David Cook on Idol's heinous group numbers and a very cool tour collaboration!

Categories: American Idol, Idolatry

In the last two parts of the American Idol champ’s Idolatry interview, he discusses the "magic rainbow" lyric in his debut single, "The Time of My Life," how he felt about the judges’ unrelentingly tough critiques of fellow contestant Syesha Mercado, and his desire for creative control on his upcoming debut album. Ch-ch-check it out for yourself, and this weekend, come back to PopWatch for our Idolatry chat with the aforementioned Ms. Mercado!

Great interview! Thanks for putting this up. What a down to earth guy! He should title the debut album “Magic Rainbow” just for you, Michael. Now it’s time for the Felidae family of all ages (18+) to wade through all of the obnoxious “Pop Tarts” advertisements and squealing 10 year olds to catch him on tour!

  • meg

definitely going to see it on tour now.

  • Laurie

I was looking forward to seeing them live, but I just went to tickemaster and the only tickets left for our show (that aren’t in the nosebleed section) are in the “auction” with the lowest bid at $125.00 per ticket right now. I refuse to pay $50.00 per ticket and have to sit so high and back from the stage that you can only see them on the big screens. Why fight the crowds to watch them on TV?
With the price of gas I guess I just won’t be seeing them this year…darn!

  • slodwick

Man. Dude just keeps getting more and more endearing with every interview I watch. I definitely think the right man won.

  • cougarcubkaty

Thank you for presenting a mutually respectful, insightful and enjoyable interview. It was very professional journalism within the entertainment genre! And of course DC is the hottest hottie out there, I can’t wait to go to the concert (love having a daughter as an excuse to go!) and buy the album. Thanks again and good luck to DC on the whirlwind of his life in 08 and beyond!!!!

  • paulajoplin

Barracuda with Castro, Cook and Carly? I´m buying those tickets now!!

  • Tara

Great interview. Haha, he hated the group numbers. He’s absolutely lying when he said that he thinks Magic Rainbow is a great song. Of course he has to say that. It’s his first single and he wants it to sell. Go Cookie!!!

  • Tom

Cook won not because of the greatest talent on AI, but because he represents your average american. Not very successful although very intelligent, at 26 years old, a nowhere job, rock bands that failed, CD’s that did not succeed, bad hairdos, no taste in clothes and the unclean look. America voted for their reflective lifestyle rocker. Loud and louder. WOW. This is what we call American idols now? I hope he continues to succeed. After all Taylor Hicks won too.

  • Gingerly

Woohoo, Jason, DC and Carly doing Barracuda. That’s going to so rock. It keeps becoming more apparent that I made the right decision when I bought a ticket to the tour!

  • Tanya

Cook hated the group number, because he is so full of himself and wanted to be the center of attention. After all, he seemed like the rebelious type and always thinks he is above everyone else. During the CNN interviews, he seemed to respond to questions directed to other contestants. He won a reality show for God’s sake. The other contestants have their own talent and I am sure they could speak for themselves. Sounds like a control freak to me. And now we have to hear how more successful he is in selling on Itunes than any other AI contestants. Well, yeah, he is the only one that songs can be downloaded. Like running a race by yourself…dah! Sooner or later you will be the winner. Very clever marketing from AI producers. They pimped him for weeks, before the results, declared Archuleta the winner so that could backfire, and now this. WOW! I hope his ego and Simon Cowell’s are good together, Priceless future for both of these arrogant dudes. Michael Johns you are the one that is HOT!

  • to jessica shaw

would you stop bashing jason castro. he did not have a pained look while performing the group numbers. he has said many times over that he didn’t mind them, thought they were fun, but that he felt awkward. because he’s not a singer and dancer. i never thought jason looked pained while performing those until the last nite he was on cause he probably knew what was coming and after the way the show treated him he probably figured the hell with it. get your facts straight and leave jason alone.

  • to tanya

you are so right about david cook on the larry king interview. he wouldn’t let anybody else talk for more than a second and seemed to think he was the only one who could intelligently answer anything. what an ego. and you’re also right about itunes. i had read a few weeks ago they took jason’s song down because he was out selling the others.

  • DC idol

Wow, what’s up with the haterade? He seems gracious, confident, mature, and respectful- what’s to hate on? I hope he goes far!

  • Darla

I got my tickets for $47.50 and I live in NJ. I definitely would not waste $125.00 to see Cook be the lead of the top 10 talented contestants. I will wait for their own concerts and will then pay $300.00 for each ticket. The loud rock is not my cup of tea. But again, look at Kiss. Thank Good this is America. We all go to concerts we prefer. And I grew up in a rock and roll era. But the ones I liked, I did not have to bring my ear plugs to listen to and they definitely shaved.

  • toyin

Syesha Mercado was so underrated on the show she deserved more from the judges. I pray she will be successful!!

  • idol fan

i can’t tell who is fawning over david more jessica or michael. my God, people do you not play these back and see how ridiculous you both look. when jessica and the other girl interviewed michael johns it was a joke about how hot he is. but in this interview it looks like she really thinks david would like her. the brady bunch and “you’re greg.”ugh and maybe david didn’t look pained in the group numbers is because he had the smoldering look thru out everything he sang. love how they said jason looked pained then showed a clip of him smiling and having a good time. doesn’t anybody edit these clips,

  • Syesha

i’m with you toyin, Syesha definitively was the best vocally, David Cook said on Larry king that “if American idol was a singing competition, he will be sitting mile away from Syesha” and David Arch also agreed, when he hears the most cool version of a song from Syesha and the judges are; like it’s JUST ok!!.
    Syesha rocks!!!

  • MrKitty

What a great interview(s) – his is one bight young man…and would venture to say that he probably is the brightest Idol yet…got a good head on his shoulders.

