It's Must List time again? Far out!

Categories: Must List

Swingtowngrantshow_lOn my Must List this week is the MVP of CBS’ new drama Swingtown: Grant Show’s awesome mustache. Not only does the lip ornament render Show completely unrecognizable as the erstwhile Jake of Melrose Place, but it also exudes ’70s pornstar seediness that is perfect for his character (a swingin’ airline pilot) and the show’s entire suburban key-party vibe. Clearly, it’s the best ’stache on TV since Jason Lee introduced his My Name Is Earl facial hair three years ago. (Swingtown debuts tomorrow night; keep an eye out for my TV Watch on Friday.)

Your turn: Tell us your Must List picks, up to three of your favorites in current TV/movies/music/books/games/online. Please include your e-mail address, in case we choose your submission for the magazine. Deadline is Thursday, June 5, at 10 a.m. ET.

iCue.com – Perfect for armchair political pundits and TV news media junkies (like me). New website from NBC News – can watch tons of clips and discuss and pontificate.

Madonna, because her store has candy galore.

Grant Show’s mustache is no match for The Book of Bert’s compendium of best mustaches ever! Rock the mustache like the porn stars you are.

I’d need to say the FLOBOTS song, Handlebars. Because they are from Denver, I thought I had been hearing it on the radio because I live in Denver. Apparently, the FLOBOTS made it to Leno and just released an album. Yay FLOBOTS!

Following the recent passing of Harvey Korman, I’ve found myself (along with many friends and family) checking out old “Carol Burnett Show” clips and bloopers on Youtube. Classic Korman skits like the Dentist and Speedo Airlines are great, but the ultimate gut-busting-laugh-until-you-cry clip is Tim Conway’s Elephant Story (unedited). Five minutes of giggles and laughs:

Dean Koontz new book in the Odd Thomas series, Odd Hours
    very very good

    1. “The Shadow Isle” by Katharine Kerr – Kerr’s Deverry series = greatest fantasy series ever
    2. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As a King from WiiWare – Highly addicting kingdom building game ala Final Fantasy
    3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – Saw it opening night, saw it again last weekend and will probably go see it again this weekend.

I read the “Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show” is coming out on DVD.
    Whoo-hoo!!

  • Chris G

Weeds Season 3 on DVD. Why hasn’t Elizabeth Perkins won an Emmy yet? She’s portrays the worst mother on TV!
Meet the Spartons on DVD. This so-called “spoof” movie is horrible! In dishonor of its home video release, surely you should watch Airplane! instead. And please don’t call me Shirley.
The Strangers in theaters. Am I the only one who left the theater with a dire need of new underwear?

    Movies:
    1. Juno is one of the best movies I have seen recently. It’s funny & sweet but handles the pregnancy issue seriously. Plus the music is great!
    2. Young at Heart was a fantastic movie! It really brought out all your emotions. I’ve recommended it to everyone I know!
    TV shows
    1. Jon & Kate Plus 8- I recently began watching this show and am amazed every time I see it. The kids are adorable and I love watching the parents handle the kids.
    2. Dexter- This show is fascinating. Every episode held my attemtion. Micahel C. Hall is excellent- creepy but so good at it!
    3. The Office- still one of the funniest things on TV!

The return of the Mole. It was such a great show (at least the non-Celebrity versions) and Monday night’s show has me excited for the new season.

  • Grace

I can’t get enough of the album “Raising Sand” by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss — yes, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. On paper, it seems like it would never work (a rock god and a bluegrass girl?!), but the album is pure genius. It’s one of those rare records where every single song is great.

  • strickens_girl

I’ll second Handlebars by Flobots. My 5 year old son knows most of the words now because we listen to it all the time in the car. I’m excited to see them in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, they put on a great show to go with such a powerful and entertaining song.

Books: All the Way Home by David Giffels. Funny, poignant and inspiring. The lengths that one man goes to provide a home for his family. Great read or gift for Father’s Day.

    1. Wale – The Mixtape About Nothing. This mixtape by the DC-up-and-comer is Seinfeld themed and it’s amazing! It’s free for download at http://www.elitaste.com. The mixtape tackles subjects such as race (“The Kramer”), women (“The Grown Up”), and the hip-hop industry (“The Perfect Plan”). It’s a great cd for Seinfeld lovers and music lovers alike.
    2. Rcrdlbl.com
This is a site run in collaboration with indie record labels that put up free downloads of new or exclusive songs from various artists. They range from a non-CD track by Santogold to a Justice remix with Mos Def and Spank Rock to Moby!

