fan written shenanigans that occurred at the Joe Schmoe house…
