Much like the majority of the nation’s movie-going public, I headed to the Cineplex this weekend to catch the Sex and the City movie. [Please stop reading if, like me, you're crazy spoilerphobic and want to avoid even the smallest plot details.] And while I generally enjoyed the film (despite wishing it had a few more laughs and, as usual, taking issue with the too-often infuriating central romance), one thing struck me as I made my way into work this morning: the scarcity of dialog for Carrie Bradshaw’s head gay, Stanford Blatch (pictured). In fact, until I double-checked with my pal Kristen Baldwin, I wasn’t sure actor Willie Garson spoke a single word in the SATC movie. (Kristen reminded me that Stanford did indeed toss out the zinger, "When I get married I’m going to wear something just like it — only bigger!" during Carrie’s Vogue shoot.)
Yeah, I know Stanford scored one laugh-out-loud moment — that New Year’s smooch with Mario Cantone’s Anthony — yet I couldn’t help but wonder: Did anyone else think his role was a little bit anemic? And was there anything else about the movie that left you scratching your head? Holla back!

Michael…first I want to say how much I enjoy your writings, videos and especially humor….you always make me laugh….as for Sex and the City…i thought it was awesome…Stanford was very quite and we caught that…don’t know why!! 10 of us gays, I mean guys went and had a blast!!
I thought I was the only one who noticed the lack of Stanford! I kept noticing him hanging around but he never talked. Anthony got more lines than him and I have to say that I love Stanford a whole of a hell lot more. I have a good feeling that Willie Garson had more lines but they ended up on the editing room floor. I guess we’ll have to check out the deleted scenes on the DVD.
I missed Stanford so much during this movie. I always adored his relationship with Carrie. Hopefully if there is a sequel there will be more Standford, the gay husband.
I agree, Stanford could have used a few more scenes and lines but at least Anthony got some good ones. I adored the movie but my only question was how exactly did Carrie’s apartment get big enough to host a baby shower once she remade it into her “grown up apartment??”
I thought all the men kinda got short shrift – Smith and Harry only had a couple lines more than Stanford and Anthony. I could have maybe done without the fashion show to include a bit more from them, but on the whole I just adored it. The only things that left me scratching my head: Samantha’s the maid of honor? And why would anyone in the world want a $300 pillow??

I wondered where Marcus was…you know, the guy that bought the Cynthia Rowley china with Stanford for their Hamptons house.
I loved the movie…until the last 10 minutes or so. I was fine with Carrie getting back with Big, but I wish she’d asserted some of her trademark independence by not jumping on the marriage train quite so readily.
Yes, thank you! Where, where WHERE was Marcus? They couldn’t even give us one little line as to where he disappeared to? I know for a fact that there were other scenes with Stanford-including one one the street with Carrie wearing a pink dress-but they must have ended up on the cutting room floor. I could have sworn that in the tv series Stanford & Anthony didn’t like each other. Maybe I need to rewatch my DVDs…
I also thought it was odd that Carrie asked Samantha to be her Maid of Honor. It always seemed like that if the foursome were to break into pairs, it was Carrie/Miranda and Samantha/Charlotte.
And I agree with the person who said that Stanford and Anthony strongly disliked each other on the show. But they seem to be besties now! Did anyone else think that there was maybe something more between them?
I could hear some of the women “ew-ing” when Harry and Charlotte had love scenes, which made me so sad. Harry is such a sweet character, who cares if he isn’t the hottest of the SATC men?
Yeah what was the deal with Stanford and Anthony? They’re supposed to hate each other and what were their reactions to the kiss supposed to be? I assumed they hated it, but then they were next to each other in the final scene.
I think the reason Carrie asked Samantha to be her Maid of Honor was two-fold. 1) She was the only girl out of the four not married or engaged. Carrie probably didn’t want her to feel left out. 2) Carrie knew that Sam was going to be the one most opposed to the engagement and made her Maid of Honor so as to give her a little more of the spotlight–something that would make Samantha a little more accepting of the wedding.
As far as Anthony and Stanny are concerned, with Carrie and Stan and Charlotte and Anthony being friends for as long as they have been, you have to believe that after knowing each other seven years Anthony and Stanford would, at some point, start to actually like each other. But even I couldn’t tell if they were trying to make more out of their relationship.
I love Stanford too, but I can’t criticize a moment of this movie. I loved each and every bit of it. I just feel so lucky to have gotten even a little bit more of my favorite show ever!
One other thing – I have never seen Dreamgirls, but it was hard to believe that Jennifer Hudson is an Oscar winner. I definitely want to see it now to see if there was a big difference between her acting skills in SATC and in Deamgirls. Maybe she’s just more comfortable singing!
I was mad I didn’t get to see Stanford with his boyfriend. They could have at least had him at the shower or at that party him and Anthony was at. Stanford shouldn’t have kissed Anthony after the way Anthony embrassed him with Charlotte tried to hook them up. I missed Marcus. And Sammantha as Carrie’s maid of honor? HUH? All during the show Miranda and Carrie were the closest. Their boyfriends even went into business together. it should have been Miranda. I don’t see the woman who hates to commit being maid of honor. The show and the season finale was better than this movie. And why did Smith Jerrod look so old in this movie and Big look so young?
Standford did need more lines, but he did get a good one. Standford and Anthony don’t like each other, that’s why they took a sip of champagne before they kissed each other. That was hilarious. I really hope they don’t end up together. I loved the writers for not forcing the only two gay regulars together because it’s convenient.
I had a minor problem with Charlotte’s life being so perfect and how she treated her daughter more like a doll than anything else. It seemed like Carrie interacted with her more than Charlotte. Charlotte is my favorite and I really wanted her to have some issues with something! I also didn’t love the central drama. I loved the movie, but the main problem for Carrie was so clichéd. It had a dramatic effect, but I wish they could have figured out something else to temporarily tear them apart—something that wasn’t Big’s fault. Their problem was ridiculous. After all they’ve been through, he never would have done that to her.
I was just wondering if Jennifer Hudson’s role was written that way. Why was she so sista girl?
I don’t think of Stanford as a major character so the time he got on screen was sufficient. Poor Harry got the shaft I think he only had one line in the end at least Steve got a whole storyline.
Remember that four years have passed from the series finale. Can’t you imagine Stanford and Anthony learned to become friends in that time? I was a bit miffed about Marcus AWOL-ness, but whaddya gonna do, right.
I thought J.Hud did just fine – back it up, people.
But one lady I missed was New York. She wasn’t so vibrant in the movie. And where was Carrie’s Carrie necklace? I saw the movie last Tuesday and on Saturday. I only noticed their “place,” a.k.a. the Coffee Shop, the second time. Carrie’s Big announcement to Charlotte and Miranda should’ve taken place there. But I suppose since Samantha wasn’t in town, it would’ve felt wrong to go there to share the news.