    ~My Must List~
    1) Ting Ting’s CD release, “We Started Nothing.” All the songs are fun summer songs, just waiting for a listen!
    2) MTV’s Legally Blonde The Musical: The Search For Elle Woods. Nothing like people following their dreams, with Broadway sized drama to follow!

  • Ep Sato

Phantom Planet-Raise the Dead. I’ve been loving this fantastic garage rock album since it came out in April and trying to pimp it since then. EW gave the album a B+, and the first single “Do the Panic” should excite fans of old horror movies and rock and rollers alike

  • Dana

Weezer’s video for “Pork and Beans”. And the song’s not half bad either.

I’ll have to second the vote for the return of The Mole. That was always one of those reality shows that deserved so many more viewers than it actually got, so I’m glad its back. Nice to see that they’re already getting into the game too.
My second pick is Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.” Infectiously pop-y in all the best ways, it’s actually a welcome earworm.
Finally, “The Kelly Affair” by Be Your Own Pet. Despite having an incredibly stupid name, the song is one of those great indie rock songs that actually works for those of us that aren’t trying to be stupid hipsters.

    1. Mad Men on DVD
    2. And needless to say, Sex in the city, which sold out Times Square theaters 5 days in a row.

    – “Kick-Ass” by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. – Issue 3 of this insanely entertaining twist on the superhero tale hits stores today.
    – The “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” red-band trailer – In the trailer, Elizabeth Banks and Seth Rogen direct an open casting call for their sex film with unsurprising vulgarity, as only Kevin Smith could bring you. Disgusting, but still funny.
http://www.metacritic.com – A much more reliable site for collecting reviews and finding an average grade than Rotten Tomatoes, yet it somehow is way less popular, and oftentimes unheard of by even the most frequent internet users, compared to RT.

So You Think You Can Dance. I can’t imagine this season out-dancing Danny, Sabra, Lacey or Neil but after seeing Brandon Bryant perform last week I’m hoping to be proven wrong.

  • Rose Tyler

First I’d like to say that I promise to check my e-mail every five minutes if you choose to grant me this honor. Moving on…
    1. Deadliest Catch- I’ve come to care and respect these guys so much that my stomach is in knots the entire hour hoping nothing bad happens to them.
    2. Secret Diary of a Call Girl- Coming to Showtime. I’ve seen the British episodes and they are the perfect blend of comedy and naughty fun.
    3. My Morning Jacket “Evil Urges”- Even my kids walk around the house singing “highly suspicious”. It’s that catchy and that good. My kids have good taste.

  • Stephanie T.

Show: Last Comic Standing for three reasons:
    1. Dave Foley dyed his hair back to red and shaved his facial hair making him recognizable.
    2. During the semi- finals Dan Naturman was unfairly kicked off season three no thanks to the producers. Naturman made a comeback.
    3. Erin Foley is currently one of the funniest female stand-ups.
Book: Snuff Chuck Palahniuk- a 600 man porn gangbang film accidently turns into a Snuff film. It’s a short book, but it’s good.
    Movie- Sex and the City

  • Brandon

    1. “Maybe Tonight” by Nicole Atkins – she has a nice voice.
    2. Post Secret – this is seriously one of the coolest things ever. you have to check it out for yourself.
    3. The Visitor – this is the best movie so far this year!

  • Brandon

Also – Secret Diary of a Call Girl – i’ve seen some of the british episodes already and this show is awesome! billie piper is awesome!

  • pirate

1)The Soup w/ Joel McHale(it’s been nominated before, but I believe it should be nominated every week)
2)The Late Late Show w/ Craig Ferguson(was a Conan fan, then I flipped the channel to see the sixteenth funniest man, and I never looked back)
    3)We Started Nothing(The Ting Tings)
    4)Here I Stand(Usher)

  • Julie

Cynthia Nixon in Sex and the City Movie

  • Rebel_Joo

Zack and Miri Make a Porno teaser trailer- what’s better than Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks riffing on a porn casting call? oh yeah, no spoilers!
Al Green “Lay It Down”- showing that old-school soul can still send shivers to all the right places.
My Morning Jacket “Evil Urges”- another great album by one the best bands around. “Highly Suspicious” is the funky curveball that will get anyone smiling and booty-shaking.
