Snap Judgment: J.J. Abrams' 'Fringe'

Looking at the trailer for J.J. Abrams’ new fall Fox drama Fringe (h/t to Wired’s Underwire blog), my first thought was: Are you sure it’s not supposed to be called "Syringe"? Look, there’s a guy injecting himself with some horrible flesh-eating plague — on an airplane full of passengers! (Guess it costs extra to sit in the no-plague section.) Look, there’s newcomer Anna Torv, as a persistent FBI agent, getting strapped to electrodes in some Frankenstein lab! Look, there’s Blair Brown from Altered States! It looks like Abrams has tossed the intrigue and paranoia of his Alias and Lost (hey, there’s Lance Reddick, Lost’s creepy Matthew Abbadon!) into a blender with the clinical gore and putrefaction so casually displayed on shows like the CSIs and House. Fun for the whole family! I dunno, this could be interesting, and it’s always good to see Brown, and it’ll be nice to see Joshua Jackson playing a grownup, but I lost interest about a minute-and-a-half into this trailer. Guns, gene-splicing, paranormal abilities — been there, done that, much of it on a little show you may have heard of called The X-Files. Got something else, J.J.? Don’t hold out on us.

I think it looks good. Have some more faith. It’s J.J. Abrams. How often has he let us down. I will definitely be tuning in.

I liked Cloverfield and I love Lost. I’ll give it a chance, but I’m not incredibly over-excited. Dollhouse isn’t really gripping me either, but then, I never would have suspected how much I loved a show about a varsity girl or westerns in space.

If there’s one minor complain I had about the “Lost” season finale is that ***SPOILER ALERT (so I don’t get jumped by angry “Lost”-on-DVR watchers) **** we didn’t get to see any Matthew Abbadon. I loved Reddick on “The Wire” and “Oz” and I LOVED that character. I’ll probably check out “Fringe” just for him.
(Ok, if I had a second minor complaint of the finale and the season in general, it’d be the mostly complete waste of Juliet, one of my favorite characters from last year. Her “showcase” episode was, by far, the season’s worst, but that’s neither here nor there.)

Gary are you kidding me? This looks like it has the potential to out-Lost LOST.

I will give any tv show with Joshua Jackson a chance. He was the only thing that made Dawson’s Creek tolerable.

jj abrams + pacey = tivo season pass

This would have made a good episode of the X-Files.

Looks like Daniels got a promotion! Sounds good to me!

while I’ve been an avid JJ Abrams follower from Felicity to Alias to Lost, this one might be too intense for me. I’ll probs watch the first episode though.

Seriously, they had me at Joshua Jackson. I don’t care what the content is, I’m with him no matter what. So bring it on!

  • Snarf

Forgot to mention. Abrams casting JJ (Pacey) in this = ratings post & genius casting. Women who wouldn’t normally watch this type of show will tune in (and keep tuning in) because of him.

I like it, not sure about the lead, she looks so young.

I’ll certainly give it a shot. I’ve been an Abrams fan since Felicity and always hope that what he brings will be better than the last. That being said, my main reason for watching? The undeniably sexy, yet highly underated Joshua Jackson. I can’t wait to have him back on tv!

JJ Abrams has dropped the ball on occasion: What about Brian? Six Degrees
And could someone please find Jennifer Garner a new show!!!

  • Raven_Moon

I’ll be watching the pilot, at least. After that, we’ll see.

I make it a point to at least give everything JJ Abrams is involved with a shot. I actually did watch every episode of Six Degrees and What About Brian. Brian started good, but turned into a stinker. And Six Degrees…never worked. But that’s ok, because as long as you make shows like Felicity, Alias and Lost, I’ll program my dvr for you.

How about we watch the show first, judge after, huh… SUSMAN?
    You know I love you.

  • ilana

    pacey is back!!!

  • D-Roc

Come on – give it a chance – when has JJ ever let us down? ;) This isn’t X-Files..many of the early reviews have said as much http://fringe-forum.com

Yeah, back off and give JJA the benefit of the doubt. His track record ain’t too shabby. Besides, I’m getting tired of watching Discovery, History Channel and reruns of Cops in lieu of inane reality muck. I’m looking forward to Fringe.

  • GeeMoney

Is anyone as sick of J.J. Abrams, like I am? He is a SHOW RUINER! He ruined Felicity, Alias, and now Lost! I’m sooooooo over him and his wacked out ideas and shows. ARRRRGGGH!

I watched the pilot episode and I really enjoyed it. It really brought back my love for x-files. Check the pilot out at:

    I saw the Pilot already
It was poorly executed. They really blew it because the star–Anna Torv–has this look that is perfect.
But nothing pulled me into this world. It seemed so contrived. Even when were giving you big reveals you get this feeling like—yeah…who just made that up?
You cant just have cool scifi ideas..you have to execute them on screen so the viewer gets the chills===a sense that they are hearing something important
With this I was like—who wrote this terrible script? Of all the ways to portray things–this is the best way?
The gigantic blunder they make is at the beginning(which is where you MUST sell the show)–the whole thing surrounds an attempt to save Anna Torv’s lover. The problem is we dont give 2 craps about him–This part has to played by some adorable in order that we want him saved too…well we dont care–so it robs the episode of its potency.