  • Eric

Cook is talented yes for the rock fanatics who can relate to his personality, style and music. Hey Amy Winehouse won Grammy awards too. YUK! It will be very interesting to see how his outspoken egomaniac attitude will work with the new contracts. I could not help but think, this guy should lose so he like Daughtry can flourish with his independence and style. But AI lost big $$$ with Daughtry’s success, so they made sure now to add a rocker to their list and market him very well so that they can make more money. AI now owns Cook. He is their “rock slave”. Interestingly enough Cook said that himself the other day during an interview in NY (oops, a little slip of the tongue Cookie??) So enjoy all that is coming your way Cookie, and hope your success is not forgetable. Rockers come and go. There are new rock artists on the list of rockers every week. He is very independent. I hope the new contract works for him. Labels drop artists all the time.

  • jojo

I am so glad David Cook won! He is my favorite of all the seasons. Loved this interview, but wish it was about an hour longer!! I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this man and his art.

  • to Eric

You’re wrong about Daughtry. The folks at 19 exercised their option to sign him, and therefore they are making a boatload of money off all his successes. 19 has the option to sign anyone from the top 12 that they choose for any season.

  • Ada

Of course he is bright. He is 26 years old, went to college, did not have a real job, does crossword puzzles, comes across as the only one who has any intelligence out of all the contestants, had to write his messages on his hands to make sure we got it, changes other people’s songs and he thinks he is original and of course at the end, he even said, I did not try to compete for AI, i just got thrown into it by someone who thought I was more talented than my brother. EEEEEEEEK. Thank God he won. So his fans will not get too violent with the other contestants. Look at the type of fans he attracts. The women think he is George Clooney (YUK), the men, feel matcho next to his unshaved egotistical look, the unemployed with no direction in life think he is terrific, and oh yes, he can speak for others at interviews. Here is YOUR AMERICAN IDOL America. WOW!I hope you can afford to buy his CD at full price. :)

  • Slezak Fan

There is no question that Slezak and his colleagues are very gifted and talented journalists. I watched all of the idolatry segments from this season and usually found them to be clever and insightful. I must admit, however, that I sometimes found the commentary to be inconsistent, gratuitously provocative and, on occasion, unnecessarily mean-spirited. Perhaps Slezak’s passion for the show is both his greatest strength and weakness. On the positive side, being such a long-time and committed fan of American Idol enabled him to conduct extraordinary interviews with the finalists this week. Conversely, it was apparent that, like most rank-and-file fans this season, Slezak became very invested in certain contestants and his loyalty and predisposition for certain contestants and musical styles too often contaminated his objectivity during the course of the show. Slezak has been very critical of the judges for showing favoritism this season. How ironic?

Great interview with my favorite Idol in 7 seasons. I wish him much success in putting out the album he wants to make, and I think he’ll get the creative control he craves (obviously people like him since his sales were nearly double of everyone else combined – and yes, everyone’s songs from all season were available last week). I love the confidence he has in his talents, and his admission that he realizes that he has a lot to learn about he music business. He seems like a very cool, intelligent, and balanced person who is very appreciative of where he is and how he got here.
The hatred of his facial hair and clothes is really amusing. Are people really that shallow? What exactly is a 25 year old rock singer supposed to wear? The “loud rocker” comments are really amusing. He’s not exactly Jack White. He’s a pop-rocker and he readily admits to it.

  • Donna

Slezak and his other weirdo half, look like their underwear is too tight, or was that all the excitement in their pants from Cook’s presence? You know the new God’s gift to women and America. Oh lord helps us. Before you know it, we will be declaring him as the new saint. Keep smiling Cook. I hope next year we remember who you are. I still look at the audition tapes and think oh my god look at the freaky look with a nice voice. This is what is seeked out as talent now? WOW.

  • Wissphoto

What a bunch of crap some of you who are bashing Cook. I don’t care if you don’t like his music, but please don’t attack him personally. He is one of the nicest and sincere idols they have ever had. He sticks up for all the idols. He has defended Jason on LKL, Seyesha on Idolatry, and Carly. He has said over and over who he enjoys sharing the stage with Archie and he expected to be number 2. Yes, he intelligent and confident, it does not make him smug. He is the idol who is the most comfortable in front of a camera, so yes he does more of the talking. He is the winner, so more attention will be paid to him. He is the only one I know that wears multiple bracelets for different causes. I never see him brag in interviews, just a lot of thanking his fans, and praise for the talents of the other 23 people that started with him in Hollywood.

  • Kyle

OK Wissphoto, don’t worry he won’t date you. He dates clean cut gorgeous women. Who after one date, will probalby not want to go out with him again, since they will be followed constantly by the TMZ stalkers. Oh he is just so nice. So why don’t you marry him or go to his concerts. Bring your ear plugs. Anybody he interrupts people when they ask the other contestants questions is RUDE. So he can sing. So what? You want to do something useful stop stalking this rock dude and volunteer your time and money to a worthy cause. His is only a singer, not superman. Superfreaky yes. :)

  • coco

sooooo much hate for a Friday evening. What is up with you fellow bloggers!
Ok, so Cookie didnt hava corporate job or used to wear suits every day, he was an artist trying to make it and at least he went to college and bartender to make some money. I know Engineers that are bartenders too to pay for student loans. Don’t be so shallow. His style improve every week and at the end of the day what counts is the brains and it seems to me that he is a very smart guy.
BTW, I have a graduate degree and I can definitively afford buying his tickets and going to concerts. So stop with the white trash comments. Also, leave Slezak and Jessica alone, they did a great job with Idolatry and as I always say,if you don’t like, get out of this blog! Happy weekend!

  • Gwen

David Cook is 25 years old, just in case anyone wants to keep posting it.
