I’m intrigued and more than a little envious over the reports that Paramount has bought for J.J. Abrams (pictured) the film rights to a New York Times article that appeared in print just four days earlier, the story of a family whose renovation of a luxurious Fifth Avenue apartment turned into a scavenger hunt full of secret compartments and mysterious clues. Now, I haven’t reported on anything like that in PopWatch recently, but if I did, do you think I could get Abrams to option my blog post? What could I cover that would be up his alley? Let’s see, what if I did a where-are-they-now on the stars of Small Wonder? What if I’d learned that the little robot girl was actually played by a robot? And what if she’d grown up* to become a spy? A female cyborg spy, whose biggest puzzle is the riddle of her own identity — who created her? What was the master plan behind her creation, and how did that crappy syndicated ’80s sitcom fit in? Okay, none of this is actually, you know, true, but a story like that would be right up the Alias/Lost/Fringe guru’s alley, wouldn’t it? I’ll be waiting by the phone for your call, J.J.
*Yeah, I know, robots don’t hit puberty and grow up, but work with me here.

I’ve learned two things: Clough is amazing and JJ Abrams needs to make this movie. That was a truly fantastic article. Thanks PopWatch, yet again for calling my attention to the best things.
Great article! The designer sounds like a creative and fun person. I would love to discover that there’s a hidden scavenger hunt/game in my house but sadly, all one would find here are dust bunnies.
Thanks! That was fantastic. Last night I was trying to explain the genius that is J.J. Abrams to my peon of a friend… needless to say, it went completely over her head, but my point is this: the man is amazing. He could take a crap story and turn it brilliant. Granted, this story kind of rocks, so I’m uberly excited.
Go Abrams!
That article is very cool but I wonder if it would have been optioned if it had appeared in the Des Moines Register or Times Picyaune. Then again, only a New Yorker would probably come up with such a crazy/kickass thing, so who knows.
Ok. So the thing I found most interesting thing about this post was the idea he had for the show. I actually think this is a great idea for a new show. Playing off an actual 80′s TV show without recreating it. I’d definitely watch! And JJ sounds like the perfect person to create it.
Oh and about the point, “robots don’t hit puberty and grow up”. Um, have you been watching BSG.
so, someone accidentally enters a room in an unassuming midwest elementary school and discovers a secret passageway to where EVERYONE’S PERMANENT FILES FROM ALL TIME ARE KEPT! Random opening of files leads the new building service worker to a strange conclusion…there is a master plan and your future was determined by the time you reached third grade. As he finds his own file and changes his handwriting grade, a break in time and space appears….

Wow, that article was so cool. And this would make a much better movie than tv show. I’m not sure why everyone is assuming it would be a tv show with Paramount purchasing it.
