Happy (belated) 3rd birthday, PopWatch!

Shirleybassey_lThis past weekend, while everyone was seeing if the second time was the charm for the Hulk, watching basketball and golf, rocking out at Bonnaroo, avoiding extreme weather, or (in the case of much of the PopWatch staff) wrapping up our vacations, this blog’s third birthday on Friday, June 13, went quietly unmarked. So, happy belated birthday, PopWatch! How can we make it up in celebratory PopWatch fashion? Some suggestions that have been floating around the office today:

• Have Michael Slezak perform his legendary karaoke version of "Goldfinger," by Shirley Bassey (pictured). Pearls optional.

• The customary third anniversary present is leather, so we should all wear chaps to the office.

• Along those lines, watch the DVD of CMT’s 20 Sexiest Videos of 2005 special. (Surprisingly, this was not Mandi Bierly’s idea.)

Top Doll pool party!

• Costume gala: Come dressed as your favorite Swingtown character. Quaaludes optional. Line dancing not optional.

Help us out here, dear readers. How should we celebrate PopWatch’s third birthday? Be creative.

    Happy birthday!
Why not celebrate by bringing back the weekly PopWatch HeadScratchers!

  • Mantrah

I would like to see more of the writers themselves… hello, Annie B! DWTS is over, you can come out now Miss Barrett! Did she pass out at her cubicle a month ago? Someone needs to check on that. I miss Idolatry too…..can Annie and Slezak just do an Idolatry every day talking about random bs? And more regular Top Dolls please (it’s true ya’ll, we love it)! Slezak is a genius, but he already knows that. But really– hooray for PopWatch’s 3rd birfday…I visit every day and my favorite posts are Mandi B’s “confessionals” so whatever you do, keep doing those, lady! Your embarrassment is our benefit :-)

I think you were on the right track with the costume ideas, though why limit yourself to Swingtown? Dress as your favorite movie character. Ever. Like, no bars held. Oh, and there should be prizes for the best impression, because, y’know, costumes can only take you so far.
In honor of being, like, EW and all, you should also play ‘Six Degrees of Kevin’ Bacon with your staff. Whoever actually finishes should win a prize.
    That’s it for now.

I say you all take to the streets of New York and keep catching taxis until you get the Cash Cab, then clean up on the pop culture questions.
Or you could just drink. Hell, have one for me; you guys are doing a fine job.

I love birthdays! You should have an average rich three year old birthday party. What’s Suri and Coco doing?

  • Court

    Give us free stuff? ;D

  • Michael J

SLEZAK! SLEZAK! Slash Top Doll pool party. I’m greedy! I want both. :)

  • Daniel

Wow, three years? It certainly doesn’t feel like it’s been that long since PW was born. I must admit, I didn’t jump on the PopWatch bandwagon until a few months after its inception, but ever since, I’ve been a devoted follower, and have read every entry that I took an interest in — which is about 75% of them. Keep on rockin’ this reader’s world (and bring back the weekend HeadScratchers)!

I agree with the person who said more videos, I like putting faces to the names. And I LOVE “Idolatry!”

  • Ian Mac

I was wondering if you would make a post about the birthday! Popwatch and I share a birthday, so naturally, I was looking forward to a B-Day post.
I would definitely most look forward to seeing Slezak doing his best Shirley Bassey.
*sigh* I reember the first day of this little blog.

    Slezak karaoke please!
Btw, you guys should totally go on that new TLC show, the singing office, I would so watch

  • orville

How about Slezak doing karaoke while wearing leather chaps? And a video of said event for all of us loyal Popwatchers, of course.

  • bb

Yes, Slezak in chaps and singing Goldfinger, on a special edition of Idolotry interviewing the Top Dolls.

  • Julie

A Very Special Idolatry with Randy, Paula, and Simon, in which they learn a Very Important Lesson involving Hugging and Learning and Growing. Paula’s loopiness, Randy’s inability to speak, and Simon’s permanent need for a man bra–it’s After School Special Time!! Followed by a Top Doll pool party. It’s true, y’all!

  • Elizabeth

A video tour of everyone’s office/cubicle, and a Office Concert.
Whatever works for you guys – lord knows if it werent for this blog and website I’d have nothing to do at work :)

  • Winona

I think you should make Slezak do karaoke to “MMMBop” until he gets the words right.

  • NineDaves

come to my office and do my job for a day. don’t worry – you spend like half the day on popwatch anyway…

  • David B.

How about you take Whit’s suggestion from yesterday and permanently ban Slezak from popwatch? Could not find a better thing to celebrate!

  • Lukey Loo

David B = Whit? Mos def.

  • wildecat

Yo, David B! There shall be no hating on PopWatch’s Very Special Day! (And I love me some Slezak!)
I second Elizabeth’s idea of a video tour of everyone’s cube, perhaps followed by some line dancing or a reenactment of Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

  • becks

Why, a birthday haiku of course!!
    Full of witty snark
I come here daily to laugh
    P-Dub til the end

  • Snarf

How about a “Best of” Pop watch?
Spare the snark spoil the pop

  • Chaddogg

    Happy Birthday!
As for how to celebrate…could you introduce Ausiello and have him start writing please?! Oh, and have him and Doc Jensen do a Lost Season 4 Mega Recap Video???
I’ll also accept any of the following: 1) More random tours of your offices to see the random stuff you’re sent; 2) pictures of Syesha dressed as Wonder Woman; 3) anything about Kristen Bell.

  • Nancy

Happy Birthday Popwatch! I didn’t realize you were so young! Special thanks to Slezak, Byerly, Barrett, Pastorek, and Susman for excellent, excellent writing. Popwatch is the best popular culture site on the web, in my opinion. You guys rawk. Take yourselves out, celebrate your success, and have a great time. You deserve it. P.S. Wouldn’t mind seeing a video of Slezak’s karaoke. Please share! :)

  • Jelana

Slezak in pearls. Really, there are no other options.

  • KLF

Happy Belated B-Day! I hope you are not too hungover tomorrow so we can have more fun with Popwatch! But I am liking the idea of leather chaps. Add a dash of pearls and then secretly take photos of the staff and post them for us to write the captions. With the people that post here, we could have days of fun with that!

  • Ep Sato

I’d love to see a video with Annie B and Mike Slezak popping out of a cake at a party for the popwatch staff. The background music would be some super hip group chosen by Whittlz, and the reactions of special “guest stars” would be shown once the cake is busted open.

  • Jennifer

    Happy Birthday!
You could make Inappropriate Crush puppets and put on a show! It would be awesome.

  • JoeC

Well, I think that Doc Jensen for Lost next year could go more into details about every last cultural reference the show makes and how it might figure into the plot. Doc just doesn’t do enough work on his Lost column. It’s called tough love, Doc..

  • BJohnson

You had me at Slezak karaoke. He needs to do something more fabulous and dance worthy. May I suggest “Love Shack” or “Groove is in the Heart?” If he must do “Goldfinger” combine that with some others posts; jumping out of a cake in chaps.
