OK, I’m probably crazy, but I was at 6 Flags Magic Mountain in LA last week w/ my 12 yo. We were waiting in line for the Mummy ride. They were running a video of some hooded figure warning us of the doom we were facing and I SWEAR it was David Sedaris’ voice.

After a messy breakup, I read “The Last You’ll Hear from Me,” from Barrel Fevel . . hilarious! Amy Sedaris had me roaring when she recorded the short story for AudioFile.

I’ve only read Me Talk Pretty One Day fully through, so my fave is also “You Can’t Kill the Rooster.” When I am reading a book, I usually take it with me everywhere but found that it was v. weird to read Sedaris in public. You are laughing way too hard and you look way too crazy. Case in point: Thank you Tracey, as I had never read the Six to Eight Black Men before, and died laughing at work. In the middle of it, our main phone line rang, and I am covering for the receptionist. It took all my self control to answer the phone like a professional adult. I think my voice quivered with laughter anyway.

Last summer I was studying abroad in Spain and was reading Me Talk Pretty One Day (which should be required reading for anyone overseas). I was reading “12 Moments in the Life of an Artist” and when I got to the performance peice where he was bleating I was laughing so loud and uncontrollably I had to leave the apartment because I had woken up the entire family from their siesta (I was living with a Spanish family, who didn’t understand why the crazy American was laughing). Needless to say I felt like a character in his essays the entire trip.

“Jesus Shaves” and “You Can’t Kill The Rooster” are classics, full of lines that made me laugh embarrassingly loud and have become part of my everyday speech. Repeat After Me is so sad and sweet and funny that it is never far from my mind. But nothing will beat the moment I first picked up Me Talk Pretty One Day in the bookstore, knowing nothing about the book or Sedaris, randomly turned to the title story and quickly found myself unable to breathe, needing to sit down, wheezing from laughter.
