I’ve always been a little afraid of dance music, even though I love to dance. (I think I just had a few bad experiences with tracks that had no lyrics. I like words.) But now, I’m totally diggin’ Cyndi Lauper’s new song "Into the Nightlife" (video below), and I’m ready to give the genre another try — if you’ll help me. What other songs might I like? Again, keeping in mind that I like words. And, for what it’s worth, that I’m still obsessed with Duran Duran’s electro-set versions of "All She Wants Is" and "I Don’t Want Your Love."

Anything off the latest Roisin Murphy Album “Overpowered.” Try “You Know Me Better” and “Cry Baby” from that album.
Also take a listen to September’s “Cry for You.” It’s great for an early morning cardio workout.
Oh and I forgot…
“Just Dance” by Lady Gaga. Warning though…this song will get in your head.
I’m not 100% sure but it looks like she filmed the video in the bathroom of Splash Bar (SBNY) a gay bar in NYC.
Anyone else agree
Is that Colton Ford in the video?
Try anything by Ultra Nate?
Any remixed versions from Delerium or Conjure One usually deliver. Also look up Armin Van Buuren (the guy writes amazing songs) Going Wrong is a great song to work out to.
Mandi, if you really like Dance Music, check out the recent edition of Blender. There is a great article on Vince Clarke, aka: the father on Synth Dancepop. Apparently the rumor about him being gay is false. He quit Depeche Mode after the rest of the group gave a thumbs down to his ballad “Only You”. “Only You” eventually became his signature song.
I like dance-ish stuff (I’m with you Mandi, I like words too!):
I Will Go With You, by Donna Summer:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=c6BCT8t41iA
Madonna’s Confessions on a Dance Floor
Blake Lewis’ A.D.D.
Mariah’s Remixes CD is great dance music, Mandi. Also I would check out Donna Summer’s greatest hits(let me take this moment to protest the fact that she’s not in the Rock Hall of Fame….
Try this one:
Dance (amybe?), but with a little more going on
Yes, that IS Colton Ford in the video…YUM!
Cyndi’s new album is full of great dance music.
Other great dance music:
“Future Lovers” off of Madonna’s “Confessions on a Dancefloor” (The best dance album EVER!)
“Free Me” (Dr, Octavo Seduction Remix) Emma
“Only One Too” (DJ Volume Mix) Jewel
“Can’t Keep a Secret” (Josh Harris Club Mix) Jacinta
DVNO by Justice, and when you watch the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qPtx819idI you will be able to sing along with it! Totally agree with Ida Corr vs. Fedde Le Grand and September’s Cry for You. Also check out anything by Booty Luv.
This is really hard, Mandi, because “dance music” is a very broad term. There are all types of genres and sub-genres (IDM, trance, jungle, electro, dub), and a ton of artists who record nothing but dance music, in addition to DJs who do fantastic dance remixes of pop and rock songs. A good place to start online is Digital Eargasm (digitaleargasm.blogspot.com), on which some actual DJs post the choicest of choice remixes. On the radio, if you’re in New York, turn the dial to 103.5, “The Beat of New York” which (almost) always plays great dance music. And on iTunes, check out the following:
Robyn – Who’s That Girl and Cobrastyle
Girls Aloud – Girl Overboard and Close to Love off Tangled Up (though all of their albums are filled with great dance-pop)
Dannii Minogue – The entire Neon Nights album
Kylie Minogue – In My Arms, Like A Drug, and Wow off of X, along with the B-Sides Carried Away and Do It Again
Paul van Dyk – White Lies
Tiesto – In The Dark
BT – Never Gonna Come Back Down
I second anything by Girls Aloud and Booty Luv. Take a listen to Scott Mills’ Floor Filler on BBC Radio 1. There’s tons of fun dance songs played.
Well, the Lauper track was produced by one of the same guys responsible for Madonna’s “Get Together,” so maybe that’s the next step. I’d vote for anything (with vocals) by Basement Jaxx (“Romeo,” “Gett Me Off,” “Rendez-Vu,” “Plug It In,” “Good Luck,” etc.) or some nice Sophie Ellis-Bextor tracks, perhaps beginning with “Murder on the Dance Floor” or “Me and My Imagination.”
What is an electro-set?
Tiesto
Annie’s Anniemal album…
If you like the DD Electro-set, try their song Tempted, off the new CD. Also, try Ferry Corsten’s stuff. Not as many words, but I tend to like it anyway, particularly Fire.
Anything by Yelle, especially “Je Veux Te Voir” and “Mon Meilleur Ami”. She ROCKS.
great track and its not even the best cut from her cd! Is that filmed at Splash in NYC?
try Peter Bedingfield, I gotta get through this, extremely mainstream, but fun….
ok I suck, david bedingfield, gotta get thru this, sorry.
never let me post again, daniel bedingfield, gotta get thru this
from a few years back, amuka’s appreciate me and the junior vasquez remix of from the inside from gioia bruno formely of expose, great great songs.
This is a great track and I love the video. I also love how people are asking if that’s the basement of the bar, Splash in NYC trying to be coy. If you have to ask, then you’ve prolly already been down there doing god knows what! JK
Words & 80s-esque..
Kylie: http://youtube.com/watch?v=RE8EAqneUbM
there’s more but I can’t think right now! lol
Jefferson, great suggestion about Roisin Murphy….she has been on my playlist since March….great dance album, two great song suggestions….I would also recommend some everything but the girl….and definitely some morcheeba!
I agree with the poster that it is hard to determine what exactly is dance. I went it my iTunes and had it arrange my music by genre and I was shocked to see that I only have four “Dance” genre and everything else is Electronic or Industrial!
Anywho, so I will just list the artist’s that get me moving: Rogue Traders (“Watching You” reminds me of the 80s), Moby (anything but especially “Flower”), NIN (“Ringfinger” and “Head like a Hole”), Chemical Brothers (“Galaxy Bounce”), Fatboy Slim (“Rockafeller Skank”), Gravity Kills (“Guilty”), and (I hang my head low in shame) Kelly Clarkson’s “Walkwaway.”
Basement Jaxx is a great suggestion. Also, you really should try the new Moby disc, “Last Night.” Particularly the songs “I Love to Move in Here” (a great crossover song if you’re into R and B) and “Disco Lies,” just a great song period.
