More The Must List

Give us your 'Must List' ideas!

"Dog bites man" is not a headline, but "Man bites dog" most certainly is. The clip below brings to life the Editing 101 adage  — with an aquatic twist. It’s a truly remarkable video of an encounter between a shark and an octopus that reverses all the preconceived rules of engagement popularized by Spielberg in Jaws. It’s been on YouTube for a while now, but it’s worth revisiting now that beach season is in full swing, and y’know, you need another source of self-induced terror before dipping your toes into the surf.

Mind you, the voiceover makes you wonder what on earth the aquarium staff were playing at. "Each week, keepers were finding shark carcasses in the bottom of the tank. Each week, three- to four-foot sharks kept vanishing." To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, to lose one may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose two (or more) looks like a disturbing case of could-care-less-ness.

So it’s over to you, PopWatchers. Seen any nature documentaries or anything else that qualifies for the Must List this week? Remember, your picks (including current movies/TV/music/books/games/online) need to be posted by 10 a.m. ET on Thursday, July 3, and please include your e-mail address in case your submission is chosen for the magazine.

    – “The Quantam of Solace” trailer – While the new Bond film won’t likely be as great as “Casino Royale” (#19 on the New Classics list), the preview brings all kinds of awesomeness that we’ve come to expect from Daniel Craig as 007.
    – “The Walking Dead” by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard – Issue 50 hit stores this week; meanwhile Volume 8 of the wildly successful trade paperback collection is on sale now.
    – “Mad Men” Season 1 on DVD — Do I really have to explain myself?

“All Summer Long,” by Kid Rock.

I’ve never seen that before…that video terrified me more than anything I’ve seen in a long time.

ok….now I have to be terrified of octopuses as well as sharks? another reason I’ll never get up the nerve to scuba dive.
also, I wouldn’t be surprised if this got turned into a bad monster movie. it has it written all over it.

This might barely count as a nature documentary, but After the Catch on Discovery Channel is a fascinating round table discussion with Mike Rowe and the guys from Deadliest Catch trading stories while drinking beer.

PBS ran an awesome documentary recently called the Killers of Eden. These killer whales rounded up humpbacks for whalers and drove them into Twofold Bay to be slaughtered, the orcas would then get the tongues of the dead whales. They saved whalers from drowning and from being attacked by sharks.
A little video here (under the hunt): http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/video.html

But since PBS probably won’t run it again soon, I officially second Deadliest Catch and/or After the Catch. So far this season, we’ve had bad weather, bad injuries, and even mutiny. And just what is wrong with Phil? Pretty fun!

Fleet Foxes self-titled debut CD. The combination of lush vocals, baroque sounds and somber lyrics are amazing!

    1. New Reno 911! episodes. Always a reliable source of comedy.
    2. Sam Sparro’s new song “Black & Gold” Great groove & lyrics.
    3. Be Kind Rewind. Jack Black tones it down a tad and makes a great comedy.

must for summer is cable TV’s more high end reality shows:
    A&E First 48 & Intervention
Nat Geo Locked up Abroad & Dog Whisperer
Food Network w/ the Next Food Network Star (not so high end but that over dressed Lisa Garz??? makes it look that way)

    Shirt.Woot.Com.
Last Friday I had worn a t-shirt with an illustration of a black cat and underneath the cat was the Icelandic word “Kottur (pronounced Ker-tur)” which just means “cat”. My aunt thought that it was so cute and then mentioned a site that sells similar graphic designed T’s for 10 dollars. There are even contests where you can design your own shirt.

While I’m almost certain this won’t run, Kristin Hersh (from Throwing Muses) has new music on her CASH Music site which blows me away.