I wish they would have explained Stanford and Marcus too? Maybe they broke up? Anthony and Stanford definitely did not like each other in the series. Charlotte tried to set them up at the fashion show where Carrie became “fashion roadkill”. When they didn’t click, they tried to “one up each other” everytime they crossed pathes afterwards. That’s why I loved the kiss so much!
Sweet, the sole purpose of J Hud’s character was to attract a younger, more diverse audience to the film. I think her part was pointless. Why did Carrie need a personal assistant again? We never really saw her writing or working all that much, lol. I’m glad they finally realized they should have some ethnicities in a show that takes places in NEW YORK CITY, but her whole part felt so forced to me.
I love J Hud. I kept waiting her to break out in “And I Am Tellin’ You” Effie style, lol.
I actually thought Carrie asking Samantha to be her MOH made perfect sense to me – 1) Miranda had enough on her plate with her marital drama with Steve; 2) Miranda HATED weddings and all sorts of girlie ceremonial crap (Remember her wedding to Steve? Remember her fussiness about her baby shower?); and 3) I always thought Carrie was more honest with Samantha about her relationship with Big than any of the other girls (she told Samantha about the affair before anyone else, and Sam was non-judgemental); and finally 4) Samantha knows Carrie’s style and taste the best. And Samantha is all about spectacle. For reviewing contracts or pre-nups Miranda’s the go-to gal, but for parties and celebrations, I’d go to either Samantha or Charlotte.
I wish that JHud’s character would have been a more about town single 20 something. I loved the random men storylines from the series—-so now that all the ladies have paired off I thought JHud would get the random hilarious storylines. I think her character was very anti SATC. She moved to the city for love, but once her boyfriend missed her, she left the city to go back home?? LAME!!!
I missed Stanford too. And where was his boyfriend? I much prefer him as Carrie’s sidekick over JHud’s Louise.
I loved the movie. It’s the one movie I have been looking forward to this summer and I think it was awesome. I think in general the writting for the men was lame – that whole turn around and look at me Carrie stuff was nonsense. I don’t think his character would do that in a million years. I also didn’t really get the whole personal assistant thing, but I loved JHud and thought her performance was fine. As for Stanford and Anthony – I think it would have been nice for Stanford to have had more screen time, but let’s be honest, this movie is about the 4 lead women. Maybe if they do a sequel they’ll have more time to show him, but I for one am glad they focused mainly on the relationship between the 4 women.
I loved the movie. I thought J Hud was fine, the problem was the part was superfluous. They should have just had Stanford do the stuff that she was doing. Then we could have gotten the enhanced Stanford we all craved. Smith looked bad — that blow-dried hair has to go. I don’t really think they needed to explain that Stanford and Marcus broke up, and Stanford finally warmed to Anthony. We all figured it out anyway — it is four years after all. I agree they could have cut the fashion show. It just didn’t add anything.
I also didn’t understand why Anthony & Stanford would kiss – but I still thought it was hilarious! And I did miss Marcus. It was the first thing I said to my friend as we were walking down the steps from our seats in the theatre. From my memory at the end of the series, Marcus & Stanford were still together!
Sex and the City, it’s characters and their lack of character are exactly what sucks about modern American women and their obsessions with fashion, and other irrelevant bullshit.
I thought the whole Stanford and Anthony thing exemplified that the story is ultimately about being older (if not necessarily wiser), and handling things differently than in younger years.
For those of you who ever watched “Cheers.” Remember how Sam and Diane bickered and bickered only to wind up sleeping together? I always felt all that bitchiness between Stanford and Anthony on the series would mean at some point they’d wind up together.
I like that they are older, and that these two previously bitchy queens are mellowed out and more adult in the two small scenes they have.
