Spot Inspection: Your current karaoke set list

A man in Wilmington, NC recently set a new Guinness World Record for the most continuous hours of karaoke singing. He sang for 39 hrs. and 2 mins., besting the previous record by just over an hour. While my first thought was, I wonder what instrumental breaks he used for trips to the men’s room, my second thought was almost as practical: How do you come up with a 39-hr. set list?
In case any of you are pondering your own run at the record, I say we all list our current karaoke set lists below for pillaging. I just happened to karaoke earlier this week, and debuted all-new material. (Sorry, Pat Benatar and Bon Jovi. But I’ll be back!)

Duran Duran’s "Wild Boys": I’m all about the murder (murder murder) echo, and any excuse to visualize Simon and John sharing a mic. (HOT.)
Cyndi Lauper’s "Change of Heart": Why doesn’t she do the hiccup during the second chorus? S—, I should have asked her when I sat down with her recently on the set of As the World Turns.
Bel Biv DeVoe’s "Do Me": There is a special place reserved in your brain for those raps, too, I’m sure.
Aerosmith’s "Cryin’": My new favorite karaoke song, but it comes with a three-drink minimum.
• Mandy Moore’s "Candy" (below): A nice alternative to Britney.

Celine Dion’s "It’s All Coming Back to Me Now": Honestly, if I didn’t have neighbors, I would belt this song out every night as a stress reliever.

Your turn.

The only karaoke I have ever actually sung was backup on “A Lion Sleeps Tonight” in a pub in Edinburgh, and I think that’s probably enough for me. However, if I were to get drunk enough (and assuming it is possible for me to get drunk enough without passing out and/or succumbing to alcohol poisoning) I might just hit you up with a little “Margaritaville.”

Tom Jones. Sexbomb. Inarguably the greatest song ever, so if a machine actually has it, I’m rocking it.

I always stick to the classics: Madonna’s “Material Girl”, Shania Twain’s “Man, I Feel Like A Woman”, Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock ‘N Roll”.
If I get reaaaally really drunk, though, there’s always a chance I’ll take a shot at “I Will Love You”. Which is not really that fun for anyone listening.

I don’t karaoke much (and for good reason), but my signature is “Stacy’s Mom.” And I could probably be coerced into doing about anything from Grease; if I ever find karaoke with “There Are Worse Things I Could Do,” watch out.

i haven’t karaoke’d in about a year, and i miss it so. i’d LOVE to be able to do “Something to Talk About.” My standard at the moment is “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” I KILL that song.

I’ve been known to do “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'”, “Oh! Darling” and “Like a Virgin”, most while completely sober.

My best friend and I learned Mandy’s Candy choreography to do it at parties. It was pretty cool.

Usually when I go, I get there early, so I can do three songs. Here are the three that would end up being performed if I had to put together a setlist, in order:
“Only the Good Die Young” – Billy Joel
    “Nice and Slow” – Usher
“I Believe in a Thing Called Love” – The Darkness
(I’d also throw in a duet performance of “Picture” by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow if my girl Erica feels like doing a duet that night…and by “doing a duet”, I mean “being dragged down by my subpar vocals.”)

My roommates and I sing “It’s all coming back to me now” the seven minute version alllll the time. One of us makes a cymbol crashing sound and then “there were nights…” I’m so glad we’re not alone.

Only been drunk enough to Karoake twice, but 2 of my co-workers and I did an outstanding version of Wilson Phillips’ “Hold On” at our company Christmas party last year. Sadly, I didn’t need to look at the monitor for the words.

I am a self-proclaimed karaoke junkie! However my partner in crime is living in Japan right now, so I haven’t been in awhile. Some of my standards include:
    Mandy Moore – Candy
Bonnie Raitt – Something to Talk About
Pat Benatar – Hit Me With Your Best Shot
John Mellencamp – Hurt So Good
Cheap Trick – I Want You To Want Me
Dixie Chicks – Anything off the first album or Goodbye Earl

the local bar down the road from our house has karaoke every friday night – and my roommates and I are regulars!
    my faves to sing:
*weezer – buddy holly : the song’s so catchy and fun everyone sings along
*fiona apple – criminal : just a plain awesome song that my tone-deafness can actually pull off
and, by far the greatest song I ever pulled off at karaoke?
‘Everyone’s a little bit racist sometimes’ off the Avenue Q soundtrack
at first jaws dropped, but I got a standing ovation at the end

I’m all about “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.” The accompanying gestures really sell the whole thing (especially “the slamming of the door”).
If you’re going for 39 hours, picking lengthy songs is probably a good idea like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which is best attempted with a group.
“Sweet Caroline” usually gets good crowd involvement and I like to really take it home with “The Greatest Love of All.” “Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart” is a great partner song.
I’m definitely going to be rocking “Sexbomb” next time I karaoke – thanks for the suggestion, b0bbyr0we.
